Gift Guide: Fellas, Make Your Lady Happy This Holiday

By |December 8th, 2008|Gift Guide, Somethin for the fellas|

It can be very stressful trying to come up with a thoughtful and useful gift for your honey. So below I have outlined some Do’s and Don’ts of holiday shopping in order to keep you out of the dog house.

What she absolutely does NOT want:

  • Don’t bother trying to buy her clothes. Unless you have (successfully) done this in the past, I would skip it. Plus, you don’t want to have the awkward moment of buying a size 8 when she’s really a size 4. Never buy her a sweater. This is what her Aunt Helen is for.
  • Nix the gift certificates. I know it sounds good in theory and kind of a no fail option, but you are wrong. Gift certificates are completely thoughtless and lazy and trust me, she’ll recognize that. Put in the leg work and get her a real gift.
  • Perfume is way too personal for you to be picking out for her. That’s something she should buy on her own. I also think it is kind of cheesy and trite.
  • Lingerie is iffy. I personally love lingerie, but it is essentially a selfish gift, no? Save it for Valentine’s Day. If you do opt for lingerie, be sure that it’s La Perla or Myla and not Victoria’s Secret. This is no time to be stingy.
  • Jewelry is tricky. There is only one surefire option in jewelry, diamonds. Unless you are very familiar with her style or willing to dish out the $$ for diamonds, I’d hold off. I have a personal horror story about jewelry on Christmas. Picture this: your boyfriend calls you from the Diamond District and tells you how he is the most amazing boyfriend in the world. You are now giddy with excitement (thinking you are finally getting those diamond studs). He shows up with Swarvoski crystals. And ugly ones at that.
  • Any type of kitchen appliance. Enough said.
  • Pajamas. Could you be any less sexy?

Some better options:

In all honesty, my favorite part of any gift is the card. Believe it or not, I do have a soft side. The thought that goes into your gift is far more meaningful than what you actually buy her. If she throws a tantrum or diva fit… maybe it’s time to re-evaluate…

Any of you ladies reading, email me your most horrific holiday gift stories and I will post the best ones! whydidyouwearthat@whydid.com

Why Did You Wear That: See Ya Later, 2008!

By |December 6th, 2008|Why Did You Wear That?|

So, it is now December. I can hardly believe it. This year has flown by!

Anyway, this means that you are starting (or if you’re an overachiever, have already started/finished) planning for your New Year’s Eve soiree. Obviously, my favorite part of any holiday, or party, or basically any occassion to dress up, is getting totally decked out. So whether you’ll be in NYC, South Beach, or jet-setting off to St. Bart’s, I’ve come up with some festive dress ideas for your very special evening. Careful with the champagne…

NEW YORK CITY

Oh, New York. I have spent a few New Year’s here, myself.  While New Yorkers tend to be elegantly understated, it is still fun to sparkle and stand out. (Trust me, I was once the only one in the room in a cocktail dress, loved it). Go with a little bit of subtle glam and comfortable (but still cute) shoes because after all, this is the city that never sleeps!

Twelfth Street by Cynthia Vincent, $324. Available at www.shopbop.com

Insight, Field of Diamonds dress, $90. Available at www.urbanoutfitters.com

Why Did You Wear That: Miami, What are YOU wearing?

By |December 5th, 2008|Why Did You Wear That?|

I think I may have hit the mother load. I love Miami, but seriously, I am disturbed by some of the attire I saw from these Miami party pictures. Are there a lack of mirrors there? I would be more than happy to donate personally if that’s what the problem is.

Do you kind of wonder what happened here? On one hand, I do give the young lady on the left some credit for not falling into the trap of “jeans and varied black slutty top,” however, did it HAVE to be a tie dyed t-shirt and annoying headband thing (what is with that anyway?).

Nothing annoys me more than guys like this. I mean, he might be a perfectly nice guy and save kittens for a living, but I guarantee if he walked up to me in a bar I would run the other way. I don’t even know him and I don’t like him. I know you are not John Gotti, so please stop with the lame ganster hat, thanks. (more…)

Why Did You Wear That: Croc of…

By |December 4th, 2008|Why Did You Wear That?|

So, I’m sure you’ve all heard of Crocs. That’s unfortunate and I’m sorry. For some odd reason, these things caught on fire and for the life of me I can not understand the appeal. What? Do they give you magical powers or something? There has GOT to be a reason that people subject themselves to looking like students of the local clown college.

I was under the impression these were originally for women who garden.  So, I went on their website to try and understand where these things spawned from, but I still don’t get it. And even if they were originally intended for “boating” why are people wearing these anywhere other than their schooners?

What I REALLY want to know is who the hell is wearing these? Seriously, who? I’m lucky enough to live in New York where as bad as some of the fashion is here and there, no one is falling for this whole “Crocs” thing. (Phew!)

There is absolutely nothing sexy about these. Not even Adriana Lima naked wearing Crocs is sexy (so maybe that’s pushing it- she’s hot, but you get the point).

EXHIBIT A:

Apparently, now you can get your Crocs with fur. These are called “Mammoth”. As in the size of the mistake you’re making by wearing these. Okay, so your feet are cold… then put on boots. Who is going to wear, not only backless shoes, but backless shoes with HOLES in them when their feet are cold??

EXHIBIT B:

Honestly, I don’t even have words for these. Okay, yes I do. What on God’s earth would you be wearing these for? The style description for the “Trailbreak” says to “get out and get it done.” I am not sure exactly what it is that you are going to “get done” by wearing these, but I can’t imagine it includes any of the following: getting a date, making friends, or looking cool.

EXHIBIT C:

Okay, so now I’m just baffled. Crocs is really crossing the line here with me. I’m actually starting to take it personally. So, you say that you are a functional shoe. Well, we all know that heels are not functional. They are supposed to be sexy. Period. They do not need to be functional and honestly, they don’t even need to be comfortable. They just need to look good. No one is ever going to run a marathon in heels, or garden in heels, or ride on their schooner in heels (well, actually, I probably would). So just cut the crap. You’re not fooling anyone, Crocs.

EXHIBIT D:

Oh, so now you’re subjecting your children to these? Now that’s just mean. Do you WANT them to get beaten up on the playground? Naming them Apple and Phinneus wasn’t bad enough??

In conclusion, I think these things are wretched (in case you couldn’t tell).  If you can give me a legitimately good reason why you would put these shoes on, I’ll buy you a pair. But good luck convincing me why ANYONE should ever wear flotation devices as shoes.

Why Did You Wear That: What did YOU do last night?

By |December 3rd, 2008|Why Did You Wear That?|

Another edition of “Don’t Drink and Dress” though I kind of feel like this one is more like, “Don’t Dress and then Drink.”

Staying true to my roots, some commentary on these horrific fashion catastrophes. (My apolgies in advance to the drummers).

I’m not sure if this party was “jungle” themed, but these prints are too big and too difficult. They essentially make the girls look bigger than they are. Wouldn’t be easy for anyone to pull off. (more…)
