Beauty Buzz: The Root of the Problem

By |January 6th, 2011|Beauty Buzz|

So I’ve been sporting unintentional ombre hair.  It is “unintentional” because I haven’t had my hair highlighted since June (that’s 7 months, folks) my beloved hairdresser returned to her hometown in eastern Europe and I’m a lunatic when it comes to letting just anyone touch my beloved locks.  So, until I find someone who can properly  handle my strands of gold, I will allow my natural hue to emerge from my scalp.

While at times I want to punch my own reflection in the mirror, there are a few upsides.  One being that I’m allowing my hair a little bit of recovery time.  It isn’t easy being highlighted and flat ironed and tugged and pulled.  The other being that I’m apparently not alone in this hairy situation.  Celebrities from Whitney Port to Alexa Chung and Jessica Biel have been showing off a little root.

The first person I ever recall sporting roots and making it look cool was Sarah Jessica Parker back in the Sex and the City days.  I remember thinking, “She is so cool She can even make hair growth look good!” So what is ombre and how is it created?  Basically the top of the hair is left darker or in some cases dyed a bit darker while leaving the lower (middle to bottom) hair a few shades lighter.  It is supposed to be a subtle transitional look as to not channel “trailer park blonde.”

I actually really like the style on several celebs when it is done correctly. When the color is drastically different, I think it has a tendency to come off as more of a mistake than a choice.  Ombre hair looks best on brunettes and blondes who have naturally light hair.  Otherwise you may look like this:

Rather than looking like this:

Oh… I just realized another upside to ombre hair… I’m saving money!  While some may have to pay up to get the look, mine is as free as can be.  So what do you think? Would you rock the ombre hair trend?

rooting for you…

Would You Wednesday: When I Think About You…

By |January 5th, 2011|Why Did or Why Don't?|

Taylor Momsen was criticized not so long about when she made remarks about young girls needing to “learn yourself first.”  She also let it be known that she is an advocate for female masturbation and considers her vibrator her best friend. While, her comments were a bit shocking coming from a seventeen year old, I think she may very well be on to something.

For so long, girls have been taught that sex and especially masturbation are “bad.”  Both have almost been made to feel shameful for young ladies.  Meanwhile, boys go through the whole Vaseline by the nightstand phase without a bit of guilt.  Girls need to learn what feels good.  So many are under the impression that sex and submission is to impress boys and never really learn what and where all their pieces and parts do and are. Maybe if girls realized they could make themselves feel good, they wouldn’t give it up so easily.  Perhaps then we wouldn’t be bombarded with shows like Sixteen and Pregnant and Teen Moms.

Not convinced  yet? Even Oprah hosted a show about this very topic. During the show, her guest, Dr. Berman, agreed that young girls should learn about orgasms and self pleasure in order to take control over their own sexuality and in the process avoid unhealthy sexual experiences, get more information at supremasi.top.  Some of you may be blushing as you read this, but with only 30% of women regularly having orgasms from sex, seems to me like we all could use a little education and perhaps a little help from our battery operated friends.

What do you think?

Why Did You Eat That: Musical Chairs

By |January 3rd, 2011|New York, Why Did You Eat That?|

Once upon a time, I was gallivanting through the West Village when I stumbled upon a big wooden door.  Being the ever curious girl that I am, I went ahead and entered said wooden door to see what kind of magic it held inside.  Magic was right. I entered a room that looked like it didn’t even belong in New York City.  It was old and quaint and had twinkling chandeliers dangling from its soaring ceilings.

I still didn’t know where I was until I asked the bartender. He informed me that I was at One If By Land Two If By Sea. I had heard of it, but had never gone.  It was supposed to be one of the most romantic restaurants in the city and now I could see why. I bid the bartender adieu and vowed that some day I would return to this magical place with my very own Prince Charming.

Flash forward seven months, and I returned to One If By Land Two If By Sea this past weekend for their Sunday Jazz Brunch.  I couldn’t imagine anything more “old” New York than listening to jazz over bellinis in such a beautiful place.  They have several delightful options on their brunch menu (served from 11:30am-2:00pm). I ordered the brioche French toast (with carmelized bananas, toasted pistachios, and creme anglaise) and my handsome companion ordered the leek and bacon quiche.  Both were delightful in two very different ways.  While his was hearty and savory, mine was like eating dessert for breakfast.  I must say that the combination of delicious food, great music, and overall ambience was exactly the way a Sunday should be spent.

One If By Land Two If By Sea

17 Barrow Street

New York, NY 10014

How does a curious girl get dressed for a magical brunch with her very own Prince Charming?  For a place like this, I would suggest elegantly casual with a touch of feminine romance.

Billabong October Beanie, $22

Madison Marcus Long Sleeve Lace Blouse, $238

J Brand 901 Low-Rise Skinny Velvet Jeans, $185

Black Rooster Vienne Bootie, $125

Juicy Couture Alice Plaid Coat, $448

Happily ever after…

Why Did You Date Him?: Attached at the Hip

By |December 31st, 2010|Why Did You Date Him?|

Recently, I’ve seen a lot of shows including “man caves”, girls’ nights out, and fellas griping about the old “ball and chain.”  (This may or may not have something to do with the continuous loop of HGTV shows we’ve been watching). I’m a bit put off by all three of the former terms.  First and foremost, I need to understand a man cave. What is it that goes on inside of said “man cave” that must happen within those confines?  Why can’t these goings on take place in, say, the living room?

Also, I enjoy a cocktail with the girls as much as the next woman, but I never feel like I’m going to explode if I don’t get away from my man and have a cosmo in my hand in the next five minutes.  I don’t need to spend the next three drunken hours discussing the very same men that we were itching so hard to get away from. I can’t imagine dating, let alone being married to someone who I didn’t genuinely enjoy being around.

My man friend and I are starting to become the real life  Alex and Simon from The Housewives of New York City, except about 450,000 times less creepy and I’m 157% certain my love is not playing for the other team.  Since we started dating, we haven’t ever slept a night apart. Basically, I came to visit him and just never bothered to leave. Some may think that is strange, but there is quite honestly no one else I’d rather spend my time with (except for Smitty).  Being around him is like being with myself.  A good friend of mine once told me that when you are with the “right” person, it’s like being all by yourself.  No, she didn’t mean you are sitting there talking to a brick wall.  What she meant was that there are no airs. There are no expectations.  You are being fully and completely yourself. There’s no show and you don’t have to be on your best behavior until the credits roll.

Granted, he does go to work Monday through Friday, so we are apart (albeit we talk on iChat all day…). I just want to be around him because we are always having fun and it’s always easy.  Now, let’s go ahead and take a step back.  There is something to be wary of here.  Wanting to be with someone for the former reason is a great thing in my book.  However, if you have ulterior motives for wanting to be with someone or if the feelings are not mutual, you may be in for some trouble.

With an ex, the reason I wanted to be by his side at all times was because I knew the moment I was out of sight, he would be trying to bag the next pretty young thing who walked through the door.  I was constantly on edge and I knew in my heart of hearts that when he was on “business trips” or boys’ trips (that’s a WHOLE other topic, mind you), it was fairly (read: very) likely that I was not the last voice he’d be hearing before bed. My reasons for wanting all of his time and attention were not out of genuine love and desire.  They were out of fear. Now that’s just not healthy. Whether or not my feelings were validated, I was miserable and that’s no way to live.

Though you may want to spend every waking moment and very last breath with your boo, be sure to make certain that these feelings are shared.  It should be pretty obvious if they are.  You won’t have to ask or beg or fight or trick or threaten about it. It will just “be.”

So if your man is acting more like a neanderthal down in his “special place” and you’re out with the girls drinking to forget that he’s ignoring you in his cave, then maybe its time to reevaluate and perhaps roll a boulder in front of the opening to his man cave. Just a thought.
