Why Did You Date Him: … Just Right!

By |July 7th, 2010|Why Did You Date Him?|

goldilocks-and-the-three-bears-photo-album-460

Not so long ago I wrote about not being able to have it all in regards to footwear, but I’m starting to wonder if this also carries over into your love life. Since my last serious relationship I have dated a bit here and there but have not been able to find someone who I would even consider being totally committed to. I’ve met some really great and interesting men, but in each case, they seemed to be missing something.

This became blatantly clear to me recently when I was seeing a few guys at once (that’s right, fellas, ladies can juggle too). Each of the gentlemen that I was seeing possessed something that interested me, but lacked in other areas. Suddenly I felt like Goldilocks and the three dudes.

The first guy was incredibly good looking (like so good looking my friends gasped when they saw his photos), sweet, and funny. On paper and in theory, he is most certainly someone I should have wanted to nest with. I trusted him, he was respectful of me, and most importantly, wanted to settle down- with me.  So what was the problem?  I did not ever feel the urge to snuggle up next to him let alone rip his clothes off.  Bizarre, right? How in the world was I going to have a long term relationship with someone who I did not feel physically connected to? Sexy times seem to dwindle as time goes on, so where would this leave us six months from now when we were starting at zero? Negative 400? Too cold.

With guy number two I suffered the exact opposite problem.  I didn’t want to do anything but rip his clothes off.  He lived about 2700 miles away on the other side of the country, so when I actually got to see him it was on. However, when he would start talking to me, all I wanted him to do was shut up and leave. As sexy as our sexy times were and as physically attracted to him as I was, there is a lot more that goes into a relationship than a good ol’ fashion pants of dance off. Bad things happen in life and I need a partner, not a plaything. Too hot.

And my last little fellow, was something extra special.  He had something that neither of the first two had.  He got inside my head (which is no easy feat, my friends).  I actually never even realized what was happening because our relationship did not start in a “dating” scenario. We spent a lot of time talking and getting to know one another without much (read: any) physical interaction. He understood me and my twisted sense of humor and there was not a day that passed where he didn’t make me cry with laughter. The only thing that held me back was that he was not what I had pictured when my Cinderella fairytale played out in my head. Somehow that didn’t seem to matter. The connection I had with him mentally was much stronger than any of the physical connections from my past. Just right.

So what’s a girl to do? In a perfect world, I would be able to combine all three into the perfect specimen. Unfortunately, this is no perfect world and I don’t get to write my own script. And really? Is there such a thing as a “perfect man?” Probably not. So which is the most important? Looks? Chemistry? Connection? Can the physical connection grow as the mental connection increases? Is giving up one of the three settling or being savvy? Would waiting out for the trifecta be selfish or smart? Can a girl really have it all?

Sigh. Looks like I’ll be testing out more porridge til I have the answer.

Why Did You Wear That: Let It All Hang Out

By |July 6th, 2010|Personal Style, Why Did You Wear That?|

V300349

As mentioned, one of my favorite Spring trends was the presence of underwear peaking out of outerwear. We spend a lot of money on fine unmentionables and they barely get to see the light of day. (And in my case, only sweet, sweet Smitty gets to see them). Sometimes you gotta give your tittays a rest and a pretty wireless lace bra is just the way to do it. Some people call them “weekend bras” or “sleep bras,” I just call them “hot.” My favorite way to wear one? Peaking out of a slinky, slouchy tank, of course.

My mom is somewhere smacking her hand to her forehead. She spent years trying to get me to hide my bra straps, but alas, I’m now encouraging you all to let em hang, let em swang.

Why Did You Wear That: American Woman

One of my favorite things in the world is a great bikini. Thankfully, we live in a country where it is totally acceptable to strut your stuff poolside in the teeniest of bikinis. God bless, America! So in celebration of one of the many freedoms we have in our fine country I have collected a few patriotic swimsuits that do not involve an American flag and will prevent you from looking like you need a Natty Lite and bandana:

Picture 1Sea Folly Viva mini tube, $71 and side tie bottom $58

The List Volume IX

By |July 2nd, 2010|The List|

Tantrum

This list should be twenty rather than ten seeing as I went MIA last week. However, I have decided to keep it short and to the point. (You’re welcome).

  1. Dressing room floors. Band-aids and stray hairs galore. I can’t.
  2. Lady Gaga. I’ve had about enough of her for a little while.
  3. These:IMG_0897Now you’re just abusing the right to dress. (Thanks to Ryan Nickulas for sending along this little sweet treat).
  4. Screaming children on five hour flights. Control your offspring. Thanks.
  5. Taking your shoes off at airport security. There’s gotta be another way.
  6. And these:IMG00066-20100702-1539Yep, an entire wall of “jean” leggings. I believe they are calling these “jeggings.”
  7. Dreadlocks on white people. I’m talking to you, Crystal Bowersox. CrystalBowersox
  8. People who don’t refill the Brita/Pur/whichever pitcher. I’m thirsty too, jackass.
  9. Morning breath.
  10. Promoter text messages. I’m damn near forty. Please stop. I can’t sit through a din with 19 year old models anymore.

Until next week… Happy Fourth.

Country Roads

By |July 1st, 2010|Uncategorized|

home sweet home

What does one do after having a mini meltdown? Go home, of course. No one can nurse a wounded heart and tired soul like Mom and a little good ol’ fashion TLC. So, I went ahead and packed my things and headed to where I call home, Wheeling, West Virginia.

I took it as a good sign when my Dictionary Word of the Day app was, “hegira: noun 1. A journey to a more desirable or congenial place.”  I must have been drunk when I booked my flight seeing as how I’d managed to book a flight with a layover. (It should only take an hour to get from NY to Pittsburgh- I stretched it into three). Upon arrival at Pittsburgh International, I rushed to the bathroom with one too many things in my hands and managed to drop my beloved Blackberry into the toilet. Good work, WhyDid.

This wasn’t the first time I had dropped my phone into some type of body of water so I had high hopes that it would dry out and function after a good session under the blowdryer. Unfortunately, there must be something in the water in Pburgh. No such luck. I was later informed that putting your wet phone in a bag of rice is known to soak out the moisture and get it back up and running. Again, no such luck.

After ordering another phone, I had to come to terms with the fact that I was completely disconnected. Not to mention, my mom’s computer is my computer from college (it’s basically a tin can with wires) and she does not have wireless. The only thing my MacBook Air was good for was iTunes dance parties in the kitchen with mom.

As miserable as this sounds, it actually forced me to focus on having a wholesome good time with my mom. I never talk to her as much as I should or talk to her like the friend that she has become. Not having constant access to BBM, Facebook, Twitter, and Foursquare gave me time to appreciate just being quiet and getting back to the basics like simple conversation and … gasp… being quiet.

While home I realized that there were so many simple pleasures that I had overlooked while living the life in NYC- hula hooping, dance parties, lightning bugs, reading, running, getting to know my mom. I spent a week, which never seems long enough, just being myself. There was no need to put on a show and I felt so incredibly relaxed. I understand that I’m incredibly blessed to have a family like mine and if you have something even remotely close, I suggest you do the same. Sometimes you just need to reconnect with your roots in order to move forward in whatever busy city you are living in.
