Monday Mashup: MET Madness

By |May 3rd, 2011|Monday Mashup, Red Carpet Recap|

The gorgeous and well groomed came out to strut their stuff down the red carpet for the MET Ball this evening.  Where most red carpets are a bit of a bore, the Costume Gala always proves to be  more interesting seeing as it is thrown by the fashion elite (you don’t see Anna Wintour at the Grammy’s).  Each year, the gala is themed and this year was “Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty.”  Talk about one hell of a week for McQueen creative director, Sarah Burton.  A royal wedding followed by the year’s biggest fashion fete.

Above Tory Burch and Taylor Swift (in J. Mendel) slipped into their red carpet best and while both look absolutely beautiful (thanks for ditching that side swept ‘do, Taylor!) they look uncomfortably similar.  These dresses look like they could have been cut from the same cloth (oh yes, pun intended).

Tory and Taylor weren’t the only lookalikes this evening.  Quite a few starlets, and style icons were seen wearing similar get ups.

Ginnifer Goodwin in custom Top Shop, Barbara Walters

Too easy.

Rosie Huntington Whiteley in Burberry, Brooklyn Decker in Michael Kors

Two blonde supermodels, one color. I love Rosie Huntington Whitely.  She’s absolutely beautiful and I do love Brooklyn’s dress.  I just wish they could have swapped outfits.

Kate Hudson in Stella McCartney, Jessica Alba in Ralph Lauren Collection

No, this is not season 4 of Teen Mom Goes to Prom.  These are just two very pregnant actresses dressed in prom gowns for the gala.

Dakota Fanning in Valentino, Fergie in Marchesa

Speaking of teens… why is Fergie dressed in the same outfit as seventeen year old Dakota Fanning (who is very much age appropriately dressed)?

Sarah Jessica Parker in Alexander McQueen, Renee Zellweger in Carolina Herrera, Gwyneth Paltrow in Stella McCartney

Seems that slinky metallics were all the rage for the over 40 set.  I can’t help but think these dresses look awfully similar to Anne Hathaway at the Golden Globes

Freida Pinto in Chanel, Janelle Monae, Anna Dello Russo in Alexander McQueen and egg hat

Three perfect examples of why women should stick to womenswear and stay away from menswear.

Chrissy Teigen in Chris March, Beyonce in Emilio Pucci, Lucy Liu in Vionnet, Christina Hendricks in Carolina Herrera, Demi Moore in Prabal Gurung, Kirsten Dunst in Chanel

These six sexy black widows actually all ended up on my worst dressed list… just mere coincidence that they’re all in black.  Preparing for their fashion funeral perhaps?

Gisele Bunchden in Alexander McQueen, Dianna Agron in Michael Kors, Saorise Ronan in Rodarte, Kristen Stewart in Proenza Schouler, Emily Browning in Marc Jacobs

I’ve organized these ladies in red from “red hot” to “red not even kind of a little bit. uh uh.”

Diane Kruger in Jason Wu, Christina Ricci in Zac Posen, Bar Rafaeli, Ashley Greene in Donna Karan, Lily Aldridge in Ralph Lauren Collection, Leelee Sobieski in Vionnet

These six stunners got their red carpet looks right.  They are each wearing one of the above trends or themes that were so popular at this year’s MET, but they got it right rather than oh so wrong. These beauties were able to separate themselves from the savages.

Girl Crush: Kiss Me Kate!

By |April 28th, 2011|Celebrity Style, Why Did You Wear That?|

As we all wait with bated breath to see what the beautiful brunette Kate Middelton will wear when she walks down the aisle to wed William, let’s take a look back at a few of her fabulous outfits.

I mean, despite the obvious- she’s gorgeous- this princess in waiting has completely mastered polished and timeless attire.  Knee high boots, tights, fitted frocks, and of course, quirky headwear are just a few of her staples.

While the girl knows how to dress the part, what I’m really impressed with the way she played her cards. If you’re under the impression that Kate and Wills just locked across eyes across the university cafeteria and the rest was history, you’re mistaken.

There was Jecca and Anna and Arabella. Oh my.

What did Kate do?  Handled herself with class and dignity.  She let William sew his wild oats while keeping her composure and proving that looking good is definitely the best revenge.

Why Did You Wear That: Candy Coated Rain Drops

By |March 22nd, 2011|Why Did You Wear That?|

I get that everyone is itching for spring to show up.  And fast.  However, it seems that some of you have forgotten that little grade school ditty, “April showers bring May flowers.”  Ah, yes, we have an entire month more of moody weather before the clouds part and the birds chirp.  Seeing as I spent the last 5 years in New York City, I know a thing or two about navigating Mother Nature’s temperamental tendencies.  Having a few simple things in your arsenal can help take a rainy day from miserable to manageable.

  1. Rain repellent coat: It’s tricky to find a coat that is 1. warm, 2. cute, 3. water resistant, but I think I’ve found the answer here, Burberry Zip Front Field Jacket with Detachable Hood, $695
  2. Scarf: You don’t necessarily need a scarf, but I like one to keep any stray rain drops from making themselves at home inside my coat.  Also, in seriously inclement weather, it can double as a guard for your tediously blown out tresses, Love Quotes Hand Knotted Tassel Scarf, $88
  3. Rainboots: I’ve mentioned before that I worked in offices full of girls in wellies.  However, at times, the rain is only here for a short while.  Then you’re stuck all day looking like a jerk in giant rubber boots.  I love these because they actually double as pretty cute combat boots, Hunter Bixen Rainboots, $150
  4. Rain repellent tote: Your bag will get wet.  It just will.  No use drenching your Balenciaga.  Swap out your everyday bag for a waterproof tote to keep it and its contents safe from the storm, Matt and Nat Zocalo Tote, $175
  5. Sturdy and portable umbrella: Emphasis on sturdy.  I have had way too many dinky umbrellas blow inside out on me to trust a $5 ‘brella off the street.  At the same time, I have no interest in toting around a walking stick size umbrella either,  Windpro Auto Umbrella, $24.85
  6. Anti Frizz product: The cherry on top with bad weather is the havoc it wreaks on our follicles.  Might as well protect your hair from the humidity ahead of time, Ouidad Climate Control Heat and Humidity Gel, $22

Come again another day!

Would You Wednesday: Sock on This

By |February 2nd, 2011|Why Did or Why Don't?|

For as long as I can remember, socks and sandals have not only been a fashion faux pas, they’ve been a fashion “oh heeeeell no.”  Well, it seems things, they are a changin’… or it’s just another sign of the apocalypse.  In any case, it seems that wearing socks with your sandals is becoming somewhat socially acceptable.

Shown above by Burberry, socks with sandals can actually look quite chic and the trend is popping up all over the place for spring.  While I like it in the photo, I worry that like most things, this trend will not be translated properly by the masses and then we’ll be bombarded with a bunch of jackasses who got it all wrong.  I guess this a good trend for the gals who can’t wait to wear their new spring sandals… or just need a pedicure.

So, socks and sandals: tres geek or tres chic?

You sock.

Why Did You Wear That: The Essentials

By |July 22nd, 2010|Why Did You Wear That?|

As I’m getting older (and older… and older…) I have come to realize that what they say about “quality over quantity” is oh-so-very true. During my last closet clean out, I noticed that I had a ton of garbage and duplicate garbage that when added together could have amounted to one really nice piece as opposed to several shitty pieces. Just like friends, boyfriends, and old receipts… sometimes you’ve got to clean out the old, to make room for the new.

Black Pants: You may think of these as boring and what waitresses/caterers wear, but they are a fool proof option for dressing up, dressing sexy, or dressing for work. They can carry you from summer to winter seamlessly. Get a pair that fits you well or have them tailored to get them just right.

0488266486033R__ASTL_300x400Vince Ponte Skinny Ski Pants, $245

White Blouse: There is nothing more classic than a clean white shirt. A simple white blouse can be worn in so many different ways and can be incredibly alluring when styled correctly.

irissinger_2117_339512887Equipment Signature Blouse, $178

Cashmere Sweater: An absolute must for any girl on the go. Stashing your lightweight cardi somewhere handy can take you from day to night.

eqzoom85.msBCBG Cashmere Boyfriend Cardigan, $144

Pencil Skirt: I don’t think anyone would argue that there’s nothing sexier than a woman in a well fit pencil skirt and heels. This is an absolute necessity and any chic girl’s closet.

76845_fr_lDVF Wool Panel Pencil Skirt, $245

Classic Pumps: Even if they hurt a little, a classic pair of black pumps can be worn with just about anything (including your black pants or pencil skirt).

Picture 2Christian Louboutin Platform Pump, $695

Everyday Bag: This is basically your day to day carry on luggage. You need to carry everything from your wallet, to your change of shoes, to your portfolio. Needs to be durable and preferably have a lot of pockets to stash your goodies and keep you organized.

Picture 1Balenciaga Giant City Tote Bag, $1400

Clutch: All it needs to hold is your credit cards, ID, cash, cellphone, keys, lipgloss and camera- all while being cute.

rmink2036518179_p2_v1_m56577569831935495_254x500Rebecca Minkoff The Clutch, $350

Trench: A classic trench is a staple for brisk fall days and chilly spring nights.

So clean out the clutter and replace it with quality staple pieces that will last.
