Red Carpet Recap: Grammy’s One on One

Last night marked the 57th Annual Grammy Awards. Everyone was there from Beyonce to Mary J. Blige. Even Prince showed up clad in head to toe sequins to present an award along with delivering probably the most profound message of the evening, “Albums, like books and black lives, still matter.” Taylor Swift and Kanye may have buried the hatchet, but Mr. West nearly disrupted Beck’s speech while accepting the award for Album of the Year. He thought it belonged to Beyonce and clearly we just need to give him a seat on every voting panel to avoid further broadcast disruptions. In any case, I’m not sure who even hosted last night’s awards, but I wasn’t really tuned into the show post red carpet arrivals. I had pegged Ms. Swift as my favorite for the night- that is, until Wiz Khalifa’s son, Sebastian showed up. Two of my favorites who I never thought I’d be calling elegant, were Miley Cyrus and Nicki Minaj. Both tamed their usually outlandish looks for sleeker, more sophisticated styles. As for the rest of the arrivals? I’ll let you be the judge as I kept having the strange sensation of deja vu.

Why Did You Wear That: The Way to Go Grey

It now gets dark before five o’clock and I’m beginning to come to terms with the fact that winter is on its way and there’s nothing I can do to change that. But until the snow congregates on the concrete, I will continue to cling to the last bits of light and the fleeting moments of warmth. There is a period of time about as long as fall lasts in New York when you can wear tall boots with a slice of skin still showing. After this, you’ll be relegated to warmer legwear or… shudder… pants. There are, however, perks to cooler weather (there’s always a silver lining, after all) and those perks come in the form of leather shorts, over the knee boots, beanies, and cozy sweaters. This Daisy Fuentes for Kohl’s dolman sweater is the perfect way to wear a pair of leather shorts without looking like a fly girl. The key to sproting over the knee boots without eliciting Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman, vibes is to dress them down with a casual sweater and knit beanie. Both leather shorts and OTK boots are items that could go terribly wrong, so wear with caution. This sweater, however, can do no wrong because once the leg baring weather has come to an end, it’s just the right length to be legally worn with leggings.

Setting the Mood: Nesting Season

On November 1st, the official hangover of Halloween, I peered out my window to see that the weather was just as miserable as my headache. Grey skies, drizzling rain, cold, gusty wind, and an adorable dog who needed to empty his bladder standing on my chest and blinking down at me with his big brown eyes. You haven’t experienced selfless love until you’ve had to take your dog for a walk on a cold Saturday morning. I warned him that he was going to be sorely disappointed when his paws were wet upon hitting the pavement, but he insisted. Afterall, he’s a dog and though it’s debatable, he doesn’t speak English. Having nearly been blown away by the blustery wind and cursing my flimsy umbrella, we made it safely back inside where I decided to stay… for the rest of the weekend.

Though some tempting offers were thrown out, none were alluring enough to coax me from my cozy apartment. That’s when it hit me. Nesting season has begun and the brief magic of fall has come crashing down as fast as the fallen leaves. Plans will begin to dwindle until we all become hibernating animals slumbering until spring, so you may as well feather your nest and get comfortable.

Why Did You Wear That: C’est La Vie (Active)

I can’t deny that I have a hard time stomaching dropping hundreds of dollars on pricey activewear, especially when it seems as of late, my entire clothing budget has gone basically to sports bras, compression pants, and sneakers. You should smell my hamper. However, fitness has become such a thing (um, been on Instagram lately?) that department stores such as Saks and online retailers like Net-A-Porter have dedicated entire categories to designer activewear. Long gone are the days of just tossing on your boyfriend’s boxers and a ratty t-shirt to rally at the gym. When I look around my Pilates class, it’s a full fledged fashion show with one toned body looked more chic than the next. Fitness is having a serious fashion moment.

There is little else that’s worse than catching a glimpse of yourself in the mirror behind you mid burpee to see that your pants are startlingly sheer (recall lululemon-gate?). There have been times when I could have told half the women in my classes what color their knickers were because they shone through during downward facing fanny. Really, the only thing I can think of that’s worse is finding out how many calories I’ve consumed in a day. Along with tracking my runs with Runkeeper, I downloaded a little iPhone app called My Fitness Pal. Spoiler alert, ladies: there are a lot of calories in wine.

So, perhaps there is something to spending a little extra when it comes to your workout wear.
