Why Did You Wear That: The Essentials

By |July 22nd, 2010|Why Did You Wear That?|

As I’m getting older (and older… and older…) I have come to realize that what they say about “quality over quantity” is oh-so-very true. During my last closet clean out, I noticed that I had a ton of garbage and duplicate garbage that when added together could have amounted to one really nice piece as opposed to several shitty pieces. Just like friends, boyfriends, and old receipts… sometimes you’ve got to clean out the old, to make room for the new.

Black Pants: You may think of these as boring and what waitresses/caterers wear, but they are a fool proof option for dressing up, dressing sexy, or dressing for work. They can carry you from summer to winter seamlessly. Get a pair that fits you well or have them tailored to get them just right.

White Blouse: There is nothing more classic than a clean white shirt. A simple white blouse can be worn in so many different ways and can be incredibly alluring when styled correctly.

Cashmere Sweater: An absolute must for any girl on the go. Stashing your lightweight cardi somewhere handy can take you from day to night.

Pencil Skirt: I don’t think anyone would argue that there’s nothing sexier than a woman in a well fit pencil skirt and heels. This is an absolute necessity and any chic girl’s closet.

Classic Pumps: Even if they hurt a little, a classic pair of black pumps can be worn with just about anything (including your black pants or pencil skirt).

Everyday Bag: This is basically your day to day carry on luggage. You need to carry everything from your wallet, to your change of shoes, to your portfolio. Needs to be durable and preferably have a lot of pockets to stash your goodies and keep you organized.

Clutch: All it needs to hold is your credit cards, ID, cash, cellphone, keys, lipgloss and camera- all while being cute.

Trench: A classic trench is a staple for brisk fall days and chilly spring nights.

Real People, Real Style: Doing it Wright

By |July 20th, 2009|Real People Real Style|

jennifer wrightThis stunner  must be good at her job. In this outfit, she is “marketing” all of her best assets.

Name:  Jennifer Wright

Wearing:  Dress by H&M, Bebe shoes

Occupation:   Account Executive at Kaiser Marketing

Hometown:  Wheeling, West Virginia

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and your bag was only big enough for 3 items, what would they be?

  • iPhone, so I can tweet to come save me.
  • Peanut Butter- makes everything taste delicious since I’ll probably have to eat a couple bugs.
  • A book on how to make rafts out of sand so I can float home.

Favorite beauty product: Karen Scott capillary concealer.

Style icon:  I don’t really have one.  I like the way Rachel Bilson dresses…. I’ll guess I’ll embrace that one.
This summer I can’t wait to wear:  My new stripper bikini from a random store in Hollywood.  Yes, I’m serious.  I really love it.

Style tip for all the fashion degenerates:  Don’t try so hard to be “different.”  You just look like everyone else trying to be different… be yourself!

Best Splurge (it was worth every penny):  My T3 Featherweight Hair Dryer Tourmaline Professional Ceramic Ionic Hair Dryer – I swear by it, my hair should be falling out at this point… but it’s still going strong!

Trend you’d like to see die:  MC hammer pants aren’t hot unless you have a 4 foot crotch.

Currently coveting:  The perfect black clutch.  Potentially Tory Burtch’s Reva Clutch? Not 100% though…any ideas?

Fun fact:  I really love the city of Pittsburgh.  It is the most amazing place in the world!  City of Champs!

Biggest personal fashion flop:  WHY DID I think it was okay to wear belly shirts in 2005?

Well, Jen, we’ll forgive you for the crop tops cause it looks like since then, you’ve been doing all the “Wright” things.

Why Did You Wear That: Get Sprung- Spring Did.

By |March 26th, 2009|Why Did You Wear That?|

Spring is officially here, so it’s time to overhaul your closets.  Time to toss the sweaters and leggings (thank god) and get ready to show some skin.  It’s time to stimulate our economy (it’s called being proactive).  So what if Obama’s trying to take back everyone’s bonuses?  Might as well look cute in the poorhouse.

  • Leather jacket- Wear it with jeans and a tank or over a long maxi dress. Works with both and gives you an easy “I didn’t try too hard” look. (Don’t worry, if you’re feeling timid, you don’t have to go with black. Try a shade of grey or tan).

  • Body Con dress- What have you been going to the gym for?  Shed off those extra layers and show off your toned bod.

Why Did You Wear That: Are belts men’s handbags?

By |December 2nd, 2008|Somethin for the fellas, Why Did You Wear That?|

Last night we went to Malini Murjani’s (www.malinim.com) trunkshow at Norwood. She designs really beautiful exotic handbags as well as exquisite belts.

One of my very dear guy friends had his heart set on a really fantastic leather belt with one of a kind buckle and amazing metal details. The belt was a little too short for him, but he was really desperate for this belt.

I started to wonder… since guys really don’t have the opportunity to accessorize like girls, are belts their equivalent?

A pretty much standard outfit for a stylish man in New York City consists of jeans (ideally dark and straight leg), button down, blazer, and nice shoes. This really doesn’t leave them a lot of room to express themselves. My handsome (and single, ladies) friend was essentially wearing just that. God love him, he was wearing distressed True Religions though, which he explained was because he was trying to add a little something different to his otherwise standard outfit. (I then made him promise that we would burn these jeans this weekend, which he agreed to).

So that’s when I realized, belts are men’s handbags.
