Why Did You Wear That: Stopping Short

By |April 3rd, 2012|Why Did You Wear That?|

celebrities crop topsThis past weekend, three of Tinsletown’s loveliest ladies were all seen sporting a little bit of bare midriff while walking the red (err… orange?) carpet.  This bit of belly is different from the crop tops of a couple summers past.  It’s not so much belly button as it is rib cage.  It’s the teeniest little peek-a-boo of skin that is both sexy and playful.  It’s less Christina Aguilera Genie in a Bottle and a bit more Gidget Goes Hawaiian.  And for anyone who was ever a bit self conscious about showing some torso, don’t worry.  This is much more wearable and will keep that fearsome FUPA under wraps.

Dolce & Gabbana Chili Pepper Print Cotton Bustier, $1000, 5. MinkPink Support Group Bustier, $35, 6. Mara Hoffman Embroidered Bustier Top, $207, 7. Topshop Petite Cutout Swan Bralet, $52, 8. Smith Denim Bustier, $80, 9. Free People Kiki Top, $78, 10. SO Dot Convertible Mini Bustier, $14.99

While some are referring to these as “bralettes” that’s not quite the right term.  (Did I not already school you in bralettes?).  I would consider these to be cropped bustier tops.  You’ll have much more luck when searching using those terms.  The trick to this look is pairing your teeny top with a high waisted skirt or slacks.  That way your outfit will read “le petite coquette” rather than “big dirty whore.”

Why Did You Wear That: To the Max

By |March 26th, 2012|Look for Less, Why Did You Wear That?|

spring 2012 maxi dressesThe maxi dress is nothing new, but that’s okay.  It’s still a closet and transitional season must have.  A maxi is great for running errands in a simple pair of flat sandals and tote or can be dressed up with heels and sparkly jewels.  Maxi dresses are a win for all parties involved.  It’s like getting to wear your pajamas all day long and no one can really say anything cause you look so stunning and you never run the risk of exposing your “Britney.”  Striped, solid, floral, tribal… you really can’t go wrong.  Check out how these chic starlets styled their maxis and re-create the look yourself for that oh-so-effortless maxed out look.

Why Did You Wear That: What a SAG

By |January 30th, 2012|Monday Mashup, Red Carpet Recap, Why Did You Wear That?|

To be honest… I was almost so uninspired that I didn’t even bother with a Red Carpet Recap for this year’s SAG Awards.  While the dresses are a bit better than when they started this award season with the People’s Choice Awards, I’m still waiting to be wowed.  Having just finished up the Paris couture shows, one would think there would have been a little bit more drama on the red carpet… On a positive note, there was nothing this time that truly offended me either… that much.  As we all know, there are only so many designers to go around, so I will now present you with the good, the bad and the debatable (where you’ll be the judge of who wore which designer best).

The Good:

Rose Byrne in Elie Saab, Kyra Sedgewick in Emilio Pucci, Emily Blunt in Oscar de la Renta, Regina King in Alberta Ferretti

The Bad:

Kaley Cuoco in Romona Keveza, Gretchen Mol in L’wren Scott, Kristen Wiig in Balenciaga, Zoe Saldana in Givenchy

The Debatable:

Angelina Jolie and Ashlee Simpson in Jenny Packham

Viola Davis and Sofia Vergara in Marchesa

Julie Bowen and Sarah Hyland in Temperley

Jessica Chastain and Julianna Margulies in Calvin Klein

Alright ladies, it’s time to really step it up.  I can’t sit through another boring awards ceremony if you’re not willing to wear something wow-worthy.  I will pretend it didn’t even happen next time.  Just remember what Rooney’s dad said… the Oscar’s are your Superbowl.

 Hut, set, hike.

Monday Mashup: MET Madness

By |May 3rd, 2011|Monday Mashup, Red Carpet Recap|

The gorgeous and well groomed came out to strut their stuff down the red carpet for the MET Ball this evening.  Where most red carpets are a bit of a bore, the Costume Gala always proves to be  more interesting seeing as it is thrown by the fashion elite (you don’t see Anna Wintour at the Grammy’s).  Each year, the gala is themed and this year was “Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty.”  Talk about one hell of a week for McQueen creative director, Sarah Burton.  A royal wedding followed by the year’s biggest fashion fete.

Above Tory Burch and Taylor Swift (in J. Mendel) slipped into their red carpet best and while both look absolutely beautiful (thanks for ditching that side swept ‘do, Taylor!) they look uncomfortably similar.  These dresses look like they could have been cut from the same cloth (oh yes, pun intended).

Tory and Taylor weren’t the only lookalikes this evening.  Quite a few starlets, and style icons were seen wearing similar get ups.

Ginnifer Goodwin in custom Top Shop, Barbara Walters

Too easy.

Rosie Huntington Whiteley in Burberry, Brooklyn Decker in Michael Kors

Two blonde supermodels, one color. I love Rosie Huntington Whitely.  She’s absolutely beautiful and I do love Brooklyn’s dress.  I just wish they could have swapped outfits.

Kate Hudson in Stella McCartney, Jessica Alba in Ralph Lauren Collection

No, this is not season 4 of Teen Mom Goes to Prom.  These are just two very pregnant actresses dressed in prom gowns for the gala.

Dakota Fanning in Valentino, Fergie in Marchesa

Speaking of teens… why is Fergie dressed in the same outfit as seventeen year old Dakota Fanning (who is very much age appropriately dressed)?

Sarah Jessica Parker in Alexander McQueen, Renee Zellweger in Carolina Herrera, Gwyneth Paltrow in Stella McCartney

Seems that slinky metallics were all the rage for the over 40 set.  I can’t help but think these dresses look awfully similar to Anne Hathaway at the Golden Globes

Freida Pinto in Chanel, Janelle Monae, Anna Dello Russo in Alexander McQueen and egg hat

Three perfect examples of why women should stick to womenswear and stay away from menswear.

Chrissy Teigen in Chris March, Beyonce in Emilio Pucci, Lucy Liu in Vionnet, Christina Hendricks in Carolina Herrera, Demi Moore in Prabal Gurung, Kirsten Dunst in Chanel

These six sexy black widows actually all ended up on my worst dressed list… just mere coincidence that they’re all in black.  Preparing for their fashion funeral perhaps?

Gisele Bunchden in Alexander McQueen, Dianna Agron in Michael Kors, Saorise Ronan in Rodarte, Kristen Stewart in Proenza Schouler, Emily Browning in Marc Jacobs

I’ve organized these ladies in red from “red hot” to “red not even kind of a little bit. uh uh.”

Diane Kruger in Jason Wu, Christina Ricci in Zac Posen, Bar Rafaeli, Ashley Greene in Donna Karan, Lily Aldridge in Ralph Lauren Collection, Leelee Sobieski in Vionnet

These six stunners got their red carpet looks right.  They are each wearing one of the above trends or themes that were so popular at this year’s MET, but they got it right rather than oh so wrong. These beauties were able to separate themselves from the savages.

Why Did You Wear That: Put Some Spring in Your Step

By |April 5th, 2011|Why Did You Wear That?|

Speaking of putting your foot in your mouth… what’s better than salivating over strappy spring footwear?  While the warm weather is great… blah, blah, blah… the best part of spring is investing in fabulous new shoes and heading in for an intensive pedicure (two of my greatest pleasures in life).  I always buy a couple pairs of shoes that I wear the crap out of all spring/summer long.  Why not take a gander at these beauties and start thinking about what shoes you will fill your closet with:

1. Emilio Pucci Suede Multi-Strap Platform Sandals, $890, 2. Alexandre Birman Ankle-Wrap Canvas Sandals, $475, 3. Theodora and Callum Biarritz Printed Linen Wedge Sandals, $395,  4. Miu Miu Canvas Platform Mules, $445, 5. Christopher Kane Two Tone Leather Platform Sandals, $650, 6. Jimmy Choo Vivienne Mixed Media Platform Sandals, $1,695, 7. Yves Saint Laurent Venice Leather Sculpted Wedge Sandals, $1,195, 8. Miu Miu Wooden Block Heel Sandals, $450, 9. Miu Miu Suede Multi-Strap Sandals, $595, 10. Brian Atwood Claudette Studded Suede Sandals, $775

Toodles, toots.
