Monday Mashup: XOXO

By |February 22nd, 2011|Monday Mashup|

Hey Upper East Siders, this just in.  S may very well have her own doppelganger.  Seems a certain Aussie actress looks awfully similar to our sweet Serena especially when they strike this “over the shoulder” pose in slinky LBD’s.  With the same golden locks, perfectly peachy skin, and ould Teresa Palmer be voted next year’s sexiest woman alive? You be the judge.

Why Did You Eat That: Mac Daddy

By |February 22nd, 2011|Recipes, Why Did You Eat That?|

I really don’t know anyone who doesn’t like macaroni and cheese.  And if you don’t, then you’re no friend of mine.  It’s an American staple food and it can snap even the most PMS’ing diva out of her funk.

We were elated to find out about a place in downtown Los Angeles that’s sole purpose is to serve macaroni and cheese. Mac and Cheeza has four sizes of mac and cheese: Baby Mac, Momma Mac, Daddy Mac, and Mac Daddy. Once you’ve decided how hungry you are, it’s time to choose between regular noodles and rice and between their special “secret” cheese sauce and soy.  The big decisions are out of the way… let’s add some vegetables and/or meats (black olives, mushrooms, spinach, bacon, ham, chorizo) and top it off with either a cheese blend topper or spicy toasted walnuts.  Now, you can either eat in, take out, have it delivered, OR you can bake it at home!  I really see no downside to this place… except that you may not fit into your skinny jeans after falling in love with their perfect blend of cheesy delight.

If you can’t make it to downtown LA here is my very favorite mac and cheese recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 lb dried cavatappi or elbow macaroni pasta (cooked according to instructions on box)
  • 3 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3 cups whole milk
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups shredded swiss cheese
  • 1 cup of sharp cheddar
  • 2 tsp white truffle oil
  • salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • 1/4 cup bread crumbs
  • 1/4 cup shredded parmesan

Preparation:

Add butter to a saucepan over medium heat, and cook until the butter begins to foam and bubble. Add the flour and stir for about 1 minute. Slowly pour in the milk, whisking continuously until all the milk has been incorporated and the sauce begins to thicken. Make sure that there are no lumps in the sauce. Pass the sauce through a fine sieve if needed. This process should take 5 to 7 minutes.

Remove the pan from the heat and add the cheese, mixing until it has completely melted. Add the truffle oil and season to taste, with salt and pepper. Add the cooked and still warm pasta to the cheese sauce. Divide evenly among 4 bowls and sprinkle bread crumbs and parmesan cheese on top, if desired. Serve immediately.

So cheesy.

Friday Frocks: Heavenly Creations

By |February 18th, 2011|Friday Frocks|

I did not report on every last detail of New York Fashion Week- I like to leave that to the style obsessed.  My MO is to sit back, digest, filter out the garbage and focus on the fabulous.  Anyway, this week’s Friday Frocks is dedicated to all the beautiful creations that made their way down the runway this past week.  When I think of decadent, delicious frocks, I think of Vera, and Monique, and Oscar (oh my!).  I have to say, it’s kind of like someone read my mind, reached up to the heavens and pulled down these pretty pieces to fill me with girlish delight.  My very favorite colors are those of sunsets and evening skies, so I was beside myself to see all these beautiful frocks derived from that color palette.

Fall 2011 is shaping up to be a very stylish season.  I look forward to watching the starlets storm the red carpets in these beautiful frocks.

The List Volume XXXVIII

By |February 18th, 2011|The List|

I can’t lie, all week long I notice things that are completely and ridiculously obnoxious, but when it comes time to sit down and write “the list” I draw a complete blank.  Looks like I need an assistant.  Anyway, here’s what I came up with this week…

  1. People with SUV’s who don’t know how to drive them.  Seems like the worst drivers are always the ones with the biggest vehicles.
  2. Wasted time. Mine, yours, someone else’s.
  3. Leg 1 of Paris Hilton’s brothel themed 30th birthday parties.  Give it up already.
  4. The smell of burnt hair.
  5. Drama on Entourage. Why is he so annoying?  Why is he cast? Who owed him a favor?
  6. The sound of high heels that need reheeled.  Take care of that, would ya?
  7. When you smush your lipstick to the of the lid.  It’s never the same.
  8. Guys who are under the impression that they are, in fact, still in college.  Still in a fraternity, as a matter of fact.
  9. Luvs “Heavy Dooty” commercial.  Ew. Just ew.
  10. Speaking of creepy babies.

Why Did You Date Him: Can You Teach an Old Dog New Tricks?

By |February 17th, 2011|Why Did You Date Him?, WhyDid Wisdom|

Everyone knows how much I love my dog.  He literally taught me how to love.  I never knew my heart could feel like it was going to explode with joy until he trotted his furry white paws over to me as a two pound puppy.  It was love at first lick.  That said, while he is the cutest, sweetest dog on the planet, he doesn’t really know any tricks.  He’s four years old and only knows “sit.”  Not particularly impressive.  He also doesn’t really listen to a word I say unless it is W A L K or T R E A T.  So, is it too late to teach Smitty anything new?  Or is it true what they say, “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks”?

Well, as I did some research it became abundantly clear that dogs and men may have a lot more in common than you might think.  Now, let me preface this by saying that no matter how hard you try, you can never “change” a man.  However, some bad behavior can be alleviated by using the very same tactics you might use to train your beloved pooch.

Set the Precedent: From the beginning, it is imperative to make clear which behavior is acceptable and which behavior is not.  If you’ve let him chew up your shoes, bark all night, and pee on the rug for a while now, you can’t all of a sudden decide that you don’t like that behavior.  Start early and be firm (no matter how cute his little face is).

Positive Reinforcement: While you might think scolding, and smacking, and rubbing his nose in pee is most effective in correcting bad behavior, you’d be wrong.  Giving praise, compliments, and treats for the desired behavior is far more effective.  When he knows he will be rewarded for acting a particular way, he’s more likely to repeat that behavior (Pavlov’s dog ring a bell?).

Consistency is Key: You have to be consistent in your training because it can be very confusing otherwise.  If you let him get away with crapping on the floor one day, but then berate him for it the next, he isn’t going to know if it’s okay or not.

Patience is a Virtue: Going along with the last tip is patience.  Behavior won’t change over night.  So, stick with it and be consistent.

If all else fails, at least he’s cute, right?
