Smart is the New Pretty: Connection Failed

By |November 30th, 2011|Smart Is the New Pretty, WhyDid Wisdom|

We are so attached to our computers and smart phones, it seems nearly impossible to even get through a dinner without someone (or everyone) picking up his or her phone to text, Tweet, check-in, or share a photo.  It begs me to ask the question- have we become TOO social?  And have we forgotten what the word “social” really means?

Perhaps it’s time to put down our gadgets and make real life connections– with the people who are right in front of our faces.  Sure we are all “connected” but are we really “connecting” at all anymore?

Monday Mashup: MET Madness

By |May 3rd, 2011|Monday Mashup, Red Carpet Recap|

The gorgeous and well groomed came out to strut their stuff down the red carpet for the MET Ball this evening.  Where most red carpets are a bit of a bore, the Costume Gala always proves to be  more interesting seeing as it is thrown by the fashion elite (you don’t see Anna Wintour at the Grammy’s).  Each year, the gala is themed and this year was “Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty.”  Talk about one hell of a week for McQueen creative director, Sarah Burton.  A royal wedding followed by the year’s biggest fashion fete.

Above Tory Burch and Taylor Swift (in J. Mendel) slipped into their red carpet best and while both look absolutely beautiful (thanks for ditching that side swept ‘do, Taylor!) they look uncomfortably similar.  These dresses look like they could have been cut from the same cloth (oh yes, pun intended).

Tory and Taylor weren’t the only lookalikes this evening.  Quite a few starlets, and style icons were seen wearing similar get ups.

Ginnifer Goodwin in custom Top Shop, Barbara Walters

Too easy.

Rosie Huntington Whiteley in Burberry, Brooklyn Decker in Michael Kors

Two blonde supermodels, one color. I love Rosie Huntington Whitely.  She’s absolutely beautiful and I do love Brooklyn’s dress.  I just wish they could have swapped outfits.

Kate Hudson in Stella McCartney, Jessica Alba in Ralph Lauren Collection

No, this is not season 4 of Teen Mom Goes to Prom.  These are just two very pregnant actresses dressed in prom gowns for the gala.

Dakota Fanning in Valentino, Fergie in Marchesa

Speaking of teens… why is Fergie dressed in the same outfit as seventeen year old Dakota Fanning (who is very much age appropriately dressed)?

Sarah Jessica Parker in Alexander McQueen, Renee Zellweger in Carolina Herrera, Gwyneth Paltrow in Stella McCartney

Seems that slinky metallics were all the rage for the over 40 set.  I can’t help but think these dresses look awfully similar to Anne Hathaway at the Golden Globes

Freida Pinto in Chanel, Janelle Monae, Anna Dello Russo in Alexander McQueen and egg hat

Three perfect examples of why women should stick to womenswear and stay away from menswear.

Chrissy Teigen in Chris March, Beyonce in Emilio Pucci, Lucy Liu in Vionnet, Christina Hendricks in Carolina Herrera, Demi Moore in Prabal Gurung, Kirsten Dunst in Chanel

These six sexy black widows actually all ended up on my worst dressed list… just mere coincidence that they’re all in black.  Preparing for their fashion funeral perhaps?

Gisele Bunchden in Alexander McQueen, Dianna Agron in Michael Kors, Saorise Ronan in Rodarte, Kristen Stewart in Proenza Schouler, Emily Browning in Marc Jacobs

I’ve organized these ladies in red from “red hot” to “red not even kind of a little bit. uh uh.”

Diane Kruger in Jason Wu, Christina Ricci in Zac Posen, Bar Rafaeli, Ashley Greene in Donna Karan, Lily Aldridge in Ralph Lauren Collection, Leelee Sobieski in Vionnet

These six stunners got their red carpet looks right.  They are each wearing one of the above trends or themes that were so popular at this year’s MET, but they got it right rather than oh so wrong. These beauties were able to separate themselves from the savages.

Why Did You Wear That: Put Some Spring in Your Step

By |March 23rd, 2010|Why Did You Wear That?|

Finally the clouds have parted and Mother Nature is giving us a big sunshine filled kiss called spring. So what’s a girl to wear? We wondered the same thing as we attempted to get dressed for brunch this past weekend. We’ve stashed our winter coats and snow boots, but what shall we replace them with? Breaking down some of the big trends on the Spring 2010 runways:

Forward March– Looks like the military jacket will stick around another season. Swap one into your spring rotation for your updated warm weather outerwear.

068mMarc Jacobs

Mixed Bag– A fun trend on this season is the bold mixing and matching of prints. Done head to toe in one pattern or mixing complimentary patterns will give you a head turning look.

Everything’s Coming Up Roses– Floral patterns were running rampant on the runways.  Whether Laura Ashley’esque or Painterly prints, it’s time to water your girly seed and sport some florals for spring.

087mRalph Lauren

00210mCollette Dinnigan

Tit for Tat– Finally, something I’ve been doing for years is being validated on the runway. Sheer and sexy, models showed their underpinnings as much as their outerwear.

028mFendi

043mProenza Schouler

044mRochas

In the Nude– Neutrals were big on the runway. One in particular was nude. Get naked.

Peekaboo!– Another one of my favorite trends from the runways was the amount of cut out dresses being shown. They are very, very sexy in an unconventional way.

Ruffle Your Feathers– A fun and flirty alternative to fur? Feathers. Just don’t go overkill and end up looking like Big Bird. One feathered piece at a time.

A Shine of the Times– Recession? What recession? Shine and shimmer were all over the runways giving the luxe look. Shine isn’t just for evening. Dress up your everyday look with something shiny.

Speaking of shiny, get out your AmEx cards, girls. Adding a few key pieces can re-vamp what’s already going on in your closet.

Real People, Real Style: Excuse Me, Sheriff, There’s a New Marshall in Town.

By |April 27th, 2009|Real People Real Style|

This sexy on screen siren is so en fuego, I had to choose two photos of her.  Originally an East Coaster, she has now transplanted herself to the West Coast.

krys

Wearing: blouse- Club Monaco, shorts- The Limited, cardigan- vintage, gold lurex belt- vintage (courtesy of her mother, Becky Marshall- thanks, mom!)

krys2

Wearing:dashiki- Emanuel Ungaro (courtesy of one of her bff’s), wooden bangle- vintage (see, mixing designer with vintage is so chic).

Name: Krystal Marshall

Occupation: Actor

Hometown: Atlanta, Georgia

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and your bag was only big enough for 3 items, what would they be:

  1. A machete, which I would use to cut down trees to make a shelter, and then cut apart the bag (that the machete came in) to make a fierce leather swimsuit.
  2. A value size container of Aleve… because cramps will follow you anywhere- even a deserted island.
  3. A Venus razor.  I’d take apart the four razor blades and attach one to the end of a stick so I could spear fish, one to a smaller stick so I could chop fruit, one I’d use for beauty (i.e., shaving my legs/bikini area, arching my brows, and cutting split ends), and the last one is for emergencies. Like, in case I have to kill myself.

Favorite beauty product: Origins “Never a Dull Moment” exfoliating scrub, Rembrandt whitening trays

Style icon: MK Olsen

This summer, I can’t wait to wear: Rompers, jumpsuits, halters, and linen

Style tip for all the fashion degenerates: “Less is more.”  Oh, and if you think you look fat in something, chances are you probably do.

Best splurge (it was worth every penny): Marc Jacobs double breasted military coat

Trend you’d like to see die: Peep toe booties

Currently coveting:Erin Wasson’s wardrobe, body, and life.

Fun Fact:I plan to single handedly bring back full bottom underwear. I’m sick and tired of bikini briefs being shoved to the back of the drawer and only worn you-know-when. Enough!

Biggest personal fashion flop:At times, my cameltoe can be offensive.

Well, Miss Marshall, with those looks and all that spunk, I get the feeling we will be seeing a lot more of your face.  (And we’re pretty happy about that).

Real People, Real Style: Natty Style

By |April 9th, 2009|Real People Real Style|

In my 20-something years of life, I have learned that positive reinforcement is the best way to motivate people.  So, instead of just making fun of the fashion f*ck ups, I’ve decided to praise those of you who are making the world a prettier place… one outfit at a time.

We found this blonde bombshell right here in Manhattan.

natalie

Name: Natalie Decleve

Occupation: PR and Events Manager, Kiki De Montparnasse

Hometown: Palo Alto, CA

Wearing: dress- 12th Street by Cynthia Vincent, bag- vintage Dior (remember what I told you about vintage bags being cool?), shoes- Michael Kors Collection (sorry, can’t really see them, but they were divine), bangle- Forever 21, necklace- vintage, ring- rando no name designer from a boutique in Hoboken

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and your bag was only big enough for 3 items, what would they be: My super soft and slouchy Inhabit cashmere sweater (hey you didn’t say it was a tropical island…), my subscription to Bazaar (can I do that?), a box of French macaroons.

Favorite beauty product: L’artisan Parfumeur, Poivre Piquant perfume

Style icon: Kate Moss

This summer, I can’t wait to wear: my bright turquoise Calypso linen mu-mu and destroyed denim (not together, obvi!)

Style tip for all the fashion degenerates: If you don’t feel confident wearing it, don’t.

Best splurge (it was worth every penny): Balenciaga motorcycle bag in grey –  the older it gets, the cooler it looks.

Trend you’d like to see die: One shouldered anything – why is it still happening?! WHY?! Oh- and Marc Jacobs. Just in general. Like I say after every season’s show: The Emperor’s New Clothes…

Currently coveting: Miu Miu Nappa bag in nude leather… ahh I’m obsessed!

And we are obsessed with you, Ms. Decleve.  Well done.
