Why Did You Wear That: Taylor Made

By |January 22nd, 2010|Why Did You Wear That?|

nothing to wear

Last night a designer saved my life… (okay, two nights ago), but you get my reference to the Mariah Carey song in the oh-so magical “Glitter” right?

Anyway, as you should be well aware, Wednesday was the anniversary of my birth. In true WhyDid form, I decided I hated what I was planning on wearing that evening approximately two hours before we were supposed to be at Allen and Delancey for dinner.   My bff turned ghost white, we’re talking Casper here, when I informed her that I just couldn’t go and we should just cancel.  After digging through my archives and coming up empty handed, a lightbulb went off in this pretty little head of mine.

Kimberly Taylor!!! We threw on our boots (sans socks) and hauled over to her Meatpacking store.  Within 15 minutes, I emerged from the store victoriously with neon green shopping bag in hand.  I’d scored myself an amazing and somehow sexy black silk romper.  Bff breathed a sigh of relief and commented how impressed she was with the ability to not only come up with a new outfit so quickly, but a great outfit at that.  I threw that sucker on with black seamed stockings and sky high heels and off we went to enjoy the night.

How did I know about this little gem?  Well, actually, it was during another crisis.  When I had tried to “Rent the Runway” for my upcoming birthday party, I was unable to reserve anything in my size. Apparently, I’m not the only one planning on partying this evening.  I had walked by Kimberly Taylor several times while going to and from various locations.  I finally went in and found an amazing dress that didn’t completely drain my bank account.

Who is this so called Kimberly Taylor, you ask? Well, she’s a young (by young I mean 24) designer who has a knack for color and simple sexy silhouettes.  There aren’t many stores where you could walk in and out fifteen minutes later feeling fully satisfied. Whether you’re looking for a sexy date top or a flirty frock, you can find it here.

Why Did You Wear That: Here Kitty, Kitty

By |December 21st, 2009|Why Did You Wear That?|

kitten

After dissecting yet another fashion failure with my gay bf, we got sidetracked (shocker) discussing the elusive “kitten heel.”  Dub-Tee-Eff  is a “kitten heel” anyway?

I had to Wikipedia a “kitten heel” in hopes that I would find a good explanation not only for the stupid heel height, but also for the stupid name. Last I checked, cats don’t wear shoes.  Not only did I not get a good explanation, I also didn’t crack the code of feline inspired name.  I suppose it has something to do with the fact that these shoes were introduced as “trainer heels” for teenagers back in the 1950’s.  Um, it’s called diving in head first.  Put little Sally in a pair of five inch Louboutins and tell her to walk! She’ll figure it out. (B-tee-dubs, is this what’s going on with Suri Cruise?)

I’m very much a black and white kind of girl. You’re wearing a heel or you’re wearing flats. What is this “in between” heel? That’s like a boyfriend trying to have his cake and eat it too. No dice, senor. Pick your side of the fence and deal with it.

Why Did You Wear That: There’s a Party in my…

By |December 16th, 2009|Why Did You Wear That?|

Yes, it is that time of year again. So many parties, so little to wear.  Well, like my gay counterpart, I love any good reason to dress up. This includes holiday parties and the cherry on top, New Year’s Eve.  Many of us tend to take the easy route and slap on the same old boring black cocktail dress. Really? I know you switched up the accessories, but if I see that DVF on you one more time, I’m going to projectile vomit (in your direction). Below are some fun ways to spice up the typical cocktail attire.

  • Don’t wear a dress- Why shouldn’t you wear sequin leggings with a pretty top? (*and because I have to- LEGGINGS ARE NOT PANTS). Substitute dressy fabrics (satin, sequins, velvet, brocade) in the form of shorts, pants, or skirts.

  • Wear the pants- Why should guys be the only ones in a tux? Make your own female friendly version or opt for a cute romper like this.

  • Into the night- I’d be lying if I told you I’ve never worn a nightgown out as a dress. I’ve actually done it several times (including NYE ’08). Just make sure it’s not too revealing and actually looks like a dress. (Excessive use of nipples at holiday parties is typically frowned upon- unless you’re crashing a party at the Playboy Mansion).

129 Samantha Golden Beige-2TJulianne Samantha Satin Chemise, AU$129

  • Jump on it- Instead of a dress, try an ultra chic (ultra comfy) jumpsuit. It may make trips to the ladies room more complicated, but you’ll look cute (and that’s what matters).

mmr7948Madison Marcus Glossy Jumpsuit, $435

  • Color yourself bad- Stop being a wallflower and dare to wear something other than black. Pick a festive holiday jewel tone in chiffon or stretch charmeuse.

Party on, dudes.

Why Did You Wear That: Three Strikes and You’re Out!

By |December 11th, 2009|Celebrity Style, Why Did You Wear That?|

While perusing DListed today, I caught sight of something that disturbed me… more than normal.

Oh, I’m sorry, Ms. Anderson, did I NOT already talk to you about this outfit?? Let’s go ahead and overlook the fact that you’re carrying around a book about “big penises” and just talk about you not only RE-WEARING a dress, but a dress that was unflattering and ugly the FIRST time you wore it.  I heard you were having some financial troubles, but I can’t imagine that things got so bad that you needed to recycle FUPA enhancing frocks. Oh Pam… you could always make another sex tape. Cougars are all the rage these days. Just a suggestion.

Why Did You Wear That: High and Dry

By |December 9th, 2009|Why Did You Wear That?|

Since it’s a miserable rainy day in New York today, I thought I’d dedicate this one to celebs and their rain boots.  Perhaps you don’t feel your chicest when strapping on your wellies, but after seeing some seriously stylish ladies parading around in theirs maybe you’ll change your mind. Hey, better than destroying your new suede OTK boots.

I believe Kate Moss was the first to make rain boots chic. Because that’s what Kate Moss does.

Ashley Olsen in Jimmy Choo for Hunter rain boots. (Does she know it’s kind of an oxymoron to be wearing sunglasses at the same time as rainboots?)

Last spring I wrote a little ditty on the Do’s and Don’ts of rainboots. Please review and stay dry!
