Why Did You Wear That: Emmy’s Ladies in Red

By |September 18th, 2011|Red Carpet Recap, Why Did You Wear That?|

Tonight at the 63rd Annual Emmy Awards, there was one trend that was made very, very apparent.  The color of the evening?  Red, red, red.  From Kathy Griffin to Lea Michele, Hollywood’s small screen starlets were sporting this award season’s hottest color.  From shiny satin to scattered sequins, red popped on all skin tones and hair colors.  Guess these beauties were reading WhyDid (wink, wink).  The red carpet has never looked so good.

Why I Can’t Sit Through the VMA’s

By |August 28th, 2011|Red Carpet Recap|

Oh sweet heaven above. Perhaps I’m just getting old, but I tuned into the MTV VMA pre-show because you know I love to blog about the oh so crazy fashion on the red carpet. However, after witnessing Justin Bieber arrive with a snake named “Johnson” followed by Nicki Minaj in another one of Lady Gaga’s rejected costumes, I couldn’t take much more. Then Katy Perry showed up with pink hair and Asian garb- complete with parasol- and I’d had enough. I needed to make a cocktail if I was going to attempt to sit through this shit storm. (Irene who?)

When I returned with a Bloody Mary, there was a very strange man performing “You And I.” Was I drunk on vodka fumes alone? Oh, it’s just Gaga.

You know who’s not drunk? Beyonce.

Now I’m gonna go finish my cocktail and if I have it in me will continue with red carpet commentary.

Monday Mashup: MET Madness

By |May 3rd, 2011|Monday Mashup, Red Carpet Recap|

The gorgeous and well groomed came out to strut their stuff down the red carpet for the MET Ball this evening.  Where most red carpets are a bit of a bore, the Costume Gala always proves to be  more interesting seeing as it is thrown by the fashion elite (you don’t see Anna Wintour at the Grammy’s).  Each year, the gala is themed and this year was “Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty.”  Talk about one hell of a week for McQueen creative director, Sarah Burton.  A royal wedding followed by the year’s biggest fashion fete.

Above Tory Burch and Taylor Swift (in J. Mendel) slipped into their red carpet best and while both look absolutely beautiful (thanks for ditching that side swept ‘do, Taylor!) they look uncomfortably similar.  These dresses look like they could have been cut from the same cloth (oh yes, pun intended).

Tory and Taylor weren’t the only lookalikes this evening.  Quite a few starlets, and style icons were seen wearing similar get ups.

Ginnifer Goodwin in custom Top Shop, Barbara Walters

Too easy.

Rosie Huntington Whiteley in Burberry, Brooklyn Decker in Michael Kors

Two blonde supermodels, one color. I love Rosie Huntington Whitely.  She’s absolutely beautiful and I do love Brooklyn’s dress.  I just wish they could have swapped outfits.

Kate Hudson in Stella McCartney, Jessica Alba in Ralph Lauren Collection

No, this is not season 4 of Teen Mom Goes to Prom.  These are just two very pregnant actresses dressed in prom gowns for the gala.

Dakota Fanning in Valentino, Fergie in Marchesa

Speaking of teens… why is Fergie dressed in the same outfit as seventeen year old Dakota Fanning (who is very much age appropriately dressed)?

Sarah Jessica Parker in Alexander McQueen, Renee Zellweger in Carolina Herrera, Gwyneth Paltrow in Stella McCartney

Seems that slinky metallics were all the rage for the over 40 set.  I can’t help but think these dresses look awfully similar to Anne Hathaway at the Golden Globes

Freida Pinto in Chanel, Janelle Monae, Anna Dello Russo in Alexander McQueen and egg hat

Three perfect examples of why women should stick to womenswear and stay away from menswear.

Chrissy Teigen in Chris March, Beyonce in Emilio Pucci, Lucy Liu in Vionnet, Christina Hendricks in Carolina Herrera, Demi Moore in Prabal Gurung, Kirsten Dunst in Chanel

These six sexy black widows actually all ended up on my worst dressed list… just mere coincidence that they’re all in black.  Preparing for their fashion funeral perhaps?

Gisele Bunchden in Alexander McQueen, Dianna Agron in Michael Kors, Saorise Ronan in Rodarte, Kristen Stewart in Proenza Schouler, Emily Browning in Marc Jacobs

I’ve organized these ladies in red from “red hot” to “red not even kind of a little bit. uh uh.”

Diane Kruger in Jason Wu, Christina Ricci in Zac Posen, Bar Rafaeli, Ashley Greene in Donna Karan, Lily Aldridge in Ralph Lauren Collection, Leelee Sobieski in Vionnet

These six stunners got their red carpet looks right.  They are each wearing one of the above trends or themes that were so popular at this year’s MET, but they got it right rather than oh so wrong. These beauties were able to separate themselves from the savages.

Why Did You Wear That: Red Hot Red Carpet

By |February 28th, 2011|Red Carpet Recap|

Without a doubt the color of the 2011 Academy Awards was fierce, fiery, red.  From the beautifully structured Vera Wang gown donned by the always stunning Sandra Bullock, to the incredibly minimal Calvin Klein sheath that Jennifer Lawrence slipped into, red was the color that stole the show.  These ladies prove that anyone can look stellar in red.  Whether you are a deep brunette or a sunny blonde, all you need to do is choose the right shade of crimson for you.

If you didn’t go for bold fire engine red, you might have picked something shimmery.  Metallics were still very strong on the red carpet for the Oscars.  One of my very favorites was the ethereal Monique Lhuillier gown worn by Mandy Moore. Also wearing a gauzy gown, was Halle Berry in Marchesa.  My only qualm with her is that same old hairdo.  Time for an update, girl.  Hailee Steinfeld also wore Marchesa (designed for her!) and looked absolutely adorable and age appropriate.  I think we have a future fashionista on our hands.

Two other lovely ladies who wore the metallic trend were Gwyneth Paltrow in Calvin Klein and Celine Dion in Armani Prive.  I must admit, my initial reaction to Gwyneth was “Ick!”  The more I looked at her and saw detail shots, the more I loved how simple and chic her sequin sheath was.  Celine picked a perfect Armani Prive option.  It’s hard to believe this woman just gave birth to twins!

One of the first dresses that I saw when tuning into the red carpet arrivals was Mila Kunis’s Elie Saab gown.  Although I was really nervous about her having a nip slip at any given moment, I already knew she was my best dressed for the evening.  I absolutely loved that shade of lavender on her (or really on anyone for that matter).  The dress was detailed and romantic without being fussy.  Another dress in this same hue, was Cate Blanchett’s Givenchy creation.  This was another dress that I despised upon first glance, but I have to say, the detailing on it was amazing and the color was perfect with her hair and makeup.  I also love the pop of citrusy yellow/green beading that carries over to the back. I think it’s the weird square sleeve’lettes that are throwing me off.

The next two dresses were quite controversial as I watched my Twitter feed this evening.  At first glance, I really like the way Amy Adams looks in her L’wren Scott sequined column dress.  There’s nothing prettier than a red head wearing navy blue.  However, her accessories were totally unnecessary.  She didn’t need them at all.  A lot of people were calling this “Jessica Rabbit gone wrong” but I think it was a really pretty look for her.  Marisa Tomei sported a vintage Charles James navy gown.  I really don’t like this dress.  Mostly because it just does not fit her.  It is totally ill fitted and it actually looks uncomfortable under her armpits.

I’m fairly certain everyone was waiting with bated breath to see what Natalie Portman would wear tonight.  She was a late arrival and some even thought she might not do the red carpet at all due to her impending pregnancy.  But alas, she arrived in Rodarte and looked absolutely flawless.  She appeared to be completely miserable during her interviews on the red carpet, but let’s just blame that on pregnancy hormones.  Another man’s fantasy woman who wore a similar shade was Scarlett Johansson.  As beautiful as she is, her Dolce and Gabbana reminded me of something you could have purchased from bebe circa 2002.  I also, am not digging her new ‘do whatsoever.  All I wanted to do was spritz her with some dry shampoo and run a brush through it not to mention the FUPA illusion it is giving her.

I can’t say that I was truly appalled by anyone’s outfit this evening, which is totally disappointing… well, except Mark Ruffalo’s wife’s bizarre extra arm appendage dress thingy. So who were you favorites on the red carpet?

Monday Mashup: Grammy Edition x 2

By |February 14th, 2011|Monday Mashup, Red Carpet Recap|

Let’s first talk about how obnoxious it was that the West Coast had a delayed viewing of the Grammy’s.  I already knew who wore what and who won what before seeing a second of footage.  So basically, I watched the Grammy’s twice.  This theme carried throughout the entire evening.  Seemed that everything was coming in pairs- aka- twice the pain.

The “buzz” for the evening was Lady Gaga arriving to the awards in an egg.  Yep, an egg.  Apparently, she was “incubating.”  I mean… I can’t.  I give people credit for being different, but sometimes trying too hard to be “different” merely makes you the same as everyone else.  I don’t want to point out the obvious, but that performance by Gaga was pretty reminiscent of a very “materialistic” pop icon who was once known for being “innovative” herself.  So, now I turn to you Nicki Minaj.  What are you trying to pull?  Why must you try so hard to shock us with these crazy get ups?  If you’re going to attempt to catch our attention, you’re gonna have to work a wee bit harder when you’ve got Lady Gaga walking the same red carpet as you.

A group of incredibly talented and lovely ladies paid tribute to the amazingly talented  Aretha Franklin.  While they did a fantastic job rounding up gals with some serious pipes, you can’t help but notice that Christina Aguilera blew them all out of the water.  It’s a good thing that Ms. Aguilera is talented because the way she’s been looking lately is just frightening.  I can’t help but think she looks a lot like a certain pork filled childhood pal…

Okay, so Snooki will never actually look like JLo.  However, Jenny from the Block may want to make sure her stylist isn’t moonlighting as Snooki’s stylist, which is very possible because Snookster looks a lot better than her usual hamster self.

Besties Katy Perry (in Armani) and Rihanna (in Jean Paul Gaultier) opted for white.  Both also opted to look like they were wearing costumes.  Katy is clearly an angel (see the wings?) and RiRi is most obviously a furry white caterpillar, duh. Guuuuys… this is the GRAMMY’s, not Halloween!

So basically, Natasha Bedingfield is wearing Ciara’s dress pre-run-in with weed wacker.

One of these things is not like the others.  One of these things just isn’t the same…  Give up?  Well, everyone here has a talent EXCEPT one.  Still stuck?

Oh… well, that’s just awkward.

So, while, I did tune into the Grammy’s this evening, I’m kind of wishing I hadn’t.  Lucky for me, I DVR’ed it.  So, in reality, I could watch it a third time.
