The List Volume XXIX

By |November 26th, 2010|The List|

I’ve been bombarded with commercials, tweets, and status updates about “Black Friday” shopping.  Not to sound like a snob, but I am not, nor have I ever, participated in what I consider such a barbaric event.  I don’t care how large a flat screen I can get or how many cashmere sweaters I can snag if it means that I will be forced to wait in the freezing cold with a bunch of cattle and then be pushed around, trampled, and most likely verbally assaulted once inside. No, thank you. Not worth it. That said, here are ten things I’d rather do than go shopping on Black Friday:

  1. Go ice fishing with my bare hands.
  2. Clean the bathroom with poisonous products and a fresh manicure.
  3. Long division with no calculator.
  4. Drink vinegar through a pink straw.
  5. Watch the Kanye West Runaway “movie” on repeat.
  6. Go sit in an office all day with a bunch of twatards who don’t know what they’re talking about.
  7. Go rock climbing with no harness on Mt. Everest.
  8. Walk home uphill both ways in the snow with no shoes while carrying a bale of hay.
  9. Have a root canal performed by my dog with no anesthesia.
  10. Wear leggings as pants.

Enjoy those sales!

WhyDid Wisdom: Too Much Stuff Makes Me Sad

By |November 25th, 2010|WhyDid Wisdom|

As I mentioned before, when I came to LA in July, I only came with a carry on. Enough for a long weekend. I mean, fortunately for me, I tend to over pack… so my “weekend” is probably a normal person’s seven day vacation. Regardless of such, I had about 1/64th of the contents of my closet with me. So how did I manage with a smattering of my wardrobe for nearly four months? Surprisingly, just fine.

Having only a few different combinations for each outfit made my life more simple. Granted, I may have picked up a few items here and there, but nothing crazy. Just a little somethin’ somethin’ to add a little bit of variety.

Eventually, one of my best friends came to visit and brought me a suitcase full of my clothing with another box of my clothes following close on her heels. I thought I would be totally elated to have some more of my very favorite articles of clothing, but when it all arrived, I felt melancholy rather than manic.

I can’t logically explain the feeling that I got when I was hanging up my clothes in our closet, but it was a very blue feeling. It was almost like having too much stuff made me sad. How could this be? Everyone knows the person with the most stuff wins, right? Um, no.  I prided myself on having more clothes than one girl could ever wear, but having been without for a while, I had learned what was truly important to me. I realized that sometimes (more often than not) less is more. This goes not only for clothes, but also for money, friends, and material things. Focus more on what matters and less on what doesn’t.  The things that can’t be sold on eBay are more important than those that can.

Beauty Buzz: Tame the Beast

By |November 25th, 2010|Beauty Buzz|

So, you may be aware that I have a ton of hair (on my head). While most of the time it seems to be under control… that doesn’t happen without a little bit of struggle. My hair is naturally wavy/curly.  I am not lucky enough to be able to just flip my head upside and blow it straight with a few strokes of the old hair brush. Getting my coif sleek and straight is a bit of  workout.

Last week, while popping in to say “hello” to my new friends at Neihule Salon, I asked for a recommendation of a great straightening product for blowing my hair straight. The lovely Megan walked me right over to the Loreal Texture Expert Fluid Intense Straightening Serum. She informed me that this was what all the stylists at the salon were using for blowouts and that this product was especially good for the long term health of my hair. Seeing as I could have played the lead in Tangled, I was happy to know this would protect and maintain my long locks. I went ahead and purchased the product and headed home to test it out.

Loreal Texture Expert Fluid Intense Straightening Serum, $24

After shampooing and conditioning, I applied the serum and was happy to see my hair already starting to behave after brushing it through. I blew my hair dry as usual and noticed that I only had to spend half as much time straightening any rogue waves or frizz with the flat iron (also a bonus for the health of my strands). Needless to say, I was very happy with my silky, slinky straight hair when finished. It also helped keep my  hair straight for a couple of days after, which always makes me very happy.

Would You Wednesday: Fresh Ink

By |November 24th, 2010|Why Did or Why Don't?|

Lots of beautiful young startlets and young ladies I know have covered their pretty and perfect skin with tattoos. Whether it be the good ol fashion tramp stamp or something discreet on their back, wrist, or rib cage, they’ve all branded themselves with something. Some are gentle reminders to themselves, others have a deeper meaning, and some are just “cute.”

This is not me knocking the tattoo trend because I have my very own little bit of ink.  I got it a couple of years ago and it’s teeny tiny. So tiny that, in fact, I startle myself sometimes when I see it because I’ve forgotten that it’s there. It’s not something that I totally regret, but now I’m kind of over it and have definitely considered getting it removed.

So, I’m kind of just wondering if others out there are debating the same thing. Or maybe some of you out there are debating your first tattoo.  Maybe you can’t decide what you want to go or maybe you aren’t sure if you really want one.

Do you think this is just a trend that we will all regret or is it something that is worth having for a lifetime? My only advice? Don’t get any boy’s name emblazoned on your body! Tattoos last and unfortunately, sometimes boyfriends don’t.

So, what do you think about ink?

Why Did You Wear That: You Com-Pleat Me

By |November 23rd, 2010|Celebrity Style, Personal Style, Why Did You Wear That?|

I can’t lie, the lovely Ms. Fox inspired this post. I have had a pair of slouchy pleated pants hanging in my closet for a few months now and every time I put them on, I felt a bit more Ellen Degeneres than Megan Fox. After seeing how hot a pair of simple slacks could look, I was inspired to try again.  A slouchy pleated pant is a great alternative to jeans, leggings, and your regular dress/work slacks. Here are some great pleated options for you to try out as well:

Stella McCartney Pleated Cropped Pants, $595

Bird by Juicy Couture Carrot Silhouette Trousers, $328

Myne Tamara Pants, $210

Something Else by Natalie Wood Slouchy Pleat Front Pants, $117

American Apparel Linen High Waist Pleated Pants, $75

Silence and Noise Pleated Ankle Roll Pant, $58

Charlotte Russe Cropped Pleated Slouchy Pants, $29.50
