Friday Frocks: Heavenly Creations

By |February 18th, 2011|Friday Frocks|

I did not report on every last detail of New York Fashion Week- I like to leave that to the style obsessed.  My MO is to sit back, digest, filter out the garbage and focus on the fabulous.  Anyway, this week’s Friday Frocks is dedicated to all the beautiful creations that made their way down the runway this past week.  When I think of decadent, delicious frocks, I think of Vera, and Monique, and Oscar (oh my!).  I have to say, it’s kind of like someone read my mind, reached up to the heavens and pulled down these pretty pieces to fill me with girlish delight.  My very favorite colors are those of sunsets and evening skies, so I was beside myself to see all these beautiful frocks derived from that color palette.

Fall 2011 is shaping up to be a very stylish season.  I look forward to watching the starlets storm the red carpets in these beautiful frocks.

The List Volume XXXVIII

By |February 18th, 2011|The List|

I can’t lie, all week long I notice things that are completely and ridiculously obnoxious, but when it comes time to sit down and write “the list” I draw a complete blank.  Looks like I need an assistant.  Anyway, here’s what I came up with this week…

  1. People with SUV’s who don’t know how to drive them.  Seems like the worst drivers are always the ones with the biggest vehicles.
  2. Wasted time. Mine, yours, someone else’s.
  3. Leg 1 of Paris Hilton’s brothel themed 30th birthday parties.  Give it up already.
  4. The smell of burnt hair.
  5. Drama on Entourage. Why is he so annoying?  Why is he cast? Who owed him a favor?
  6. The sound of high heels that need reheeled.  Take care of that, would ya?
  7. When you smush your lipstick to the of the lid.  It’s never the same.
  8. Guys who are under the impression that they are, in fact, still in college.  Still in a fraternity, as a matter of fact.
  9. Luvs “Heavy Dooty” commercial.  Ew. Just ew.
  10. Speaking of creepy babies.

Why Did You Date Him: Can You Teach an Old Dog New Tricks?

By |February 17th, 2011|Why Did You Date Him?, WhyDid Wisdom|

Everyone knows how much I love my dog.  He literally taught me how to love.  I never knew my heart could feel like it was going to explode with joy until he trotted his furry white paws over to me as a two pound puppy.  It was love at first lick.  That said, while he is the cutest, sweetest dog on the planet, he doesn’t really know any tricks.  He’s four years old and only knows “sit.”  Not particularly impressive.  He also doesn’t really listen to a word I say unless it is W A L K or T R E A T.  So, is it too late to teach Smitty anything new?  Or is it true what they say, “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks”?

Well, as I did some research it became abundantly clear that dogs and men may have a lot more in common than you might think.  Now, let me preface this by saying that no matter how hard you try, you can never “change” a man.  However, some bad behavior can be alleviated by using the very same tactics you might use to train your beloved pooch.

Set the Precedent: From the beginning, it is imperative to make clear which behavior is acceptable and which behavior is not.  If you’ve let him chew up your shoes, bark all night, and pee on the rug for a while now, you can’t all of a sudden decide that you don’t like that behavior.  Start early and be firm (no matter how cute his little face is).

Positive Reinforcement: While you might think scolding, and smacking, and rubbing his nose in pee is most effective in correcting bad behavior, you’d be wrong.  Giving praise, compliments, and treats for the desired behavior is far more effective.  When he knows he will be rewarded for acting a particular way, he’s more likely to repeat that behavior (Pavlov’s dog ring a bell?).

Consistency is Key: You have to be consistent in your training because it can be very confusing otherwise.  If you let him get away with crapping on the floor one day, but then berate him for it the next, he isn’t going to know if it’s okay or not.

Patience is a Virtue: Going along with the last tip is patience.  Behavior won’t change over night.  So, stick with it and be consistent.

If all else fails, at least he’s cute, right?

Would You Wednesday: Going the Distance

By |February 16th, 2011|Why Did or Why Don't?|

Luckily. I, myself have never really had to deal with a long distance relationship.  However, I know quite a few people who have dabbled in frequent flyer flings.  I require far too much time and attention to be a candidate for one.  One thing I’ve learned from talking with friends who have decided to partake in pen pal passion, is that the math is simple.  How ever long you’ve been dating… divide it by 3.6.  Let me break it down for you… If you are lucky, you will get to see your beloved every weekend for two days.  So two times fifty two (that’s 104)… Not a whole lot considering there are 365 days a year.  So, basically, if you’ve been dating for a year, you’ve really only been dating for three months (tops).

Another thing that was brought up was the fact that a long distance relationship can sometimes deflect the real relationship flaws because you are only able to spend a short amount of time with someone and then return to your normal life.  So, anything that may have been going wrong over the weekend is forgotten about in the lag time between your next flight.  When you can only see someone for a short period of time, you are on your very best behavior.  Day to day life and challenges are not really a part of your relationship.  People can show you the parts of them that they want you to see and nothing else.  While emailing, texting, and Skyping, you can “play a role” of who you want your mate to think you are.  It is incredibly difficult to really know someone who is thousands of miles away.  Often times, when the real life proposition of moving to the same city is breached, it is quite scary.

Though sometimes it is unavoidable, I think that long distance relationships are really just time fillers for people who don’t really want to commit.  Unless there is a plan and time period for one (or both) party(ies) to relocate, it’s just like being in a holding pattern until you’re ready to land.

Now boarding rows 10-21.

*P.S. there are certain clauses to this.  Like if you happened to be dating before one of you had to move and have every intention of reuniting shortly.

Why Did You Eat That: Get in the Mood with Food

By |February 14th, 2011|Recipes, Why Did You Eat That?|

We’ve all heard the saying, “The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach” and while it may sound trite, they may be right. Some of you probably already have plans to cook up something delicious for your mate, but before you start clanging around in the kitchen and setting off the fire alarm, why not try these easy, delicious and libido enhancing recipes?

Oysters with Frozen Champagne Mignonette

  • 24 fresh oysters
  • 1/4 cup shallots
  • 3/4 cup pickled ginger
  • 1/2 cup dry champagne
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 tbsp fresh ground black pepper
  • 3/4 cup rice wine vinegar
  • 1 tbsp chopped chives

Directions:

  • In a food processor, combine shallots, ginger, champagne, sugar, pepper, and vinegar. Puree on medium-high for one minute. Pour mixture into a pie plate and freeze for several hours.
  • Clean and shuck the oysters, then place them on a serving platter. Just before serving, remove champagne mignonette from freezer and scrape one teaspoonful onto each oyster. Sprinkle each oyster with chopped chives and serve immediately.

Why this will put you in the mood:

Zinc.  Healthy levels of zinc are linked to the production of testosterone in both men and women and that means a higher libido for both of you.  Not to mention oysters are very phallic (use your imagination).

Dark Chocolate Covered Strawberries

  • 6 ounces Dark chocolate
  • 3 tablespoons Half and half cream
  • 1/2 tablespoon Unsalted butter
  • 20 Large strawberries or 30 medium strawberries.

Directions:

  • In a one-quart glass bowl combine chocolate and cream. Heat in microwave oven on high 1 1/2 to 2 minutes, stirring occasionally, until smooth. Add butter and stir until melted.
  • Dip each strawberry into the chocolate mixture allowing the excess chocolate to drip back into the bowl. If necessary, add additional cream to the chocolate to achieve desired coating consistency. Transfer the coated strawberry to a baking sheet lined with foil or waxed paper and repeat process.
  • Allow the chocolate to cool and then chill the strawberries until chocolate is set, about 20 to 30 minutes.

Why this will put you in the mood:

Strawberries are high in Vitamin C, which is great for flushing toxins from your system (keeping your beautiful) and they are also great for keeping his “swimmers” healthy.  The color red is also scientifically proven to stoke the fire.

Tryptophan and Phenylethylamine are natural feel good chemicals.  Luckily, both are found in dark chocolate.

Spicy Chocolate Martini

  • 1 ounce vanilla vodka
  • 3 ounces Baileys
  • 2 ounce Kailua
  • 2 dried chili peppers, crushed (we used chili de arbol)
  • Ice

Mixing Directions:

  • In a glass, soak dried peppers in the vanilla vodka for 30-60 minutes. The longer you soak, the spicier you get.
  • Place all ingredients into a martini shaker and shake.
  • Strain mixture into chilled martini glass (you don’t want the seeds)
  • Garnish with extra chili peppers!

Why this will put you in the mood:

Well, you already know what chocolate can do for you, but did you know that chili peppers are chock full of a chemical called capsaicin?  Capsaicin aids in the release of endorphins which gives you the feeling of euphoria.

Dig in!
