home sweet home

What does one do after having a mini meltdown? Go home, of course. No one can nurse a wounded heart and tired soul like Mom and a little good ol’ fashion TLC. So, I went ahead and packed my things and headed to where I call home, Wheeling, West Virginia.

I took it as a good sign when my Dictionary Word of the Day app was, “hegira: noun 1. A journey to a more desirable or congenial place.”  I must have been drunk when I booked my flight seeing as how I’d managed to book a flight with a layover. (It should only take an hour to get from NY to Pittsburgh- I stretched it into three). Upon arrival at Pittsburgh International, I rushed to the bathroom with one too many things in my hands and managed to drop my beloved Blackberry into the toilet. Good work, WhyDid.

This wasn’t the first time I had dropped my phone into some type of body of water so I had high hopes that it would dry out and function after a good session under the blowdryer. Unfortunately, there must be something in the water in Pburgh. No such luck. I was later informed that putting your wet phone in a bag of rice is known to soak out the moisture and get it back up and running. Again, no such luck.

After ordering another phone, I had to come to terms with the fact that I was completely disconnected. Not to mention, my mom’s computer is my computer from college (it’s basically a tin can with wires) and she does not have wireless. The only thing my MacBook Air was good for was iTunes dance parties in the kitchen with mom.

As miserable as this sounds, it actually forced me to focus on having a wholesome good time with my mom. I never talk to her as much as I should or talk to her like the friend that she has become. Not having constant access to BBM, Facebook, Twitter, and Foursquare gave me time to appreciate just being quiet and getting back to the basics like simple conversation and … gasp… being quiet.

While home I realized that there were so many simple pleasures that I had overlooked while living the life in NYC- hula hooping, dance parties, lightning bugs, reading, running, getting to know my mom. I spent a week, which never seems long enough, just being myself. There was no need to put on a show and I felt so incredibly relaxed. I understand that I’m incredibly blessed to have a family like mine and if you have something even remotely close, I suggest you do the same. Sometimes you just need to reconnect with your roots in order to move forward in whatever busy city you are living in.

The List Volume VIII

By |June 18th, 2010|The List|

Seeing as I had a mini meltdown only about a week ago, I thought I’d switch things up and make a list of things that make me smile rather than scream. Yeah, in your face.

  1. Puppies in pet store windows. I have my own, but looking never gets old. (Sound familiar, fellas?)IMG00396-20100616-1637
  2. Marshmallows.
  3. Cartoons- but only cartoons of me (obvsies).SadKikinturtlefarm_2
  4. Flowers in NY. It’s like an unexpected kiss on the forehead.IMG00369-20100614-2027
  5. This guy:16570_216134329886_508539886_2899472_2579567_n(www.jasonscat.com)
  6. Pedicures. No idea what you’re snickering to your friend about, but don’t stop doing what you’re doing.
  7. Carousels.  Bet you didn’t know there’s a full timer over at Chelsea Piers, did you?IMG00224-20100530-1848
  8. Having an extra swipe left on your Metro card when you’re in a hurry.
  9. Waking up with “props” and other collected items in your purse. IMG00216-20100529-1500
  10. Leaving the city you love even just for a little.

Wow, that was painful. No worries, the regular “list” will be back next week.

Why Did You Date Him: Cat Scratch Fever

By |June 16th, 2010|Why Did You Date Him?|

IrishGirls

For years women have endured the cat calls, whistles, and obnoxious shout outs from men on the street. It’s so common in NYC, that I actually no longer even hear it. When people are in from out of town they are appalled by the suggestive, aggressive, and offensive commentary.

Well, the other night, we decided to flip the script. We started treating men like the pieces of meat they’ve been treating us as from the moment we started wearing training bras. Surprisingly, our method was incredibly effective. We had a 95% return on our obnoxious commentary, which is sort of disturbing. It seems that men actually found it incredibly amusing… even (gasp) charming when we hurled lusty dialogue in their direction. Perhaps men appreciated the ladies doing the “work” for once, though I’d hardly consider telling someone to “take their top off” work.

Don’t believe me? Oh, well, don’t you worry… we documented it (obvsies):

And there you have it, my friends. Apparently, that’s all it takes.

Nice ass!

Why Did You Wear That: Is That a Mirror in Your Pants…?

By |June 15th, 2010|Personal Style, Why Did You Wear That?|

party-in-my-pants-costumeYou know I like nothing more than a party in my pants, so it should come as no surprise that I’m a big fan of shiny pants.  We used to associate sequins with tragic prom dresses and Liza Minelli, but now sequins can be worn “just because.”  Dress down your sequins with a casual tee and heels and dance the night away. Why shouldn’t you be the life of the party?

You may wonder why I have not included a sequin top in my picks… it’s because they actually give me heartburn. I’m all about sequins in an unexpected pop, not as a blaring disco ball across your chest. You can have too much of a good thing.

Oh, Hey There…

By |June 14th, 2010|Uncategorized|

You’ve probably been wondering where the eff I disappeared off to last week. Yeah, me too. I wish I could tell you that I was sunning in Santorini with the man of my dreams after eloping on a whim, but alas, my reasoning is not nearly that sexy. This past week has been a bit of a rough go.  I had my heart broken, I got hired, I got fired, made up my mind, changed it, lost my way, found it again – not to mention my ongoing love/hate relationship with the city in which I reside.

That being said… I’m baaaaack. I’ve discussed a few times that I seem to be suffering from what they like to call a “quarter life crisis” and I’m hoping and praying this will be the last bout with it. (Um, besides, I’m kinda heading more into the mid life crisis range at this point). I’ve gone back to my old standby – making a lot of lists and checking things off. Unfortunately, organization is not my strong suit and I’m willing to bet I have adult ADD.  It’s so easy to get distracted by the constant “noise” going on all around us- especially living in NYC. My dad often tells me to go somewhere quiet and just listen.

Sometimes I feel like I’m supposed to have it all figured out and when I look around at some of my peers who seem to have a handle on things, I get completely and utterly flustered. At times, I just shut down because I’m so overwhelmed (hence I just could not manage to type a sentence, crack a joke, or make a video last week).

I don’t want to spend time complaining about my life, because quite honestly, I have it pretty good. What I would like to do is let you guys know that it’s okay to be confused. It’s okay to get lost. It’s okay to make mistakes. There’s no need to compare yourself to others and as long as you stay focused and hold onto your dreams (and sanity), you’ll find your way.

So I do apologize for my absence and lack of crazy antics, but believe it or not, at times I do run out of things to say. I know, hard to believe. Lucky for you, I’ve had a week to stew and am raring to go.
