Speaking of the 90’s, the one closet staple other than an oversize flannel was the babydoll dress. The bodycon dress’s polar opposite, the babydoll allows for a bit more wiggle room with a silhouette that barely skims the body. This style is especially flattering on boyish shapes because there’s just something strange about big breasts in a babydoll dress. So, whether you’re a darling Donna, cocaine Kelly, or bitchy Brenda, lace up your Dr. Martens and put on your favorite floral babydoll dress.
Speaking of one pieces… this week let’s ditch the frocks for something less formal. While a onesie can still be dressed up for a night out on the town, sometimes a gal needs a little coverage of the crotchal region. Maybe you’ll be tackling the new Citi Bikes, or perhaps there are high kicks in your future, in any case, a little bit of modesty goes a long way. What better way than in a jumpsuit or romper? (Answer: there is no better way).
Once a wizard of Waverly Place, Selena Gomez has ditched her Disney darling act as most recently showcased in the raunchy film, Spring Breakers. Sure she caught a temporary case of Bieber fever, but it seems Ms. Gomez is growing up and moving on. It’s alright, girl. We’ve all made mistakes. If we looked back at at my boyfriend at twenty, I’d be a little red faced too. Along with her dating and career choices, her style is also evolving and with her glossy locks, long legs, and girl next door (in your dreams) looks, she’s setting herself up to be a real red carpet darling. Not one to shy away from a bikini or midriff baring top (clearly, she spent two hours on the big screen in not much else), Gomez has captured the perfect mix between young woman and youthful age appropriateness- unlike some of her tween trainwreck graduates. To get Gomez’s enviable style, grab some key pieces below and start doing some sit ups, like right now.
Another one of my favorite “all in one” outfits is the jumpsuit; a very close cousin of the romper. While you may equate the jumpsuit to the disco queens of the 70’s or the Angela Bowers of the 80’s, the jumpsuit is actually being made quite current by the A-list of the red carpet. The jumpsuit started its reemergence last year, and I “jumped” right on that trend (couldn’t help it). This look can be both casual (see my favorite American Apparel version here) and incredibly glamorous (remember when Rose Byrne first wore one to the SAG Awards?). So, whether you choose to wear yours with flats for Sunday brunch or heels for Saturday night fever, this trend is sure to leave you looking anything but out of style.
Speaking of cutting things up. Another trend for summer that will most likely carry into fall is that of the cut out dress. Instead of the daring deep V or the slit all the way up to… designers have opted for the unexpected flash of flesh. This look is very specific, so let’s not get carried away with too much ventilation- though the impending heatwave may make it tempting. The look is a peek of skin, not “I was accosted by the cousin of Edward Scissorhands on the way to The Darby.” So embrace the trend, but not too tightly.
