Let’s play a game, shall we? As you may or may not have heard, CBS cracked down on the dress code for the Grammy’s this year. One might remember some of the outfits past that probably led up to the snoozefest that was the Grammy’s this evening. See, half of the fun of music award shows like the Grammy’s is watching the parade of circus like attire come down the red carpet. So, here’s my question: if our favorite songstresses are forbidden from showcasing their “fleshy parts,” what on Earth are they going to wear? This is where the game comes into play…

It’s called, “How Can I Show Skin in Unconventional and Semi-Inappropriate Ways?” Seems the ladies of music are not only familiar with this little extracurricular activity, but also seasoned pros. Our little vocalists found all sorts of fun ways to show skin tonight from sheer panels to sky high slits, taking our newly coined and overly lengthy named game to the next level. As a matter of fact, I’m pretty sure spotting and debating dress code violations was probably the most exciting part of the Grammy’s.

Hide and Seek:

Put on Your Big Girl Pants:

Beyonce in Osman, Janelle Monae, Kaley Cuoco in Amen

On the other end of the spectrum, some of the gals seemed to take the dress code very seriously by wearing red carpet pant looks. Beyonce donned a jumpsuit taking a cue from spring’s red hot black and white trend, Janelle sported her standard suit look, and Kaley just looks like she scored a last minute invite.

Something Bad Happened:

I felt compelled to place Florence and Kimbra next to each other. It’s like they are starring in some kind of mythical fairytale about a fairy princess and her pet dragon… and well, Katy Perry. Don’t tell me how it ends.

These really just needed to be seen.

Why Did You Wear That: Don’t Be a SAG

Judging by tonight’s Screen Actors Guild Awards (SAG), I don’t watch enough TV… or at least I’m not watching the right TV shows… because I didn’t know who half of the people walking the red carpet were. One would have thought that could have been easily cleared up by simply tuning into the red carpet pre-show interviews, but the opposite was true. Somehow, E! left me ever more befuddled than before by presenting the most awkward interviews and time spent talking about dubstep, juggling, and making it rain. This is probably the only time I’ve been left wondering, “Where’s Seacrest?” While scouting for the night’s best dressed was more like a game of “Where’s Waldo?” watching the b-roll footage, I managed to identify the evening’s style stars, style stalls, and overall trends.

It’s clear that winners wear blue and while navy may not officially be the new black (which was still incredibly strong), it was the color that ruled the crimson carpet. If you weren’t black and blue, you might have shimmered in metallics and if you were looking to punch things up, pink was the go to hue.

Oh, I feel some of your salty stares right now, but I stand firm on my worst dressed choices. It all (mostly) comes down to one simple thing: fit. While Jessica Chastain proves a redhead can wear red on the red carpet, she looked more Jessica Rabbit than sexy starlet and unfortunately, that includes wearing a dress that is two sizes too small. Remember, my friends, “wrinkles point to the problem areas.” It pained me to include Julianne Moore because, to me, she is a classic beauty and remember she was one of my best dressed at the Golden Globes? This slinky black and white Chanel, just skims a little too low– now I know these are the SAG awards, but the top of this dress simply makes her look, ahem, saggy. As for Morena? Two words: swamp thing.

Why Did You Wear That: Golden Girls

I stayed up putting this together until 4am last night… which led me to sleep in this morning, throwing off my entire schedule… and that’s why you’ve had to wait so long to hear what I’m sure you’ve been fidgeting in your seat hoping all day long to hear: my opinion.

And so below you’ll find my picks for the best, the worst, and the biggest trends that were seen on the red carpet from last night’s Golden Globes. It’s funny how different some of these dresses look in photographs as opposed to watching them live on TV. The colors look different, there’s no movement, and a little bit of the magic is sucked out of them. While gathering these snaps, I started to question my original picks, but then decided to go with the dresses that made me grin from the get go.

Last night’s show was all about the women of Hollywood and they certainly dressed the part. This is the first time in a long time where I actually had a hard time whittling down my choices and debating on how much to include in my recap. But enough about me, let’s get down to business.

The Best:

And with every award show, there tends to be a trend or two that rules the red carpet. This year, without a doubt, it was the presence of black. At one point, I was left scratching my head wondering if this show was being held in Los Angeles or New York. Contrary to the belief that black is boring, the ladies found ways to wear this staple that were the least bit dull.

Sprinkled in with basic black were pops of tangerine, bits of blush, and lots of sparkle. Here are some trends that stood out and can probably expect to see more of during upcoming award shows.

Why Did You Wear That: Let’s Make Beautiful Music Together

Another year, another round of award shows doling out little metal trophies to folks who may or may not deserve them. But the fun is not in who wins what as much as it is in who wears what. So, let the self tanner application, lapses in style judgement, and wardrobe malfunctions begin and let’s kick things off with last night’s American Music Awards.

While it’s been a while since I’ve tuned in, some things remain exactly as they did a year ago… and beyond. These include but are not limited to:

They’re still letting Chris Brown perform. Why they even let him out of his cage, I’ll never know, but this white girl won’t be dancing like it’s her birthday when his songs come on. Ever.
Jenny McCarthy is still hot.
You still can’t touch MC Hammer.
Christina Aguilera still wears leotards when she probably shouldn’t (but she can still sing like nobody’s business, so we’ll give her a pass).
Pitbull is still making songs that don’t make any logical sense in English or Spanish.
Crowding the stage with babes in bedazzled bustiers will still cover up any bad performance.
Taylor Swift is still singing about some boy who did her wrong in something that resembles a bad prom dress not like the La Femme prom dress that you can find online.
Nicki Minaj is still in need of a time out.
Pink could still kick your ass.
No Doubt is still as rad as ever.

And while it’s nice to have a bit of stability in your life, I’m a little concerned about America’s choices in music. Perhaps that’s a better indicator of the state of our nation? One thing that does seem to be changing is Justin Bieber’s voice (anyone else catch that?) which was quite clear after hearing him dedicate his win to the “haters” (he realizes he’s an eighteen year old 98lb white kid, right?). So, I decided I was going to come up with my own award categories that seem much, much more important:

So, let’s step it up, folks. We’ll consider this a “warm up.” A “rehearsal” if you will. Last time I checked, which was just now, my socks are still on, so no one particularly blew me away. Bring on the crazy… I’ve gotta have something to write about.

Why Did You Wear That: Pants Off, Dance Off

Welp, I guess we’re not wearing pants anymore. Here’s the lovely Erin Heatherton at Bergdorf’s 111th Anniversary party… wearing (or not wearing) a Jason Wu creation (he’s pictured here with her).

Earlier this week, I posted this photo of Lea Michele on WhyDid’s Facebook page. Also not wearing pants. And earlier this year, the beautiful Beyonce was also seen wearing a pantless wonder at the Met Gala. So, is this a thing now? If so, I’ll dust off my leotards right now. I’ve been looking for a good reason for a bikini wax. You think Lady Gaga is laughing somewhere? I mean, she started it.
