Why Did You Wear That: Fresh Coat

The only item more clutch to one’s closet than the perfect fall boots is the perfect fall coat. Growing up in Florida, I was unfamiliar with inclement winter weather. Boy, was I in for a rude awakening during my first northeastern snow storm. This was when I took a crash course in dressing for the elements. Never again would I be chilled to the bone without the appropriate outerwear. Someone wise once told me that if you have a nice coat, nice bag, and nice shoes during the winter, it doesn’t really matter whether you’re wearing sweats underneath– no one will even see them. I’m not encouraging that, but I certainly wouldn’t shame you for running to Starbucks in your jammies so long as you cover them accordingly. While you should have one go to coat to cover all occasions, you’re going to need a couple more to fill in the wardrobe gaps. Below are some essential styles that will keep you warm and looking cool.

It’s easy to get melancholy over the falling leaves and temperatures when autumn rolls around. It’s stayed strangely warm this year, but it’s merely a matter of time before you are going to be swaddled in cashmere and merino. I may be biased having spent a portion of my professional life in knitwear, but there is not much I love more than a giant cozy sweater. With destroyed denim, sleek leather, or simple legwear, knitwear is nothing less than versatile. Embrace the chill and find yourself a cozy sweater to snuggle up in.

The List Volume LXXXIX

It’s like sometimes things are so infuriating that my mind explodes before I can find the time to actually get my thoughts written down. Maybe it’s like a sort of natural lobotomy? Or one of those secret agent notes that will self destruct in seven seconds? I know plenty of obnoxious things have happened to me in the last week– let alone month, but when I sit myself down to type up the list, my little manicured fingers just hover there idly above the keyboard and my brain is blank. But then I remember…

Girls who can’t seem to comprehend “girl code.” There’s a reason men coined the phrase, “bros before hoes.”
The woman in my hallway who told me, “Not everyone likes dogs,” after having been greeted by mine.
People who move their lips when they read.
Unsolicited relationship/life advice. Thanks, but no thanks.
Dogs’ faces when forced to go outside in the rain.
Having to take your dog outside in the rain.
The rain.
Irish exits when not being performed by me.
When Smitty barks while I’m applying eyeliner and nearly gouge out my eye.
Being unfollowed on Instagram. Especially by someone I know. Obviously, I take Instagram very seriously.

Beauty Buzz: It’s Just Temporary

I’d wondered before about your feelings on getting tatted up, and it’s still one of my most searched posts. The other day, I was sitting and chatting with one of my best gals, Cat, and we noticed that all of the young starlets and songstresses were using ink as their best accessories. And I can’t lie, I think a lot of them look really cool, but having one tattoo of my own that’s not visible to the general public (sorry, Dad- cat’s outta the bag), I can imagine regretting a more substantial stain of the skin. Call me a commitmentphobe.

The thought of having to explain to little Tommy why his mom has an explicit phrase emblazoned on her forearm, makes me cringe. And let’s not even get into that thing called gravity. A cute little fish on your bum may some day become a whale on the back of your knee caps. But that hasn’t seemed to slow down the beautiful people from Beverly Hills to the Big Apple. Hollywood’s biggest stars from the queen of twerk to leading lady of the runway are expressing themselves in a dermal way- one of which is having hers removed due to a type-o. Whoops.

So, we decided we were going to go ahead and get ourselves some henna fakies. And then I saw a status update regarding a little something called jagua. Inquiring minds had to know. I went ahead and fired up, good ol’ Google. Wouldn’t you know, I could order an at home kit and create my very own temporary tattoos. I also got more help after I had a look at these guys. And order I did. Thanks to Amazon.com, I received my DIY kit within a couple of days and I couldn’t wait to test it out. One fine fall evening, we headed up to the roof and started to draw all over each other. We began by testing the pre-made designs, but our creative geniuses (and that liter of wine) got the best of us and we went free hand. From hashtags to this little reminder I painted on my forearm, we went wild. Take that, Miley.

While we had taken the time to read the directions (a novel idea for me), we didn’t really take them as seriously as we should have. Trust me, there’s a reason they include a pair of latex gloves. Not only did we awake with hangovers, we also had stained fingers and smudged designs. When the directions said to let it dry, they meant it. Anything we’d wiped or tried to correct appeared the next day. A bit of scrubbing and some patience erased our mistakes, but true to promise, the art will stay on for a solid two weeks. Verdict? A great way to test out a tat, but be sure to not drink and ink.

WhyDid or Why Don’t: The Rest Is a Little Scrunchie

Alright, when I said the 90’s revival was something I could get behind, I seem to have forgotten about one trend that probably should stay tucked safely inside that decades’ time capsule. The scrunchie. Ah yes, that fabric covered hair tie of school days past. Be it in your hair or on your wrist, you were nobody without a color coordinated scrunchie. Despite the upside of the scrunchie (less stress on your tresses), I’m not sure it’s one hair trend that I want to see resurrected. And isn’t that why they invented these?

As Carrie Bradshaw so adeptly stated in an episode of Sex and the City:

“Okay, but here’s the thing. Here’s my crucial point. No women who works at W Magazine and lives on Perry Street would be caught dead at a hip downtown restaurant wearing a scrunchie!”

But alas, designers like Vivienne Westwood, Ashish, Missoni, and Marc Jacobs sent looks down the catwalk accessorized with this beauty throwback (you can buy a $95 Missoni one here). Even “it” girls Fearne Cotton and Cressida Bonas have been seen keeping stray strands at bay with the aid of a scrunchie. Former “it” girls all over the trend? Lisa Turtle, all three Tanner girls, and, gasp, even Sarah Jessica Parker herself.
