Monday Mashup: Fruitastic Fail
Written by: WhyDid YouWearThat | Monday Mashup

Why yes, Katy Perry, you do look a whole lot like this pink haired plastic playtoy that so many of us lovingly called, Strawberry Shortcake.  And while she was my hero when I was no taller than a step stool, I’m not sure that as a grown woman you want to share much in common with this fruity femme… except for say, her strawberry scented coif.

Katy, are you having a quarter life crisis?  Or is Russell into some freaky fetish role playing thing?  The only thing I am certain of is that you look absolutely ridiculous… but let’s see what the WhyDid’ers have to say about your fruity follicles:

Now that’s not berry nice.

Would You Wednesday: Color Me Beautiful
Written by: WhyDid YouWearThat | Beauty Buzz,Would You Wednesday

Lately, A-List ladies have been trading in conventionally colored coifs for wild shades that you’d normally only see on Rainbow Brite and My Little Pony.  Two of the latest to try this trend on their tresses are Katy Perry (who has gone through several shades of pink) and Lauren Conrad (with a pale ombre peach).  While they’ve been making a splash with their colorful new ‘do’s, they aren’t the first to go  ROYGBIV on us.

Oh yes, it seems that celebrities have run the gamut on high impact hairdo’s.  But what I really want to know is whether or not this hairdo is actually a hairDON’T.  I’m all for self expression and trying out the newest in beauty… but looking like a Skittle probably isn’t in the cards for me.  I don’t think my hairbrush wants to taste the rainbow.  Call me a traditionalist, but I think I’ll stick to haircolors commonly occurring in nature.  What do you think?

Now I’m craving Starburst. Great.

Why I Can’t Sit Through the VMA’s
Written by: WhyDid YouWearThat | Red Carpet Recap

20110828-091401.jpg

Oh sweet heaven above. Perhaps I’m just getting old, but I tuned into the MTV VMA pre-show because you know I love to blog about the oh so crazy fashion on the red carpet. However, after witnessing Justin Bieber arrive with a snake named “Johnson” followed by Nicki Minaj in another one of Lady Gaga’s rejected costumes, I couldn’t take much more. Then Katy Perry showed up with pink hair and Asian garb- complete with parasol- and I’d had enough. I needed to make a cocktail if I was going to attempt to sit through this shit storm. (Irene who?)

When I returned with a Bloody Mary, there was a very strange man performing “You And I.” Was I drunk on vodka fumes alone? Oh, it’s just Gaga.

You know who’s not drunk? Beyonce.

Now I’m gonna go finish my cocktail and if I have it in me will continue with red carpet commentary.

Weekend Playlist: Girls Just Wanna Have Fun
Written by: WhyDid YouWearThat | Weekend Playlist

Every girl loves an official “girls night out” but my very favorite part of these nights is what happens before you even step stillettoed foot out the front door.  The best part of a girls night out is primping in the mirror, sipping on cocktails, and possibly a good bit of girl talk.  Perhaps I’m showing my age, but I almost enjoy a “girls night in” more than out… Either way, having a perfect playlist to kick off the night is crucial.

Cheers!

Why Don’t You Do What You Love?
Written by: WhyDid YouWearThat | WhyDid Wisdom

Recently, I finished a really great book called The Paris Wife (by Paula McLain).  And while you probably think this is going to be a painfully dull book review, it’s not… although if you’re looking for a great end of summer read, I certainly suggest that one.  Without digressing too far, the book is basically written from the point of view of Ernest Hemingway’s first wife, Hadley Richardson.  It chronicles the early years in Paris where he penned one of his more notable novels (though there are many), The Sun Also Rises.  During the 1920′s,  those considered to be “interesting” were living in Paris.  Some hypothesize it had something to do with the exchange rate, but others insist that this was a place where writers and artists alike could be creative.

After finishing this book, it became very clear to me that things have certainly changed since then.  Some for the better, but one thing very much for the worst.  While as a society, we’ve evolved in terms of technology and modern conveniences but, we’ve managed to slip backwards in regards to the arts.  Sure, there are people who call themselves “artists”, but it seems to me that most people doing whatever it is that they do, are doing it for the money rather than the actual passion that should propel the craft and that comes across in the final product.

Instead of making something truly authentic, people make what will appeal to the masses.  They create what will be considered commercially acceptable and will bring in the most cash.  They’d rather sell records and hit sales levels than break ground and be true to his or her talent.  Sure, I like to bust a move along to a poppy Katy Perry tune, but can we really call that art?  What happened to real bands that play real instruments and don’t rely so heavily on autotune?  When’s the last time you saw a painting by someone currently living that truly moved you?  Banksy is cool, but is graffiti really comparable to canvas?

When I talk to friends, it seems we are all stuck somewhere in between doing what we love and doing what will pay the rent/mortgage/Louboutins.  I feel quite certain that this has a lot to do with why there is a disappearance of people dedicated to doing what they love.  It appears our generation has no soul.  We’re driven by money and “stuff.”  I’m not saying that we all need to be a bunch of emo hipsters, but I do think it wouldn’t hurt to “gut check” from time to time to make sure we’re all living lives that feel authentic.

Don’t do it for the fame.  The money.  The glory.

WhyDid
