Why Did You Date Him: One Isn’t the Loneliest Number

By |February 10th, 2011|Why Did You Date Him?, WhyDid Wisdom|

As Valentine’s Day approaches, I know a lot of young ladies (and some of you men) are feeling a little down and out about spending this heart filled fuzzy wuzzy holiday alone.  Well, stop it.

The photo above is a little plaque my mom gave to me after a pretty shitty breakup (see where I get my sense of humor?).  I have never been the kind of girl who felt the need to have a boyfriend at all times.  Hell, I spent most of my college career single (and I didn’t even have Smitty yet!).  I enjoy hanging out with myself and I have dated enough to know that spending time with someone who sucks is more work than it’s worth.  Why would I want to spend my precious time entertaining some buffoon, when I could be rubbing my heels with a pumice stone or watching re-runs of SATC?  I’m being serious.

So many people are under the impression that if they are alone it says something about them.  I have seen and know quite a few people who are only in relationships because they feel it validates them in some way.  They’re completely miserable, but it’s totally better to be with someone crappy than be- gasp– alone, right?

I spent last Valentine’s Day with my dear, dear, TJ Kelly, eating cupcakes from Billy’s Bakery and making each other laugh.  It wasn’t that I didn’t have other offers (um, of course I did), but I would have preferred hanging with Teej any day of the week over forcing myself to spend the night with some d-bag who just wanted to get me liquored up and attempt to hump my leg later.  No, thanks!

Why can’t being single mean being confident?  Being single simply means you won’t settle for some average Joe and are holding out for Prince Charming. Duh.

Don’t let some silly holiday make you feel bad about being single.  Be happy that you aren’t stuck with a loser who you don’t even like.

Why Don’t You Try This: Bed of Nails

By |February 10th, 2011|Beauty Buzz|

I have gone on and on about my trials and tribulations with nail polish.  I just can’t keep polish on my pointers. I’ve Minx’ed, Axxium’ed, and Shellac’ed.  I considered pushing hard to bring chipped nails into style (wasn’t happening).  I’ve even spent time with my nails- gasp– naked!  Well, here I am again to chat about my latest endeavor into Lacquerville: population, 1.

While in the drugstore the other day picking up the essentials: TP, Aquaphor, Elle… I stumbled upon Sally Hansen Salon Effects.  I was initially just checking out the cute little nail art pens then nearly lost my shit when I saw these.  Just like Minx, Salon Effects are self adhesive strips of nail color that allow for zero drying time.  They are made from actual nail polish (how that works… don’t ask me) and come in bright solids, colorful glitter, and a variety of patterns.  I thought I was on top of my game finding these, but apparently, the word is out, cause my selection was very limited. So, I settled on a black and white floral pattern. Ten dollars for sixteen strips might sound steep, but not if it actually lasts ten days! Not to mention, Minx manicures can run you $50-65 a pop!

I’m not gonna lie, I may have been drinking wine when I attempted to apply these… I also should have probably had my glasses on . Despite my haphazard attempt at application, these babies still came out pretty great and I received compliments on them all weekend.  I read some other reviews, and I gotta say, these ladies must be real experts applying polish cause their manicures lasted much longer than mine.  I would say mine stayed sexy for a solid four days, but I would definitely try them again (perhaps sans cocktails) and would certainly recommend them to someone looking to add a little somethin’ somethin’ to their usual manicure.

*(Editor’s Note 3/8/11: I tried these again without prosecco and with my glasses and was delighted with the results.  They stayed on well over the 10 day time period with minimal chipping and maximum compliments!)

Why Don’t You Love Me?

By |February 9th, 2011|Gift Guide, Somethin for the fellas|

While some hypothesize that Valentine’s Day is just a fabricated holiday brought to you straight from the fine folks at Hallmark, I will never argue with a holiday that is all about love, chocolate, flowers, and lingerie.  With a mere five days to go until the big day, I have compiled a list of gifts that you will probably want to forward to your significant other ASAP!  Whether you’ve just started dating or you’re in for the long haul, these Valentine’s gifts are sure to make even Cupid smile. I’ve rated them G (you’re still at the sweet beginning or maybe you are buying these for your mom or sister) to R (you’re ready to cut loose and swing from the chandeliers!).  In any case, there’s something for everyone.

Why Did You Wear That: Block That Thang Up

By |February 8th, 2011|Celebrity Style, Why Did You Wear That?|

The runways were full of splashes of colors for spring.  Everyone from Gucci (Katy and Olivia are both wearing Gucci above) to Lanvin to Louis Vuitton sent color blocking down the catwalk.

Olivia, Emmy, and Katy have all been spotted sporting this colorful trend.  Color blocking is hot for spring and it’s not a trend for the faint of heart (wallflowers need not apply).  Color blocking works best with a mix of brights in the same color family or for a slightly less bold look try a bright color paired with a neutral (black, nude).

Feeling bold? Try it yourself with some of this bright options:

L to R: Equipment Signature Washed Silk Sleeveless Shirt, $180, Paul and Joe Jacoue Mid-Rise Straight Leg Jeans, $280, Jay Godfrey Holden Color Block Racerback Dress, $495, American Apparel Cotton Spandex Jersey Tank Thong, $26, Pleasure Doing Business 5 Band Solid Skirt, $96.80, Betsey Johnson Color Block Long Tank Sweater Dress, $288, BCBG Color Blocked T-shirt Dress, $148

Rock the block.

Why Did You Eat That: Can I have a Peace?

By |February 7th, 2011|Why Did You Eat That?|

I have had a love/hate (mostly hate) with Los Angeles for the past seven months. Between the traffic, the inflated egos, and plastic appearances, it’s been a tough adjustment for me. Though, I must say the weather here is insane and certainly does make up for what the city lacks in other areas.  One of my biggest gripes has been finding a great restaurant that isn’t too trendy and sceney (read: tacky), has great ambience, and actually has delicious food.

This past Friday we went to Pace in Laurel Canyon.  I had never heard of it and probably wouldn’t have even noticed it driving by if it hadn’t been pointed out. I was confused at first because I thought we were heading into the local market that is attached to the restaurant (am I a cheap date?), but was relieved when we walked into the outdoor terrace of the restaurant and then inside.

Immediately, I felt as if we had left Los Angeles altogether.  The decor was warm and cozy.  I’ve never been to Spain, but we could have easily been there (in my head at least).  The clientele was attractive, but unassuming and I knew we were in for a treat when I smelled the truffle mac and cheese that was a special for the evening.  We were seated at a table in the corner and I was elated to see a glass on the table with crayons in it.  Yes, things like that score big with me.  Another special we tried was an avocado stuffed with fresh crab that I could have happily spent the rest of my days eating as my only meal.  One of the best parts about the restaurant is that the food is all from local farmers and vendors so it is fresh and that absolutely comes through in your meal.  While this was absolutely not a “cheap date” we left feeling like we had actually gotten what we’d paid for.  The food was worth every penny. Did I mention the warm chocolate cake?

For a dinner at Pace, I would suggest something elegantly dressed down.  This is not the place to pour yourself into a Herve bandage dress.  I don’t suggest looking like you just rolled out of bed, but think “Oh this? I just threw something on.”

Clockwise: Brian Atwood Studded Multicolor Cutout Pump, $790, Equipment Signature Blouse, $188, Sparkle and Fade Leather Shorts, $128, Rebecca Minkoff Morning After Bag, $412.50, Lilly Pulitzer Basket Case Bangle, $58, Lauren by Ralph Lauren 20 Set Delicate Bangles, $68

Peace out.
