Setting the Mood: Hut, Set, Who Cares…

By |January 28th, 2013|Setting the Mood|

what to wear to the superbowlWhether you like it or not, the Super Bowl cometh.  I’m on team “Or not.”  Doesn’t matter which team you’re rooting for… hold on… had to ask who’s playing… be it San Francisco or Baltimore, you will have to come to terms with the fact that 90+% of the American male population will be glued to the TV come Sunday and you can either book that weekend away with the girls, or get on board with the boys.  I’m on hold with the Four Seasons as we speak, but should you find yourself stuck at a pigskin party, you may as well get in the spirit of the game.  That would require one to dress the part.  Don’t bother wasting your time with heels, but please, heaven almighty, don’t be that girl wearing a football jersey.  Another option that gives the illusion you care?  Wear a cute and cozy top in your team’s color(s).  Should you despise both teams, just wear black or a color that has absolutely nothing to do with the game… like pink.  Distressed denim, designer sneaks, and a whistle accessory just for fun will complete your game day getup.

Why Did You Wear That: Bottoms Up!

By |January 9th, 2013|Personal Style, Why Did You Wear That?|

kirsten smith whydid comI bought a pair of questionably patterned pants about a month ago, which Serena apparently wore on an episode of Gossip Girl.  This is basically the closest I’ll ever get to looking like Blake Lively.  These were a post holiday sale impulse purchase and while it took me a while to actually wear them (in public), I do kind of love them.  Something I try to do during the colder winter months is stock up on pants of interest.  I realize this is the opposite of what most stylists might suggest, but I love the idea of bringing drama to an outfit from the bottom  up.  Rather than slipping on a sparkly top, I slide into patterned pants, velvet leggings, or leather embellished trousers and “top” them off with a simple tee or neutral blouse and leave the rest up to accessories.  If you’re looking to switch things up, I suggest starting from the bottom up.

Why Did You Wear That: Did I Do That?

By |October 9th, 2012|Why Did You Wear That?|

steve urkelYou know you’re getting old when you start saying things like, “They don’t make ’em like they used to.”  Well, from time to time I wax poetic about “classic” TV and some of the shows I grew up with.  Yes, I love The Nanny, Full House, and Who’s the Boss?, but let us not forget the great Family Matters starring the obnoxiously lovable, Steve Urkel.  Sure, sure he spent the majority of his time chasing around Laura Winslow and in hot pursuit of cheese, but perhaps we sold this geek a bit short.  No, I don’t mean his alter ego, Stefan.  I’m talking about his studious style that could very well be translated into something quite cool for modern day.

1. Cutler and Gross D-Frame Acetate Optical Glasses, $470, 2. J. Crew Holden Plaid Cotton Blend Shirt, $78, 3. Steven Banx Two Tone Oxfords, $129, 4. Forever 21 Hooded Varsity Cardigan, $22.80, 5. Forever 21 Suspenders, $8.90, 6. Rag & Bone Dash Slouchy Skinny Jeans, $198,

See? suddenly Steve is looking a little less geek and a bit more chic.  And if I told you I hadn’t sung late night karaoke somewhere in Koreatown with Urkel himself, that’d be a lie.

If all else fails, Halloween is just around the corner.  Did I do that?

Friday Frocks: I Can Love You Sweater.

By |October 5th, 2012|Friday Frocks, Why Did You Wear That?|

oversize sweaterBy now, it should be clear how I feel about knitwear.  Cardigans, pullovers, hats, and gloves.  My favorite piece of knitwear, however, is the sweater dress.  By far one of the most versatile pieces of the autumnal season, it can be worn alone with a great pair of boots, with tights when the brisk breeze turns to a crisp chill, and over leggings when the snow plows start to rumble through the streets.  A slouchy, soft sweaterdress is the equivalent of an oversized boyfriend shirt.  It’s comfortable, easy, and altogether chic.  It also has the overwhelming effect of making you look completely cuddly and I cannot be held responsible if handsome strangers have the overwhelming urge to hug you when wearing one.

Ain’t nothin’ better than a dress that’s also a sweater.

WhyDid or WhyDon’t?: Cut the Cord…

By |October 3rd, 2012|Why Did or Why Don't?|

corduroy bearWhen I think about corduroy, typically Birkenstocks and granola bars come to mind.  It’s been a while since corduroy has been en vogue (though that hasn’t stopped the fine folks of Northern California), but it would seem this fall, the textured textile has made its way back into top boutiques and fashion forward brands fall offerings.

And while wide wale cords sound anything but appealing, I’ve gotta admit… this season’s versions have really grown on me.  In slim cuts and updated colors they look more modern than those of our American Eagle wide legged past.  And what’s better than finally being able to combine fashion and function when the fahrenheit starts to dip?

corduroy pants1. Blank Denim Corduroy Leggings, $88, 2. Forever 21 Skinny Corduroy Pants, $19.80, 3. BDG Twig High-Rise Corduroy Pant, $59, 4. J Brand 511 Mid-Rise Corduroy Skinny Jeans, $175, 5. Current/Elliot Zip Stiletto Corduroy Pants, $255, 6. Gap 1969 Legging Cords, $59.95, 7. Rag & Bone The Skinny Mid-Rise Corduroy Jeans, $175, 8. By Zoe Riri Corduroy Pants, $201, 9. 7 for All Mankind Luxe Corduroy Skinny Jeans, $178, 10. Citizens of Humanity Avedon Luxury Corduroy, $198

So what’s your take on the reinvention of corduroy for fall?
