Why Did You Wear That: MTV VMA’s (Very Much a Mess)

Katy Perry in Emanual Ungaro, Ellie Goulding, Becky G, Holland Roden in Naeem Khan

So, pretty much the VMA’s were the equivalent to the hangover I had from this weekend. And as a matter of fact, they actually made me want to drink more (Don’t worry, mom, I didn’t). For starters, when MTV hosts the Video Music Awards in Brooklyn, you know Brooklyn has lost all its “edge”- kind of like teen pregnancy and Lady Gaga. Guess it’s time to move back to the East Village, kids.

Speaking of Lady Gaga, who is apparently still making music, she started things off by impersonating her favorite internet meme: cat breading.

Don’t worry, she didn’t stay clothed for long. And not to be outdone, Miley Cyrus followed suit by also wearing some type of prosthetic panties for her performance with Robin Thicke, so I watched the rest of the show naked. We get it, Miley. You’re a bad girl. Side note: if Paula Patton knocked Miley upside her head for nuzzling her husband’s neck and teenage twerking, would that be considered child abuse?

No Pants, No Problem:

Things didn’t get much better from there or on the red carpet. I really have nothing good to report regarding the fashion from the evening… I mean, Rihanna skipped the red carpet altogether. There were, however, lots of leather clad children running amok. Perhaps this is where I show my age, because I had no idea who half of the individuals interviewed by Sway were (I don’t think he did either). I was actually shamed by two tweens the other night for not knowing who One Direction is. Noted, ladies. I wonder which 1D member stands to be the Justin Timberlake of ‘NSYNC. You see what happens to the others, guys… Dance harder.

From feathers and sequins, lots of leather, and more crop tops, stars left very little to the imagination. Even good girl, Selena Gomez, had an intentional wardrobe malfunction in her Atelier Versace. And what’s worse? Showing up for your big night wearing the same thing as someone else much like 2Chainz and Grimes did. I honestly, don’t know what could be more awkward than that …. oh, right… Taylor Swift’s dance moves.

Why Did You Wear That: Lean, Mean, Teen Machines

By |August 12th, 2013|Red Carpet Recap, Why Did You Wear That?|

Anna Camp in Emilio Pucci, Nelly, JWow

If you weren’t wearing leather or a crop top last night, you weren’t at the Teen Choice Awards.  Yes, apparently award season has begun, yet again (did it ever end?), starting off with this year’s Teen Choice Awards.  I didn’t actually watch it because, A). I didn’t even know it was happening and B). I was busy holding court on my rooftop with my newlywed best friend and her happy husband.  However, I do love a red carpet recap, so I have taken the liberty of sorting through some of last night’s looks for your viewing pleasure (or displeasure).

Don’t worry, I don’t know who half of these people are either.  I’d most likely have more luck identifying rare South American rainforest fauna.  Yet, I don’t struggle in the least when it comes to spotting the good, the green, and the obscenely ridiculous looks of the red carpet.  Whether you love or loathe crop tops- they’re happening and though it may still be mid-summer, you’d be better off looking for a pair of leather pants (and potentially bra top) for fall.  Green in all hues was the color of the carpet though it didn’t necessarily result in envy.  Nelly, Sandra, and Kerry may have been the only attendees over the age of 30, but these teen queens are all but bursting at the seams to show off their fashion chops pushing all boundaries. Why Did You Wear That: Ugh, Send me the Bill-I’m Bored.

By |May 19th, 2013|Celebrity Style, Red Carpet Recap|

Sure was a good thing that I spent the afternoon reading and napping, cause I am not sure I’ve ever been so bored by an awards show.  The Billboard Music Awards was so slow moving I was left wondering if everyone was handed a Xanax on their way in to their seats.  And that’s not really where my questions end.  Are they actually giving out awards at this thing and is it co-sponsored by Zuhair Murad?  PSY was nominated for multiple awards in the rap category?  Tupac just rolled over in his grave.  Was lip syncing a requirement? Are some of these stars gunning for a spot on next season of Dancing with the Stars?  Did everyone’s invitation get lost in the mail? (Mine did).  Where’s Rihanna when you need her?

Drop crotch leather pants, unicorn t-shirts, body slamming– and no, I’m not describing my weekend.  Ke$sha was looking, well, not like Ke$ha in an ensemble that leads me to believe she just came straight from the pool at Wet Republic.  I understand this isn’t the Oscars, let alone the Met gala, but it was such slim pickings on the “blue carpet” that I nearly threw in the towel and smashed my guitar halfway through watching.  But alas, no one likes a quitter, so here are my picks for best, worst, and WTF?! of the night.

Platinum Bound:

Selena Gomez in Atelier Versace, Taylor Swift in Zuhair Murad, Miley Cyrus in Balmain, Jennifer Lopez in Zuhair Murad

Going Gold:

Alyssa Milano, Kelly Rowland in Rami Al Ali, Stana Katic, Kimberly Perry

Carly Rae Jepsen in Dyanthe, Emmy Rossum in Zuhair Murad, Ke$ha in Givenchy, Jennifer Morrison in Kristian Aadvenik

One Hit Wonders:

Nayer, Z Lala, Jenny McCarthy, Ariana Grande

Maybe I need to take up an instrument.

Red Carpet Recap: Requirements Were Met.

By |May 7th, 2013|Celebrity Style, Red Carpet Recap|

Julie Macklowe in Zang Toi, Zandra Rhodes, Madonna in Givenchy, Sarah Jessica Parker in Giles Deacon

Since 1948 the Metropolitan Museum of Art has hosted the Met Ball (also known as the Costume Institute Ball) to fete the opening of the fashion exhibit at the Costume Institute.  Every year, the event has a theme that attendees are encouraged to channel with their chosen attire.  This year’s theme was deemed Punk: Chaos to Couture and that got the fashion world in a bit of a tizzy.  A stripped down rock starting between 1974 and 1976 characterized by DIY principles and sub-culture rooted in anti-establishment and rebellious youth, would fashion’s elite really relate to the theme seeing as some of them hadn’t even been conceived when punk was present?  The red carpet proved to be a bit of a crap shoot, which was made especially apparent when Hailee Steinfeld referenced Avril Lavigne as “punk.”

Some ladies played it subtle by simply accessorizing with studded jewelery or faux-hawk coifs.  Dramatic dark smokey eyes and deep berry lips were also favored on the red carpet.  But the real stars of the red carpet were the women who really went for it.  Anne Hathaway went full blown blonde, SJP sported an exquisite mohawk headpiece by Philip Treacy, and Madonna said, “to hell with pants!” in Givenchy.  Rooney Mara, Nina Dobrev, and Minka Kelly were the perfect mesh of modern and punk embracing the look in sexy lace and smoldering makeup.  While Blake Lively, Taylor Swift, and Amanda Seyfried were stunning, they veered to the side of safe.  Which can’t be said for some like Coco in Emanuel Ungaro, a tie dyed Elle Fanning, and a seemingly confused Olsen twin.  And I’m left wondering if some of these ladies didn’t get the memo or are just party poopers who simply ignored the theme altogether.

So, who got punk and who got punk’d?

Why Did You Wear That: My Awards Show Has a First Name…

By |February 24th, 2013|Celebrity Style, Red Carpet Recap, Why Did You Wear That?|

And the Winners Are:

Stacy Kiebler in Naeem Khan, Kerry Washington in Miu Miu, Naomi Watts Armani Prive

I actually went back and forth a couple of times before finally deciding on my best dressed for this year’s Oscar Awards.  All season long, I’ve been asking the ladies of Hollywood to “bring it” and in the words of a real cinematic gem, Bring It On, “It’s already been broughten!”  So, I guess it’s safe to say that the starlets of the big screen were just keeping their heavy artillery under wraps until tonight.  Much like their careers, no one wants to peak too early.  While I did go ahead and pick my top three ensembles, there are so many more that deserve a bit of airtime.  After all, it’s just an honor to be nominated, right?  Stacy Kiebler wowed in a dress shinier than beau, George Clooney’s, beard, Kerry Washionton popped in a perfect coral red, and Naomi Watts shined in an all over sequin asymmetrical frock.  Blues were still in heavy rotation, but a new pastel trend emerged as a favorite.  Thankfully, far less black was worn than at previous award shows, but when it was, the dresses were embellished so beautifully that the gowns were anything but basic.  And as always, there was plenty of shimmer to light up the red carpet.

We all had high hopes for Jennifer Anniston’s return to the red carpet, but I was less than impressed with a lackluster version of Jennifer Lawrence’s Golden Globes gown and typical Rachel blowout.  Anne Hathaway may have won big with Le Mis, but her pink Prada was ill fitting and nearly as awkward as her red carpet interviews.  I’m not sure why Olivia Munn was even there (was Magic Mike nominated?), but she and her mess of a dress would have been better off staying at home.

White Up the Night:

Charlize Theron in Christian Dior, Zoe Saldana in Alexis Mabille, Jennifer Lawrence in Christian Dior

Fifty Shades of Pastel:
