Why Did You Wear That: Precious Cargo

By |August 24th, 2010|Why Did You Wear That?|

When I have to put on pants, I don’t often put on anything but 7 For All Mankind Gweneveres. Sometimes, a girl has got to switch things up a little (who doesn’t like a little variety?). I remember while working at my first job for a clothing line, we attempted to bring back the skinny cargo pant. It didn’t quite catch on. Lo and behold, five years later… ta-da! The skinny cargo!

Pair your skinny cargos with a plain white t or a yummy cashmere v-neck and heels for a transitional fall look.

Don’t forget your packing peanuts. Safe travels.

WhyDid Wisdom: Just Breathe

By |August 24th, 2010|Beauty Buzz, WhyDid Wisdom|

Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_391339

With our crazy social schedules and busy lives, sometimes we forget to do something very, very important: Breathe. Not only do I mean this literally, but also quite figuratively.

Go commando: This may sound kind of gross, but it’s one of those necessities. It is good to sleep in the buff sometimes or with a nighty only. Your little girl down below needs fresh air too. Wearing tight clothing and thong underwear can cause discomfort and even bacterial infections. If you’re feeling a little too modest going commando, swap out your normal panties for a pair of cotton bikinis.

Show me some skin: Bad skin is cyclical. We get a breakout and feel the need to cover it up. By covering it up, we clog our skin… causing more breakouts. During the week, why not give your skin a break? Wash, moisturize, add a little cheek stain, mascara, and lip gloss and let that beautiful skin show.

Stop wining: Gosh, who doesn’t love a good glass of wine? Well, apparently the trick to really enjoying a great glass of wine is letting it breath. By allowing your wine to mingle with the air, the aroma will grow stronger and the flavors will become more obvious. There’s more to a great glass of wine than just uncorking the bottle.

Breathing room: At times, we can have emotional overload. Not all relationships are perfect. So there are times when instead of fighting it out, it’s best to give it some space and let it air out before delving back in. A little time away often does the trick.

I can see it in your eyes: If you are like the majority of the population and wear contact lenses, you also probably are cramping your eyeballs’ style. Every once in a while (read: two times a week) you should opt for your spectacles in order to give your peepers a rest.

This little piggy went home: Just like your eyes, sometimes your feet need a rest as well. Giving your tootsies a little breathing room can prevent any sort of stench or fungal diseases. Swap out your sneaks or your closed toe shoes for something with a bit of air.

Just breathe.

Why Did You Eat That: Louie Louie

By |August 23rd, 2010|Los Angeles, Why Did You Eat That?|

060310-167.

Between work all week and apartment hunting on the weekends, I’ve been spending 89% of my time in downtown Los Angeles (DTLA). A lot of people would probably frown upon my last statement seeing as downtown is still considered to be “up and coming.”  Granted DTLA certainly isn’t as tacky trendy as West Hollywood or as squeaky clean as Beverly Hills, but it’s the only place in Los Angeles that actually resembles a city. Yes, there are some creepy people roaming the streets over here (Um, I’m from New York, kiddos. Bums don’t scare me!) and they could certainly use another Starbucks or Coffee Bean, but there is something sexy about not choosing the obvious. Not to mention the loft spaces you can get here are unrivaled anywhere else in the city.

Anyway, a girl’s gotta eat, right? After a long day at the office, we decided to grab dinner (which may or may not have included cocktails) in the neighborhood. Several people suggested a little place called Bottega Louie. So, off we went.

l-2

Upon arrival, I was pleasantly surprised (and impressed). Bottega Louie functions as both a restaurant as well as cafe/bakery with some of the most exquisite pastries and desserts I’ve ever seen. The space is large and white. After checking in with the host at the table separating the bakery from the restaurant, we hung near the bar and took in the scene. The clientele was polished. I saw several suits (something I haven’t really seen since being in LA). I’m assuming these were the bankers who work downtown. The Fashion District and the Financial District in the same neighborhood. Finally a city that got it right!

As we were seated the host confirmed the last name, which at first I found peculiar until the waitress came by and addressed us by name. (It’s the little things). We were next to the pizza bar which smelled absolutely divine. Unfortunately, I’d already had pizza the day before, otherwise I would have eaten an entire pizza myself. I ordered the lasagna which turned out to be almost as good as mom’s (almost, mom, almost). My companion opted for the chicken carcioffi (chicken with artichoke hearts, capers, garlic, herbs and white wine sauce). I assume it must have been pretty good because he was done with it before I had the option of asking for a bite.

We were in a bit of a rush to get out of there, so we skipped dessert, but we did manage to snag some of the amazing and colorful French macaroons on our way out.  I would definitely like to go back and try their pizza along with a few hundred other things on the menu. It was almost like being back in New York.

Hey, for the food at Bottega Louie, I’d take the bums in downtown over the freaks in your hood any day!

Why Did You Wear That: No Second Chance at a First Impression

By |August 23rd, 2010|Why Did You Wear That?|

workingwomen

Seeing as my posts have gotten a little sparse in the past week, I bet you’re wondering what’s going on. Well, there comes a time in a young lady’s life where she has to suck it up and collect a grown up paycheck (and pay for her own Louboutins- sigh). So, that’s what WhyDid has gone and done. I will now be working normal hours like the majority of society. It was a super fun year long “vacation” but certainly time to reconvene with my working world women.

That being said, getting a job in this skank economy is no small feat. That’s why it is very important to be the best you can be when it comes to interview time. If you are lucky enough to actually score the interview (the hardest part of actually getting a job), then you’re going to have to make a serious first impression. There used to be wardrobe “guidelines” when it came to what was and was not appropriate interview attire, but I find them to be a bit dated.

Not all careers require the same look. If you were to walk into an interview at a major fashion house wearing a “suit” they would laugh you right out the front door. You have to keep in mind the type of office and industry you are entering. Don’t look too corporate for jobs that require creativity. Don’t show up to an accounting firm wearing a super short pencil skirt. Use common sense when it comes to preparing for your meeting. If you are unsure, it’s always best to skew to a little more conservative. After surveying the office, you will soon learn what the dress code is.

I remember what I wore to my interview at Henri Bendel three years ago. When I look back at that and compare it to the way I dressed for work there two and a half years later, it’s a complete 180.

A few things that you should ALWAYS do:

  • Have your fingers manicured. You don’t need to go crazy and have some obnoxious color/design, but be sure that your fingers are polished and pretty. Dirty or chipped nails never look good.
  • Do not load on the makeup. You want the interviewer to see you not eighteen pounds of makeup.
  • Try to keep your hair pulled back or at least out of your face. Not only will this make you appear well groomed, it will also prevent you from fidgeting with it during your interview.
  • In most instances, avoid sandals or super open toed footwear. This gives the impression of being casual and is typically not work appropriate. I like to always wear heels because it gives the impression that you are strong and powerful.
  • Be sure you are comfortable in what you are wearing. If you are uncomfortable in your outfit, it will come across during your interview. Simple is always best.

Below are some ideas for creative ways to still look professional. I’ve put them in order of most conservative to least (use your noggin when choosing a look for yourself).

Ugh. I forgot how tiring it is to work a 50+ hour workweek. They tell you it’s going to be a 9-6, but that’s never the case. Once I re-adjust to adulthood, the regularly scheduled WhyDid program will be back on track.

Why Did Wisdom: I Don’t Need This

By |August 21st, 2010|WhyDid Wisdom|

DermaTend_TV

We are constantly bombarded with things we don’t need. People are making millions and millions of dollars inventing items that we never knew we wanted until they put together an informercial and we were awake way too late one night. Now we have a closet full of As Seen On TV products.

Well, here are few more that you’re definitely going to want. Enjoy.

There is something concerning about the fact that this item seems to be targeted solely at big breasted women and children. How is it that you plan on explaining to your child what exactly is meant by “Tiddy”? Let me know how that conversation goes. And really, who is driving that aggressively that their seatbelt is causing such severe pain? Perhaps enrolling in driving school would be more helpful?

I mean, I don’t even know what to say about this. I felt uncomfortable even watching. This makes the Shake Weight seem tame. Please, if you DO buy this, send me the footage of your co-workers’ reactions as you girate beneath your desk. Thank you.

I think my favorite part of this one is when they go ahead and call in the 800lb grizzly bear. (They also make a note not to “try this at home.” Right… cause we all have access to grizzly bears). I mean, I know there are some sneaky people in offices who steal your food even after you’ve bedazzled your tupperware with your initials, but COME ON.

Happy Saturday.
