Setting the Mood: Garnet Girl

By |January 13th, 2014|Setting the Mood|

garnet burgundy oxblood inspiration boardNot only is the garnet January’s gemstone, it also happens to be one of my favorite colors behind black, white and grey and closely followed by ballet pink.  And wouldn’t you know, January just so happens to be my birth month.  The deep red hue most often associated with garnets (did you know they could also be green, yellow, purple, and orange?) is a perfect shade for the chilly winter months.  It looks great in everything from outerwear to accessories to your pouty little lips.  It would appear that I’m not the only fan of the shade as it was quite popular at this year’s Golden Globes.

Friday Frocks: Good LRD (Little Red Dress)

By |December 13th, 2013|Friday Frocks|

valentino redSince most people wouldn’t consider black and white really “colors” per se, I guess I would venture to call red my favorite color- along with ballet pink and sometimes a frosty violet.  That said, there is no better time of year to slip into a crimson creation and strut your stuff all over town… or at least every holiday party where your ex and his new (definitely not as cute or sophisticated as you) arm candy may potentially be this season.  We’ve all (hopefully) secured a LBD and perhaps even LWD, but now it’s time to kick things up a notch in a LRD.  From fire engine red to oxblood to shades of tomato, there is sure to be a LRD that will suit everyone whether porcelain blonde or exotic brunette.  Take your pick.

The List Volume 2012

By |December 29th, 2012|The List|

new years 2013You know how at the end of the year we’re bombarded with all those obnoxious “best of’s” and “top moments of” countdowns?  Well, it’s your lucky day, ’cause I’ve gone ahead and jumped right onto that bandwagon and I’m about to give you my very own “Best of WhyDid 2012” countdown.  It’s always hard to pick your own favorites– not because I’m partial, but actually because I’m my own worst critic.  I’ve selected thirteen (to stay in theme with the upcoming year– I didn’t forget how to count) of my favorites and hopefully some of your favorites as well.  For those of you just now tuning in (shame on you), you’re welcome, here’re the highlights of what you missed and next time get here on time.  It’s rude to be tardy:

  1. Well, I started off the year on the right coast at least.
  2. You can take the girl out of the city… but… well, you know the rest.
  3. I found my new favorite photographer.
  4. You don’t need great buns for a top notch top knot (but I can get ya great buns too).
  5. Might not have been named the “color of the year” but my favorite beverage (and hue) finally got some airtime.
  6. Oh, but wait, I called it.
  7. “I knew I had fallen in love with Lolita forever; but I also knew she would not be forever Lolita.” Vladimir Nabokov, Lolita
  8. Wedge sneakers are stupid, okay?
  9. I’m sure Solange never saw this one coming…
  10. I fixed my eyebrows.  Everyone happy now?
  11. One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish: Would you rather be a big fish in a little pond or little fish in a big pond?
  12. We tried to find a little bit of “truth” in advertising.
  13. And decided that it was finally time to start shining.

While not everything could make the list, it was good to revisit a few of my posts that I may need to print out and glue to my refrigerator as reminders.  What were your favorites?  What made your 2012?

Setting the Mood: Forevergreen

By |October 8th, 2012|Setting the Mood|

fall 2012 green color trend

We’ve already identified oxblood as one of this fall’s standout shades for apparel and accessories, but there’s another hue that’s sure to be a hit this fall and will most likely stay strong straight into the winter.  What  might that color be?  Hunter green, my friends.  For quite some time I was a bit disenchanted with this particular shade (with good reason, of course).  You see, my mom went through a bit of a “green” period during the 90’s and I would be willing to say about 78% or our home was decorated in dark green.  Some might have called it overkill.  We’ll just call it dedication.  I had the same problem with baby carrots and turkey sandwiches for many years after my dad packed them in our lunches every single day for the majority of grade school.

And just like I now enjoy a great turkey sandwich, my feelings towards forest green have also come around.  Fall’s deep shade of green is different than that of emerald green from seasons past.  This evergreen is so dark it could appear almost black and it gives a complete look of luxe.  Find a way to work it into your wardrobe with a knit maxi dress, chic bag, or soft velvet pants.

Friday Frocks: Wine and Dine

By |September 14th, 2012|Friday Frocks|

wine and dineSeeing as weekends in the fall are meant for meeting a man to keep you warm all winter, you’re going to need a fresh frock to welcome in the “cuffing” season.  Sure, we all have the classic LBD, but what about something a little warmer?  Something in this season’s most coveted color, perhaps?  That’s right, I’m talking about switching your shade like you’re switching from rose to pinot noir.  The great thing about fall’s oxblood/burgundy/whatever you’ve decided to call it color is that it’s so very flattering on skin tones from porcelain to caramel to mocha- just like this particular Helmut Lang frock I’ve been lusting after every single time I pass the Intermix on my corner.  So, embrace it ladies, these wine hued frocks are sure to get you wined, dined, and warm all winter.
