Setting the Mood: There Will Be Fireworks

Ever pick up the newspaper…. who am I kidding, who reads newspapers. Ever look at your Twitter newsfeed and after scanning the headlines think to yourself, “Dang it, I’m pretty psyched to be an American.”? Yeah, I think that sometimes too. Other times, I’m ready to flee the country, but today isn’t going to be one of those days. Today we are going to celebrate and channel all that is fabulous about the good ol’ U S of A… and find ways to wear it. That’s right, we are doing all things stars, stripes, blue, red, and white.

Back around Memorial Day, the trend of sporting patriotic style made its debut and seems that since then, being proud to be an American only became that much more on trend. Well, as it turns out, this week we commemorate our great country’s independence and I really can’t think of a better time to get your patriotism on.

Setting the Mood: Dream a Little Dream

Well, it is officially summer. June 20th (typically the 21st , damn you, leap year) marked summer solstice, which is the longest day of the year. This may bring visions of starry lit soirees, dining al fresco, and soft cascading fabrics. What better time to channel Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. No, I don’t mean that of the pasties and panties of the Playboy Mansion. I mean ethereal makeup and hair full of flowers. Sheer chiffons and strappy sandals.

If you happen to be a fan of HBO’s Girls (um, of course you are), you watched the wild Jessa tie the knot wearing a dress so simple and Bohemian, she could have been a character straight from the play. It was the perfect casual summer frock to wear when saying “I do.” Heck, it would have been a lot cheaper than an $8,500 Vera Wang (anyone need a dress?). So whether you are looking to tie the knot in something simple or just sport a fresh and summery frock, let Jessa’s look and Shakespeare’s intoxicating tale lead your wardrobe inspiration.

Every summer New Yorkers flee the hustle and bustle of the big city to sit in hours of traffic only to arrive in the Hamptons where they can rub elbows with the same folks they did back in the Big Apple. And while it may seem silly to spend over four hours (if you’re lucky) of travel time to and from Manhattan’s version of weekend summer camp, there certainly is something to be said for fresh air, swimming pools, and pretty people. I do believe the Hamptons are why summer Fridays were even invented.

So, whether your scene is sweating and socializing under the big white tent at polo, sipping Andre Balazs rose and table dancing at Sunset Beach, or just kicking off your sandals and relaxing at The Surf Lodge, the look is (or should be) casual elegance. This is what makes it easy to spot the locals versus the visitors.

Ever have one of those mornings where you wake up with a smile on your face only to have the gut crashing realization that the day before (and your current reality) was a complete and utter disaster? Oh yeah. I’m having one of those. While I certainly don’t know the answer to everything, I do know two things quite intimately: 1. There is such a thing as too many mimosas, and 2. You have no one but yourself to blame for making the same mistakes time and again.

To perk up my less than perfect disposition, I’ve gathered together a few of my favorite things to remind myself, “Hey, life’s not so bad.” Some of those best things are free (it’s true what they say), while others may break the bank (a girl can dream, right?). So, this is a semi-self-centered post, but I suspect you may be smitten with some of my obsessions as well.

And while you may not be able to wake up from this terrible dream, at least you’ll have other things to smile about.

Setting the Mood: Turn it Down

Well, in case you were wondering, neon is a HUGE trend for summer. So huge, in fact, that I’m already over it. Having arrived back in New York, I could not believe how much neon I saw on the gorgeous girls of Manhattan. It wasn’t just a matter of a bright sighting here and there… It was more like packs of girls who looked like a pack of highlighters. Each lovely lady clad in a dayglow shade. Well, I knew I’d had enough when I, myself, was sporting a tank top as bright as the highlighted passages in my summer reading. Everywhere I looked, someone else was wearing a similar style. I wanted to hide, but it’s awfully difficult to be inconspicuous when sunglasses are needed just to take a gander in my direction.
