Why Did You Wear That: Stop Traffic

By |July 5th, 2012|Personal Style, Why Did You Wear That?|

kirsten smith nycOkay, let’s be serious, I’ve never been accused of being the type of beauty who could stop traffic, but it was fun to pretend.  And sometimes, a pair of fabulous shoes and leather shorts are all it really takes to get the brakes pumping.   I love the contrast of pairing rocker like leather shorts with a clean tailored white blouse.  The contradictions continue with the styling of hair in a tousled top knot and strapping on studded sandals.  You may not stop traffic, per se, but you’re sure to turn a few heads.

Beauty Buzz: You’re Doing It Wrong

By |June 21st, 2012|Beauty Buzz|

putting on makeupIt’s very, very easy to get stuck in your very own beauty rut.  We’ve learned to do things a certain way and tend to stick to what’s worked for us.  However, you might have grown a bit too accustomed to your regular regimen.  Here are five ways to shake things up and get more out of your beauty routine:

  1. Get dirty.  Here’s a secret:  I only wash my hair twice a week.  Gross?  Meh.  Let’s consider it water conservation.  I have about two feet of hair and it’s a bit on the dry side.  Not to mention, blowing out my naturally wavy locks, puts a lot of stress on my tresses.  Dry shampoo and perfecting the art of a top knot, allow for extra time between washes.  Give your hair a break and let your body’s own natural oil seep in and condition your hair.
  2. Eyes first.  We’ve been taught to paint on our pretty faces by starting with foundation and finishing with our eyes.  Well, here’s the thing: when you finally do reach the grand finale smokey eye, you’re pretty likely to ruin the perfect palette you created in the first place with flecks of shadow and liner smudging your face.  Why not try starting your eyes and then completing the look by smoothing off any mess with your foundation, bronzer, and blush?
  3. Brush it off.  Before even stepping foot into the shower, you should use a dry brush to exfoliate your skin.  This will not only deflake any and all tired summer skin, but it also increases circulation which aids in the fight against cellulite.  Two birds, one brush. (Try this one from Elemis).
  4. Don’t brush it out.  So, pretty much the only time I ever brush my  hair is right before I wash it (which I’ve mentioned only happens twice a week).  I brush to get all the tangles out pre-sudsing and then use a comb to release any new snags post conditioning.  Marcia Brady was wrong:  you absolutely can overdo it with the brushing.
  5. Crank it up.  When flat ironing your hair, it’s actually better to turn the heat all the way up and make one pass down your tresses than to use moderate heat and go over and over and over… your hair.

See what a little bit of backwards thinking can do?

The List Volume LXVIII

By |April 6th, 2012|The List|

katy perry leggings cameltoeIt’s no secret that I love checking the crazy things people Google to find WhyDid.  Sometimes they are just simple things like “what to wear to Soho House” or “what to wear to the airport.”  Other times, the topics are a bit more obscure like “hardest nipples in Hollywood” and I have to stop to ask, “You touch your mother with those fingers?”  This week was no different.  As per usual, cameltoe tops the list and you guys really, really love Katy Perry.  Well, I’m here to do what I do best and that is give the people what they want!!  Here’s ten of this week’s more Googled topics:

  1. Can I wear black to a garden wedding.  I mean, you can.  But do you really want to be that morbid girl wearing black at such a joyous event?  Try these for guidelines instead.
  2. White girl weave.  Not only have I worn one, I’ve expressed my great love for them.
  3. Gladstones MalibuLove, love, love this place.  And yes, yes I did go there when in LA a couple of months ago.  bloody mary gladstones
  4. Kirsten Smith Maxim.  As it turns out, I might have made an appearance.  If you can find it, congratulations.  You’ve got too much time on your hands.
  5. How to do a top knot.  I love a good top knot.  Here’s a step by step tutorial… but I think I’m going to have to make a video soon.top knot
  6. Celebrities wearing sneakers.  Everyone from Ann Hathaway to Alessandra Ambrosio was seen sporting stylish sneaks.
  7. Kerastase Cristalliste.  There has been so much interest in this line.  Stay tuned for a veeeery exciting contest…
  8. Girl wearing glasses.  I guess people really dig girls who wear glasses.  Just please don’t be one of those people who wears fake ones… girl wearing glasses
  9. Chalking hair.  Did a little tutorial on that.  I might add spraying hair with hairspray to set color as well. chalk hair
  10. Explanation why you stupid.  I got nothing.

The search continues.

Why Did You Wear That: I Would Like To Extend to You an Invitation to The Pants Party.

By |April 3rd, 2012|Personal Style, Why Did You Wear That?|

floral printed denimRemember back when I  invited you to the Pants Party?  Well, you knew I was going to RSVP “YES” to my own party.  Duh.  So, I found a pair of pretty awesome floral jeans at Zara (that were only $60!) and paired them with one of my favorite slouchy Kain tanks so as not to look too prissy, pretty, pretty princess-like.  (I don’t like to blow my cover too early).  This outfit is perfect for hanging out casually or could be a great date outfit with some strappy heels and shiny accessories.  I opted to lounge in the sunshine and slip my shoes off.  I “topped” it off with a big ol’ top knot.

Setting the Mood: Ballet Rehearsal

By |January 30th, 2012|Setting the Mood|

There are so many reasons to love ballet.  I have loved it since my very class when I was three years old.  I love the music.  I love the quiet elegance.  And I most certainly love the wardrobe.  There’s a reason I’m drawn towards soft blushes, and cascading fabrics.  It’s a classic case of “chicken or the egg” though.  Do I love tulle because I love ballet or do I love ballet because I love tulle?  And does it really matter anyway?

Whether you’ve thought about it or not, ballet and fashion are based upon the same principle.  Both are all about creating lines.  Ballet with your body, fashion with fabric.

You need a little more than a perfect top knot to channel your inner prima ballerina though.  Soft shades of peach (ballet pink), black and white.  Delicate fabrics like tulle and chiffon.  And every ballerina needs the perfect pair of shoes.

1. Brandy Pham Tulle and Chiffon Headband, $24, 2. RACHEL Rachel Roy Bobby Pins, $28, 3. Camilla and Marc Supremacy Chiffon Dress, $540, 4.  Chloe Metallic Textured Leather Ballet Flats, $450

Brava! Brava!
