WhyDid Wisdom: S.O.S. (Save Ourselves)

By |May 10th, 2012|WhyDid Wisdom|

battleship gameIn case it’s news to you, I’m currently going through a bit of a rough patch.  A “transitional” period, if you will.  I woke up one day and knew things were never going to be the same.  I sensed it the moment I opened my eyes.  It was the strangest feeling.  At first, I didn’t really think the impending doom was such a good thing and was certain that my life was going down faster than the Titanic.  I tried as I might to pump up my life raft to prevent this change from happening, but as time has passed, I realize that things couldn’t have happened any other way.

So, here I am.  I have no home and no real responsibilities other than making sure to keep these posts coming and keeping Smitty’s bowl full.  I’m living out of a suitcase and have become a real life gypsy bouncing from one city to the next.  It’s like my first U.S. tour- minus the backup dancers.  And while I hardly know where I will be next week, let alone next year, I’ve found this time to be both exhilarating and terrifying.

In times of trouble, lots of people will offer you encouragement, loving words, and their own personal little tidbits of wisdom.  While no one can ever really say exactly what you want to hear, it comes from a loving place and one must keep that in mind.  Every now and again, someone’s words will resonate with you.  However, there are a few phrases that are truly infuriating when uttered during a time of duress.  One such phrase is along the lines of, “If you say ‘you can’t’, you can’t.”  Hearing this particular semblance of wisdom sends me into such a tailspin of anger that I kind of want to stab the utterer in the face with a feather.

But alas, there might be a smidgeon of truth to this oh so aggravating statement (which, of course, only makes it that much more aggravating).  As it turns out… the opposite of positive thinking may very well be the self fulfilling prophecy.

So, let’s talk about self fulfilling prophecies, shall we?

It’s true.  I can be a bit of a worrier.  I’m not sure whether it has something to do with watching too many Lifetime movies or just your run of the mill “trust issues” that I’ve managed to rack up over time, but I can craft up quite a storyline in my head before it’s ever even happened.  This is very useful for creative writing… not so much for every day life.  My dad often reminds me that the things I fear most are the things that never happen.  I get myself worked up into a tizzy and fixate on what might happen, rather than seeing what is actually happening.

I like to tell myself that my worrying is merely forward thinking and I’m just trying to brace myself for the worst, as if life is an ongoing game of chess.  But is my defense mechanism protecting me from trouble or really just causing these terrible things to happen?  Am I just Chicken Little waiting for the sky to fall?

It’s also no secret that I haven’t exactly had the best of luck in the love department.  Perhaps I have terrible taste in men or maybe I’m to blame for all of my relationship implosions.  I go in assuming that most men are grade-A douchebags and am typically just waiting for the other shoe to drop.  Who knows if there even was another shoe to drop, but I always manage to make it happen.  A psychic once told me I’d have no trouble attracting men, just trouble keeping them.  Touche, oh clairvoyant one.  Joke’s on me.

By focusing on what could happen or what you think the outcome may be, or just worrying about the “what if’s”, you are changing your intrinsic behavior.  This minute shift in demeanor could very well be twisting fate and changing your charted route without you even realizing it.  It’s a ripple effect.  Pretty soon a slight wake has turned into a tidal wave, and you, S.S. Worry Wart, are going under.

You sunk my battleship.

Would You Wednesday: I See Through You

By |May 9th, 2012|Why Did or Why Don't?|

met gala see through gownsThis past Monday, the Super Bowl of fashion, the Met Gala happened in New York City.  As any good fashionista knows, you better arrive dressed to impress or risk being on every news media outlet’s worst dressed list.  And deck themselves out is precisely what this year’s A-list did.  While there are always a few stand out trends (like Wintour in white and a smattering of sunshine-y yellow), the one trend that seemed to catch everyone’s eye… and breath… was the see through gowns showing off some skin and some seriously gorgeous gams.

To some, this excess of skin may be offensive, but I personally have no problem with it… so long as it’s done with taste rather than haste.  I grew up in a kind of “naked house” (it was mostly me and mom… so there was no need for modesty).  I’d wear a tissue if I could get away with it and as a matter of fact, I have a dress that I reference as the “tissue dress.”  I get it though, one can take a little bit of chic cheekiness and turn it into just a lot of cheek.  And while I’m not put off by the female body, some people just don’t appreciate some good side boob and are abhorred by the mere trace of a nipple.

So would you don one of these daring dresses?

Seeting the Mood: Flower Power

By |May 7th, 2012|Setting the Mood|

flower mood boardAre we done?  Are we done with those April showers?  Cause you’ve been awfully temperamental this year, Ms. Nature.  I don’t really know what your problem is, but it’s May and you promised flowers.  And I’m going to hold you to that.

What girl doesn’t like receiving or at least admiring fresh flowers?  The answer is a cold hearted one.  Remember when Lady Malks, taught us what our favorite flowers said about us?  I think there’s a lot to be said about your taste in flora and fauna.  Granted, I’ve rarely met a flower I didn’t like.  Although there are a few flowers that I just can not (will not) tolerate.  Carnations and gerber daisies – the cantaloupe of flowers.  Why don’t you just send me an Edible Arrangement?

Well, anyway, flowers aren’t just for sniffing anymore.  This year, there’s a plethora of ways to wear your florals, having you looking fresh as a flower (not a daisy).

Weekend Playlist: The Fifth of May

By |May 5th, 2012|Weekend Playlist|

cinco de mayoHappy Cinco de Mayo… Now before you strap on that sombrero, do you have any idea what Cinco de Mayo is all about?  No?  Hell, I don’t even know why we celebrate it.  I do know that I could live off of salsa and margaritas alone… but let’s pretend for a moment that there’s more to Cinco de Mayo than an excuse to drink Corona before noon:

Cinco de Mayo (Spanish for “fifth of May”) is a celebration held on May 5. It is celebrated nationwide in the United States and regionally in Mexico, primarily in the state of Puebla, where the holiday is called El Día de la Batalla de Puebla (English: The Day of the Battle of Puebla).  The date is observed in the United States as a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride, and to commemorate the cause of freedom and democracy during the first years of the American Civil War.  In the state of Puebla, the date is observed to commemorate the Mexican army’s unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín.  Contrary to widespread popular belief, Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico’s Independence Day—the most important national patriotic holiday in Mexico—which is actually celebrated on September 16.

Well then, seems that there is, in fact, quite a bit to celebrate… to which you will most definitely need something to shake your maracas to.

And if you find that the salt on the rim of your glass is not enough sustenance to get you through the fifth of May, you should go ahead and try whipping up these easy (and delicious) enchiladas.

The List Volume LXXII

By |May 4th, 2012|The List|

ichat puppiesThey say you’ve gotta take the good with the bad and I’d say that’s a pretty good rule of thumb.  After all, not everyone’s life can be candy coated kisses and sparkly sprinkles all the time… nor should it be a constant shit storm.  That’s where the intricate balancing act of life comes into play.  It’s not always easy, trust me, I know.  I’ve been a little negative lately.  Weird.  No, but seriously, I’ve been a real Sally Sad Sack and while I won’t completely deprive you of my weekly rant, I do fully intend on counterbalancing it with equal parts sunshine and kitty cats.

  1. The “gentleman” who sat next to me on my flight wearing a tank top (mank top?).  Fine, I get it.  I see I’m not gonna win the mank top battle, but please, for heaven’s sake, save it for the beach or the gym… or put on a cardigan??
  2. Coffee grounds at the bottom of your cup.  A perfectly good way to ruin a perfectly good cup o’ joe.
  3. Tanning beds… can I offer you a smoke as well? patricia krentcil
  4. Waking up with unidentified bruises… leaving me looking like I mighta had a rough night on the main stage.
  5. Living out of a suitcase.

rainbow

  1. Living out of a suitcase.
  2. Having the best friends a girl could ask for.  Good enough to miss ’em when we’re apart and good enough that they still love me through my shit storms in hopes of the next rainbow.
  3. I’m late to the party, but this never gets old.
  4. A warm and freshly washed towel awaiting me after a shower.
  5. A bed full of dogs.

Seeing as it was easier to write the “good” than it was the “bad,” I think I’m well on the way to recovery… whatever that means.
