Monday Mashup: Splitting Hairs

By |August 27th, 2012|Monday Mashup|

cutting hair with scissorsThey say you should get a trim every 6-8 weeks depending on hairstyle and goals (If you are trying to grow out your locks, check out Lion Locs products).  Seems that some folks get a bit scissor happy when heading to a men and women haircuts in Franklin, TN.  Perhaps they’re bored, perhaps they’ve had a bad breakup.  Whatever the case may be, somehow a trim turns traumatic when a millimeter turns into a mile.  This week in celebrity hairstyles, we have a teen songstress and a lady loving crooner who both decided to change things up by chopping their locks.  So, I’m just wondering, when is a haircut a good thing and when does it all go terribly wrong?

john mayer hairMan about about town, John Mayer, who recently split from Katy Perry (I know… that was what? Ten minutes?), was seen this weekend with newly shorn hair.  Maybe John realized that Katy was simply dating him due to his hairy resemblance to ex, Russell Brand?  Regardless, I vote his fresh crop a “do.”  He’s creepy enough as is… the extra hair only added to his douchey demeanor.  But now that his hair is no longer there to distract me, we’re gonna need to talk about that necklace…

miley cyrus hairAnd the teen queen of side boob, Miley Cyrus, also got a bit snippy recently.  While she had been seen sporting a top knot almost daily (have you seen her bun’s Twitter account?), she must have taken the joke a bit too seriously and lobbed off her locks for a very short, very blonde Andy Warhol-esque look.  Just when I was starting to think she was adorable, she cut her hair and it looks horrible.

But who cares what I think (you better!)?  What do you think?

Snip, snip.

Setting the Mood: Keep On Rockin’ Me

By |July 16th, 2012|Setting the Mood|

rock and rollI’ve said before that I actually might have been a rockstar in a past life.  Maybe I even missed my calling… except for the fact that I’m tone deaf and lacking any and all musical talent.  So, scratch that.  Doesn’t mean I can’t channel my inner rock goddess in the form of fashion.  I mean, we all know that fashion and music go hand in hand (leather and lace).  Being a rockstar doesn’t necessarily mean decking yourself out in head to toe leather- though I’m not opposed to such… shall we talk about my sophomore year of highschool homecoming dress?  Adding an edgier item to any ensemble can take you from Miley Cyrus to Pat Benatar.

Rock and roll may have died with Nirvana, but the style lives on.

So go ahead and party like a rockstar, unless that includes snorting ants.  Then I’m out.

Red Carpet Recap: I’m Billbored

By |May 21st, 2012|Red Carpet Recap|

billboard music awards red carptApologies for the tardiness of my Billboard Music Awards Red Carpet Recap… my dog, Smitty, was getting his teeth cleaned (see ya later, halitosis) and apparently that’s what the rest of us should have been doing rather than watching anyway. First of all, are we really still letting Chris Brown perform (let alone letting him out of his cage)? Remember when you built your Sunday evening around catching a music awards show? Popcorn and all? They were the “fun” award shows. Well, either I’m getting old or the music industry (and America) need to get it together, STAT. Since, very clearly, it can’t be the former, step it up singers and lady songbirds! Despite the snooze inducing show, the red carpet, as always, did not disappoint… and I don’t necessarily mean that in a good way…

Wait… was this a music award show or a movies award show? Hmph.

Why Did You Wear That: Stopping Short

By |April 3rd, 2012|Why Did You Wear That?|

celebrities crop topsThis past weekend, three of Tinsletown’s loveliest ladies were all seen sporting a little bit of bare midriff while walking the red (err… orange?) carpet.  This bit of belly is different from the crop tops of a couple summers past.  It’s not so much belly button as it is rib cage.  It’s the teeniest little peek-a-boo of skin that is both sexy and playful.  It’s less Christina Aguilera Genie in a Bottle and a bit more Gidget Goes Hawaiian.  And for anyone who was ever a bit self conscious about showing some torso, don’t worry.  This is much more wearable and will keep that fearsome FUPA under wraps.

Dolce & Gabbana Chili Pepper Print Cotton Bustier, $1000, 5. MinkPink Support Group Bustier, $35, 6. Mara Hoffman Embroidered Bustier Top, $207, 7. Topshop Petite Cutout Swan Bralet, $52, 8. Smith Denim Bustier, $80, 9. Free People Kiki Top, $78, 10. SO Dot Convertible Mini Bustier, $14.99

While some are referring to these as “bralettes” that’s not quite the right term.  (Did I not already school you in bralettes?).  I would consider these to be cropped bustier tops.  You’ll have much more luck when searching using those terms.  The trick to this look is pairing your teeny top with a high waisted skirt or slacks.  That way your outfit will read “le petite coquette” rather than “big dirty whore.”

Why Did You Wear That: Power to the People

By |January 11th, 2012|Red Carpet Recap, Why Did You Wear That?|

Alright, so I didn’t actually watch the People’s Choice Awards because well… as Gawker best summarized… they suck.  However, I did go ahead and check out what the ladies were wearing on the red carpet.  (I needed to see whether the gals of Hollywood had better taste in attire than America does in television/movies).  And much like my senior highschool yearbook signatures, there were a few recurring themes.  While my yearbook’s themes were how much statistics sucked, my indecision over which college I would attend, and “I’m so glad we became friends,” the trends of this year’s People’s Choice Awards were the new nude, ongoing green, and leather and lace.  I’m on board with all three of these trends… though my patience is starting to grow thin with green.  Check out some of the highlights below.

Kaley Cuoco, Jennifer Morrison in Oscar de la Renta, Lea Michele in Marchesa, Miley Cyrus in David Koma

Kristen Bell in Valentino, Ashley Greene in DKNY

Nina Dobrev in Elie Saab, Emma Stone in Gucci, Chloe Moretz in Proenza Schouler, Whitney Cummings

So, who did you think was best (and worst) dressed?  We are the “people” afterall.
