Would You Wednesday: Scissor Sisters

Today I did something that I really dread doing. No, I didn’t go to the dentist. Not the gyno either. I went to get a haircut. Ever since I moved to Los Angeles and my old hairdresser moved out of the states, I have not done a thing to my hair. No color, no cutting, no nothing. I have a hard time trusting just anyone with the care of my hair. Finally, I gave in as I stared at my straggly strands. It was high time to care of the straw I was calling “hair.” I headed over to Neihule Salon, crossed my fingers, and hoped for the best.

Luckily, I was in good hands. The woman in charge of the fate of my locks was Whitney Thomas. I told her all about my follicle fears and she understood. She showed me how much she was going to cut and made sure I was okay with it. A wash, snip, and blow dry later, I left with shiny, bouncy, freshly trimmed hair.

I did my due diligence by coming home and inspecting every square inch of my head to make sure I loved it. I did. (So, if you’re scissor shy just like me, I’d head on over and give Whitney a visit). I felt even better about my new ‘do when I saw these photos of Brooklyn Decker:

WTF?! What made Brooklyn do such a thing to her hair? Did she think looking like Meg Ryan would help her movie career in the Rom-Com arena? Perhaps she thought that this was the hairdo of marital bliss. (I did see a few moms in my pilates class with the same style). She spent an awful lot of time on set with Jennifer Anniston, so it’s also possible that she figured creating her own “Rachel” would land her a recurring role on a sitcom. Welp, at least her dress was cute.

BTW- she’s TWENTY THREE! So… did BK get a little scissor happy?

Why Did You Wear That: Hot Pants

Another trend from the oh so styling 70’s are the infamous hotpants. While the originals are hardly suitable for public viewing, I’ve interpreted them into my own fashion. I love denim, but how many different washes and cuts can you have before growing bored? By adding some color to your denim game you can really switch things up. Now your bottom isn’t the “neutral” and you’ve added an instant pop to any outfit.

Add a floral patterned top or a sheer neutral blouse to your “hot pants” to balance the bold. A pair of strappy neutral or metallic high heeled (platform) sandals will finish off your look and have you doing the hustle in no time.

Why Did You Wear That: Candy Coated Rain Drops

I get that everyone is itching for spring to show up. And fast. However, it seems that some of you have forgotten that little grade school ditty, “April showers bring May flowers.” Ah, yes, we have an entire month more of moody weather before the clouds part and the birds chirp. Seeing as I spent the last 5 years in New York City, I know a thing or two about navigating Mother Nature’s temperamental tendencies. Having a few simple things in your arsenal can help take a rainy day from miserable to manageable.

Rain repellent coat: It’s tricky to find a coat that is 1. warm, 2. cute, 3. water resistant, but I think I’ve found the answer here, Burberry Zip Front Field Jacket with Detachable Hood, $695

Rainboots: I’ve mentioned before that I worked in offices full of girls in wellies. However, at times, the rain is only here for a short while. Why Did You Wear That: The Real King of the Jungle

Tigers, leopards, cheetahs. They get all the credit. Season after season, animal print, namely leopard, remains en vogue. Well, what about the quiet king of the jungle? The giraffe? With pleasantly patterned pelts, and lashes you could only wish for, the lanky giraffe has been long overlooked. It is the supermodel of the safari, afterall.

It’s true, I’m biased. My very favorite animals (other than Smitty) are giraffes. My fiance thought I was mocking him when we first started hanging out (guess he didn’t read number two) until my parents verified that I, too, was mad for giraffes. Match made in heaven.

Giraffes have 18 inch purply-black tongues.

Friday Frocks: I’d Like to Thank the Academy

For Hollywood’s leading ladies, the Academy Awards are the Super Bowl of fashion. While they’ve been trying out different looks during the Emmy’s and the Golden Globes and even the Grammy’s, tonight is their big night. It’s do or die time. Something I’ve noticed is that these stunning starlets have been able to snag looks literally right off the runways. So, I did some hunting and gathering from Fall 2011’s runways to find some fabulous frocks that I would love to see make their way down the red carpet this weekend.

Everyone knows that it’s hard to go wrong in black. However, black can sometimes be seen as dull and predictable. These gorgeous frocks are anything but boring with embellishments, lace, and layers of tulle.

I love color on the red carpet. While we’ve seen quite a bit of red and pink, I would love to see more blue and even more of the green that was such a big trend at the Golden Globes. These dresses actually reminded me of peacock feathers and were a different take on patterns and texture. I could see some of the more daring ladies slipping into some of these glorious gowns.

One trend that doesn’t seem to be going anywhere anytime soon (which makes me very happy) is the metallic trend. Whether it’s a shiny silver or a cool copper, there are sure to be several beauties wearing frocks with shimmer.

While I may or may not be dead on with these red carpet predictions, at least they’re something pretty to look at during your Friday afternoon homestretch to the weekend.
