The List Volume LVI

By |October 14th, 2011|Somethin for the fellas, The List|

There’s quite a bit of time spent on WhyDid helping the ladies with the do’s and don’ts of fashion… but it occurred to me last night (while watching an especially offensive episode of The Millionaire Matchmaker) that we need to direct some of this professional fashion help towards our male counterparts.  It also occurred to me that many of you men actually think you have  the slightest clue as to how to dress yourselves.  Welp, newsflash: You don’t.  Just ask Kanye, who took the liberty of deciding he could show his “collection” at Paris Fashion Week.  Oops!

So, this is dedicated to you, brothers Cruz and the rest of you gentlemen out there making our eyes hurt.  (I’ll include photos as to be very explicit).

  1. Manpris.  Yes, those are exactly what you’re thinking.
  2. Sleeveless hoodies.
  3. Anything with embellishment.  Good rule of thumb: If you’ve seen it on The Jersey Shore, it for sure shouldn’t see it in your closet.
  4. Fishnet tank tops. Ahem, Jared Leto.
  5. If you must wear a blazer with your jeans (and it seems you all must), please, for heaven’s sake, do not wear sky blue baggy jeans with it.  Dark and tailored denim, fellas.
  6. Button down shirts… only buttoned with one button.  There are multiple buttons for multiple reasons.  Use them.
  7. Knit hats and/or scarves at the beach or with a tank top, swim trunks, or anything else that could be worn in July.
  8. Jewelry other than a wedding band.
  9. T-shirts that could be mistaken for your girlfriend’s in the wash. Tight, deep V, etc. ….  Please reference SNL’s Dangerously Deep V –
  10. Skinny jeans.  I’m so uncomfortable with these for so many reasons.  One being that I don’t need to know that your thighs are smaller than mine.

Friday Frocks: It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere

By |October 14th, 2011|Friday Frocks, Why Did You Wear That?|

Quite frequently (especially during this time of year) we receive invites for cocktail parties or invitations with a dress code stating “cocktail attire,” but what does that really mean?  We’ve come to know that slipping into a slinky LBD (little black dress) is the way to go, but shall we take a little trip back in time?  Well, you have no choice… cause we’re gonna.

Cocktail parties first gained popularity in the 1920’s during prohibition (aka when alcohol was illegal).  So, since the sale and consumption of alcohol in public would land you behind bars (no pun intended), cocktail parties popped up as private social gatherings.  And just like us modern girls, the ladies of the 20’s realized that they needed a little something special to wear to these functions.  Alas, cocktail attire was born!  The first cocktail dresses were waistless, knee length, and reminiscent of the flapper (cause a lot of them were flappers).  And these ladies knew how to accessorize!  Small embellished bags, gloves, and hats were all a part of the attire.  Shoes were slipper like and often dyed to match the dresses.

By the 1950’s, cocktail hour was part of the culture and while the tradition continued, groups opted to go out rather than stay in, which is more in line with what we consider our modern day cocktail hour or “happy hour.”  This week, let’s check out some frocks that would have made even the tartiest flapper smile.

1. Oscar de la Renta Feather Trimmed Silk Mesh Dress, $5,390, 2.  Red Valentino Bow Dress, $611, 3. Kova & T Windsor Cocktail Dress, $429, 4. French Connection Winter Bex Beads Dress, $328, 5. Juicy Couture Guipure Lace Dress, $328, 6. Vanessa Bruno Athe Dress, $360, 7. Top Shop Scallop Embellished Drop Waist Dress, $330, 8. Top Shop Lace Panel Pleated Tunic, $76, 9. Accidentally in Love Crinkle Popover Dress, $54, 10. Tibi Rococo Print Silk Twill Cap Sleeve Dress, $462

It’s five o’clock somewhere, right?

Would You Wednesday: Peplum Squad

By |October 12th, 2011|Why Did or Why Don't?, Why Did You Wear That?|

pep·lum(pplm) 1. A short overskirt or ruffle attached at the waistline of a jacket, blouse, or dress.

Okay, so in case you’ve been asleep in your matzo ball soup, you probably noticed a trend with some incredibly chic celebrities.  These lovely ladies have been sporting a little something that probably made you think, “Hm… I’ve seen that before.  But where?”  Well, I’ll tell ya where:

In case you were born after 1989, those are The Jetsons.  They are what we were supposed to be right now.  Anyway, the peplum actually gained popularity back in the 19th century.  And lo and behold, what’s old is new again (fashion is cyclical if you haven’t caught on just yet).  So what do you think about this stylistic accoutrement?

Jetson, you’re fired!

Smart is the New Pretty: E.T. Phone Home

By |October 12th, 2011|Smart Is the New Pretty|

Oh, our cellphones… They sure have come a long way.  When’s the last time you left home without it?  We basically live our lives on our phones.  Whether we’re emailing, texting, Tweeting, or making an actual phone call, we can’t live without them.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got to take this call.

Why Did You Wear That: Go-To Getup

By |October 11th, 2011|Personal Style, Why Did You Wear That?|

Do you have one of those outfits that you always gravitate to when you’re in a rush and need to look nice?  Well, this is one of mine.  As a matter of fact, when plans for shooting the original outfit fell through (thanks a lot temperamental weather), I decided, instead, to shoot this one.  I love it because it’s so easy… not to mention comfortable.  Let’s be serious, I’m essentially wearing a nightshirt.  Not my grandpa’s nightshirt, but close enough.  I also realize now that I’m taking a moment to look at it that it has a slight scallywag feel to it, but as mentioned- I love seamen.

A long loose feminine blouse, soft velvet leggings, and boots with a bow make for an easy, yet pulled together look.  I obviously wouldn’t wear velvet leggings in say, July, but for fall, they are one of my favorites.  And because I wouldn’t feel right if I didn’t say it, “Leggings are not pants.”

1. Malene Birger Jace Ruffled Georgette Blouse, $325, 2. Top Shop Velvet Leggings, $45, 3. Z Spoke by Zac Posen Mini Crossbody, $295, 4. DKNYC Wynette Bootie, $179

Get to it.
