Setting the Mood: Just Another Day at the Beach

By |April 9th, 2012|Setting the Mood|

vintage beach photosI’m not quite sure where the phrase, “Life’s a beach.” came from, but I am quite certain if that were the case, people would be a whole lot happier.  Whether it be the white sandy beaches off the Gulf Coast of Florida or the majestic rocky points in Half Moon Bay, the beach is one of those things that’s just so beautiful no man could have made it.  Most people have fond memories from time spent by the sea.  I know I do.  (Well, except that incident with a dragonfly in Daytona).  We spent our summers there, took family vacations there, and some who are very lucky call it home.  With the weather warming up, it’s hard not to start daydreaming about spreading out your towel on the soft sand and soaking up a little bit of sun (with proper SPF, of course).

Friday Frocks: Cadbury Cuties

By |April 6th, 2012|Friday Frocks, Why Did You Wear That?|

easter bonnetWhile some of you may only look forward to the Easter season for those delicious Cadbury cream eggs and Peeps, others take this day pretty seriously.  For instance, my mother.  For as long as I had no say in the matter, my mom decked me out from head to toe (literally).  She didn’t just stop with a pretty pastel frock for Sunday service.  She went as far as sewing fresh flowers into my bonnet and that little handbag I was holding.  She was at least kind enough to tuck away some jelly beans in my bag so as to keep me quiet during all those songs at church.  Did I mention I’m tone deaf?  Anyway, if you’re anything like my mom, you’re probably looking to deck yourself out this Sunday.  Lucky for you (and the Easter bunny), everything pastel and floral is right on trend this spring and you should have no trouble at all finding something pretty to wear.   And for my non-Easter celebrating friends, Happy Passover.  Chag Sameach.

The List Volume LXVIII

By |April 6th, 2012|The List|

katy perry leggings cameltoeIt’s no secret that I love checking the crazy things people Google to find WhyDid.  Sometimes they are just simple things like “what to wear to Soho House” or “what to wear to the airport.”  Other times, the topics are a bit more obscure like “hardest nipples in Hollywood” and I have to stop to ask, “You touch your mother with those fingers?”  This week was no different.  As per usual, cameltoe tops the list and you guys really, really love Katy Perry.  Well, I’m here to do what I do best and that is give the people what they want!!  Here’s ten of this week’s more Googled topics:

  1. Can I wear black to a garden wedding.  I mean, you can.  But do you really want to be that morbid girl wearing black at such a joyous event?  Try these for guidelines instead.
  2. White girl weave.  Not only have I worn one, I’ve expressed my great love for them.
  3. Gladstones MalibuLove, love, love this place.  And yes, yes I did go there when in LA a couple of months ago.  bloody mary gladstones
  4. Kirsten Smith Maxim.  As it turns out, I might have made an appearance.  If you can find it, congratulations.  You’ve got too much time on your hands.
  5. How to do a top knot.  I love a good top knot.  Here’s a step by step tutorial… but I think I’m going to have to make a video soon.top knot
  6. Celebrities wearing sneakers.  Everyone from Ann Hathaway to Alessandra Ambrosio was seen sporting stylish sneaks.
  7. Kerastase Cristalliste.  There has been so much interest in this line.  Stay tuned for a veeeery exciting contest…
  8. Girl wearing glasses.  I guess people really dig girls who wear glasses.  Just please don’t be one of those people who wears fake ones… girl wearing glasses
  9. Chalking hair.  Did a little tutorial on that.  I might add spraying hair with hairspray to set color as well. chalk hair
  10. Explanation why you stupid.  I got nothing.

The search continues.

Real People, Real Style: Got Me on My Knees, Leila

By |April 5th, 2012|Real People Real Style|

Leila Moghim LarsenWhen I met Leila, I liked her immediately.  She’s warm, funny, and genuine.  A lot like her brand, Silly Lips.   Last weekend,  I was lucky enough to assist styling at the Silly Lips photoshoot with photographer extraordinaire, Aaron Katen.  All of the Silly Lips girls were so fun to be around and it was a pleasure getting to see the girls in action (and living up to their monikers).  Find out a little bit more about Leila and fall in love with her too!

Name:  Leila Larsen

Wearing: Aryn K blouse, Genetic Denim jeans, Forever 21 wedges, accessories from Zou Zou Boutique

Occupation:  Owner/President of Silly Brand, LLC (silly lips lip balm)

Hometown/Current Town:  Memphis, TN / Orlando, FL

1. I would describe my style as:  Girlie but laid back…  I would say it’s simple- spiced up with accessories.  I am kinda obsessed with bracelets.

2.  I can’t leave the house without:  My evil-eye.  If I’m not wearing it, I have one tucked away in my purse at all times… and of course some Silly Lips balm!

3. Based on wardrobe alone, if I could live in any time period, it would be:  This is a hard one.  I’m torn between the 50’s and 70’s.  I really love the 50’s and how everyone dressed up (poodle skirts, skinny capris, scarves, etc.) but the 70’s brought us a variety of laid-back styles that I still love today.  Okay, if I had to choose one, I would say the 70’s.  I look way better in platforms than in flats!

4. Best/biggest splurge (worth every penny):  My wedding dress.  I wish I could wear it everyday.

5. Best fashion advice I’ve ever received:  “You should probably start plucking your eyebrows.”

6. Biggest fashion pet peeve (a trend that just needs to go away):  I am really not sure if I have an answer for this.  I guess I would have to say my biggest fashion pet peeve would be all of the trends that look terrible on me (i.e. palazzo pants & thong bikinis).  Ha!

7. What I would tell my 13 year old self:  Your parents actually do know more than you do.  You are not going to be a doctor….and please don’t throw away that hyper-color t-shirt (it’s still the coolest fashion “invention” ever!).

8. Weirdest beauty trick that I swear by:  When I don’t get enough sleep the night before, I put Preparation H under my eyes to get rid of the puffiness. Try explaining why you have a tube of that in your makeup bag!

9. Don’t care if it ever goes out of style, I’m going to keep wearing:  Big watches, big jewelry and HIGH heels.

10. I would love to trade closets with: Nicole Richie for everyday wear and Kate Middleton for formal events.

11.  This summer I can’t wait to wear:  Maxi dresses and wedges.

Fun fact:  I love arts and crafts 🙂  I made my own save-the-dates & wedding invitiations!  However, there should be a disclaimer that if you decide to do this on your own, you should factor in a lot less sleep and a lot more money, but for me it was well-worth the finished product!

Now go get silly with your own Silly Lips selves.

Would You Wednesday: Whose Side Are You On?

By |April 4th, 2012|Why Did or Why Don't?|

celebrities side boobThe side boob isn’t really anything new, but in the past couple of years, it’s been making a pretty strong campaign to be the new sexy skin .  Could it be?  Side boob the new cleavage?  Somehow the side boob is sexy without being slutty.  It’s suggestive without being too saucy.  Celebrities have been spotted all over town letting their mammaries sneak out the side to catch some fresh air.  I’m talking about good girls like Ann Hathaway and Lauren Conrad.  I mean, it’s not like I’m using Lindsay Lohan as my moral compass.  Even magazines have taken notice of this sneaky sideways trend and April’s covers are smattered with side boob.

This past weekend, I slipped into a new dress that was not exactly brassiere friendly.  So, I snapped that baby right off and wore the dress sans support.  When I gave myself a gander in the mirror, I wondered, “Is there such a thing as too much side boob?”  Well, what could I do but take a quick poll on Twitter?:

Uh, Dad, if you’re reading… I absolutely wore a sweater over this.  When I arrived at my destination, there were a few more young children than I had anticipated so I did keep my arms mostly glued to my sides so as to avoid any awkward nursing attempts.  What did everyone else think of my free flowing friends?  The general consensus was positive.  Both males and females commented on my peek-a-boo sideshow.  Granted, I did get a couple of not so friendly glances from a few women, but I guess that’s to be expected.  It seems that the side boob is also less offensive than the over the top push up cleavage of days yore.

So, now I ask you, my lovely WhyDid readers:  Is “side boob” the new cleavage?  And is there such a thing as too much?

Now, pick a side.
