Friday Frocks: Maxed Out

By |May 20th, 2011|Friday Frocks|

I HAVE NOTHING TO WEAR!!! How many times have you shouted that at your closet whilst standing there staring at its contents in just your skivvies? For me, the number of times is countless. No need to take it out on your poor wardrobe though.  Instead invest in the never fail fashion trend: the maxi dress.    The easiest way to look chic this summer is by slipping into a maxi dress.  Don’t believe me? Here’s my top five reasons for maxing out:

  1. It’s basically one step dressing.  A maxi dress has the ability to make you look feminine and romantic without trying.
  2. Maxis are incredibly figure forgiving.  Eat as much potato salad as you please.
  3. You don’t need to shave your legs.  (Sorry, fellas).
  4. Perfect for pairing with flats.  Give those tootsies a rest!
  5. You can hide small children, pets, and thunder thighs under them.

Whether you choose a breezy bohemian style or a simple slinky column, you’re bound to turn a few heads in one of these:

1. Twelfth Street by Cynthia Vincent Flutter Sleeve Maxi Dress, $366, 2. Diane von Furstenberg Ethyl Long Wrap Maxi Dress, $545, 3. Winter Kate Silk Maxi Dress, $260, 4. Free People Hippie Trip Maxi Dress, $198, 5. French Connection Leah Linen Maxi Dress, $108, 6. All Saint Pious Maxi Dress, $90, 7. Vintage Havana Tie Dye Maxi Dress, $64, 8. Gypsy 05 Long Organi Alligator Maxi Dress, $149, 9. Free People Polynesian Princess Maxi Dress, $198, 10. Style Stalker Venom Maxi Dress, $169, 11. Alice + Olivia Printed Halter Maxi Dress, $440, 12. Shoshanna Twist Front Printed Maxi Dress, $485

Chillin’ out, maxin’, relaxin’ all cool.

Friday Frocks: Anchors Away

By |May 13th, 2011|Friday Frocks, Why Did You Wear That?|

After asking my dad to send me the baby photo from yesterday, he got a little carried away and sent a barrage of other fair haired childhood pictures.  That’s when I saw the little gem above.  Disregarding that sassy face I’m making, check out that outfit!  Thanks, mom!  You got me started on this whole “nautical” trend early.  One might even say I was ahead of my time.

After seeing this picture, it should be no surprise that one of my alltime favorite outfits I named “the pirate” and some day I will post it on here.  I know a pirate isn’t a sailor, per se, but they both set sail on the high seas.  I like seamen… er, wait.  Anyway, nautical inspired dresses are a great way to dive right into summer.  You can never go wrong with classic navy or red and white.

1. Forever 21 Anchors & Stripes Dress, $19.80, 2.Michael Kors Striped Cashmere Knit Dress, $1,695, 3. Marc by Marc Jacobs Delfine Sailor Dress, $187.60, 4. Motel Emilia Nautical Stripe Gold Button Dress, $96.02,  5. Diane von Furstenberg Cyrani Short Sleeve Dress, $345, 6. Milly Chevron Stripe Dress, $295, 7. Rugby Abberbury Striped Rugby Dress, $128, 8. Sonia by Sonia Rykiel Sailor Dress, $552.10, 9. American Apparel Stripe Pocket Frock, $41, 10. Milly Colorblock Dena Dress, $195

Style your sailor inspired frock with gold jewelry, a bouncy ponytail and neutral shoes… or you can take a cue from two year old WhyDid and slip on a pair of oxfords.

Ahoy matey!

Friday Frocks: Jamaican Me Crazy

By |May 6th, 2011|Friday Frocks|

From what to wear to make an ex-boyfriend jealous to which underwear is sexy rather than skanky, my friends often ask me for style advice and I usually just answer them privately, but a friend sent me a message this week and I realized that it’s probable that many of you are also wondering the same things.

Peep,

I am going to a summer wedding in Jamaica and have no clue what kind of dress to wear. I’m thinking a chiffon maxi dress but I haven’t found any that I like. You know how much I love your posts on WhyDid, so I was hoping you would maybe want to do a post on this? If not, no biggie. Love you lots!!

xoxo,
Peep

Don’t ask about the nickname… Anyway, Peep, I think you’re onto something with the chiffon maxi.  It is the perfect option for a destination wedding for two reasons, 1). it’s breezy and light, 2). chiffon dresses are easy to pack and won’t require any ironing or ridiculous garment bag.  If you think you might be dipping your toes in the water after dancing the night away, maybe you can opt for a tea length or short chiffon dress.  Be sure to pick a bright color or bold pattern for maximum tropical thunder.  Some espadrilles or embellished sandals are the way to go when navigating sand and possible “rocky” terrain (especially after downing some rum punch or Red Stripe). Keep accessories light- some bangles and maybe a long necklace.  Now you’re ready to celebrate in style.

1. DSQUARED2 Natasha Long Dress, $1,950, 2. ADAM Colorblock Long Halter Dress, $395, 3. AKA New York Malibu Dress, $398, 4. Forever 21 Floral Maxi Dress, $16.50, 5. Winter Kate Harlequin Chiffon Maxi Dress, $285, 6. Ella Moss Penelope Maxi Dress, $189, 7. Robbi & Nikki Beaded Chiffon Dress, $265, 8. Halston Heritage Tiered Chiffon Romper, $295, 9. Top Shop Chiffon Bandeau Dress by Rare, $110

Let’s also not forget about the hair.  Destination weddings often include tropical climates.  I know that the minute my hair meets humidity, I resemble a wildebeest.  So, finding a hairstyle that not only looks pretty, but also holds up against wild weather is crucial.  Whether your hair is wooly and wild like mine, or fine and frail below are some great options to keep you looking beach wedding chic:

Yeah, mon!

Friday Frocks: Show and Pas-tell

By |April 23rd, 2011|Friday Frocks, Why Did You Wear That?|

The other day my dad was complaining that people don’t dress up for Easter like they used to.  While people certainly have become more casual, he’s probably just spoiled due to my mother’s extreme outfits that she put her children in for the holiday.  For as long as I can remember (until I had a say in the matter) I recall being strapped into an easter bonnet, fluffy dress, ruffled socks or tights, and some form of jazzy shoes (I wish I had pictures).  When I talk about the Easter bonnet, I’m not talking about the run of the mill eyelet cap, I’m talking about fresh flowers sewn in to match my dress.  My mother is no joke.

So, while you may not have the time (or interest) in sewing flowers to your cap, there’s no reason you can’t get into the holiday spirit by  prancing around this Easter Sunday in one of these flirty pastel frocks.  They’re enough to make the Easter Bunny blush:

1. Contrarian Barbara Bib Dress, $381, 2. Forever 21 Floral Sweetheart Tube Dress, $19.80, 3. Gianni Bini Della Dress, $138, 4. Wyatt Ivory Chiffon Big Rose Print Dress, $84.15, 5. Amanda Uprichard Joan Dress, $194, 6. Roxy Full Time Dress, $39.50, 7. Free People Flutter Away Striped Dress, $98, 8. Top Shop Pleated Neck Dress by Love, $76

Hoppy Easter!
