Setting the Mood: Sleep Tight

This time of year, when the weather goes from pleasantly crisp to shockingly cold, it’s quite easy to want to just throw in the towel, err… cashmere blanket, and just stop caring about what you wear. It’s even quite likely that you’ve completely given up on putting yourself together and leaving the house at all. I’ve found that I now prefer a pleasant night in rather than a raucous night out. Not to mention, my razor blade refills have become fewer and fewer. Pretty soon Smitty is going to think I’m fair game. That said, there really is no reason to be a complete and utter hot mess. There’s gotta be a happy medium between comfy sweats and club slut… right?

As I sat having dinner with friends at Barbuto on Saturday night (that glass garage door makes for fantastic people watching), in addition to the gentleman in the grey knit cap who walked by over ten times and was clearly casing the joint (or my friends), we were astonished at the parade of Paul Frank printed flannel pajama pants. Come. On. Hello Kitty printed pants aren’t okay in Wal-Mart and they sure as heck aren’t welcome on the streets of the West Village. When designers sent pajama inspired looks down the runways, I doubt Spongebob was what they had in mind. I live in a neighborhood that is so trendy, I have to up my game when merely running to the corner deli. Sure, I’m just on a TP run, but the rest of you are gearing up for stylish dinner dates and tequila shots at Tortilla Flats. So, whether you’re staying in or heading out, pull yourselves together, girls.

Setting the Mood: I’m a Creep

Well, I was trying to avoid it altogether… but you can’t fight the calendar. Halloween and its impending skank parade are fast approaching, so we may as well just address this situation head on. Perhaps I’m just old now or I’ve seen one too many “naughty nurse” or “frisky flight attendant” but I’ve about had it with the oh so obvious “insert the word slutty in front of” Halloween costume. It would appear we can turn just about anything erotic… even a skunk. So, how about this year we go for artistic makeup or eery attire as opposed to exposing our ass cheeks for all of the city to see? Let’s keep creepy classy and besides, subtle is most sexy.

Setting the Mood: Forevergreen

We’ve already identified oxblood as one of this fall’s standout shades for apparel and accessories, but there’s another hue that’s sure to be a hit this fall and will most likely stay strong straight into the winter. What might that color be? Hunter green, my friends. For quite some time I was a bit disenchanted with this particular shade (with good reason, of course). You see, my mom went through a bit of a “green” period during the 90’s and I would be willing to say about 78% or our home was decorated in dark green. Some might have called it overkill. We’ll just call it dedication. I had the same problem with baby carrots and turkey sandwiches for many years after my dad packed them in our lunches every single day for the majority of grade school.

And just like I now enjoy a great turkey sandwich, my feelings towards forest green have also come around. Fall’s deep shade of green is different than that of emerald green from seasons past. This evergreen is so dark it could appear almost black and it gives a complete look of luxe. Find a way to work it into your wardrobe with a knit maxi dress, chic bag, or soft velvet pants.

Setting the Mood: Sweater Weather

I may have spent my childhood growing up in Florida, but I always had an attraction to too all things knitwear. I remember wishing the thermometer would dip below sixty so I could find good reason for wearing sweaters so carefully selected by my doting grandma (Mee Maw), who lived up north and must’ve thought that even her granddaughter in the Sunshine State might catch cold without the proper attire. I recall one sweater specifically. It was a kelly green number embellished with some type of gold coin like discs that I wore as a tunic over a pair of black and white houndstooth stirrup (yes, stirrup) leggings. See, even as an adolescent I knew the difference between leggings and pants.

As an adult, I had the privilege of taking my sweater obsession even further when I worked in knitwear product development for Henri Bendel’s famously fabulous cashmere. I now know more about weaves, wefts, and fibers than I’d like to admit. So, while there is a small window where we, northerners, will enjoy all that is fall before we trade in our cardigans for sleeping bag coats, I can’t deny my delight in draping myself in cozy cashmere and lofty knits.

Setting the Mood: Check, Please!

When you think of flannel, there are a few things that might come to mind: 90’s garage bands, Al Borland, lumberjacks, thick framed glasses sans lenses, Old Spice… Anyone else getting turned on? No?

And while I don’t need a man who borrows my beauty products, one thing I don’t mind sharing with my boyfriend is his shirts. Thankfully, when it comes to flannel, bigger can be better. The trend could possibly come across as a bit hipster ’cause as our new friend we picked up at Mas (you need to go eat there, by the by) said, “It’s always fall in Brooklyn.” (He lives there- he’s allowed to say that), but when styled a la glamorous grunge, it is anything but Brooklyn (as seen here)– not that there is anything wrong with that.
