WhyDid Wisdom: Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure

By |October 9th, 2014|WhyDid Wisdom|

susan g komen 3 day for cureAs of late I’ve been in a bit of an emotional tailspin.  All I want to do is sleep, eat carbs, and speak only to Smitty or my mom.  Some would reason this is merely a natural feeling with the impending doom that is winter on its way, but I haven’t even been to Pilates in two weeks, which is basically unheard of, so you know something’s up.  You may have even noticed my sluggish blog posts and somewhat infrequent social media presence indicative of my mood.  My father often refers to this behavior as “going dark.”  I don’t know precisely what’s throwing me off, perhaps Mercury in retrograde, but I do know that wallowing in it won’t help.

One of the best ways to get out of a major mood slump is to stop obsessing about yourself and your own problems and find ways in which you can help others.  Seeing as October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I couldn’t think of a better cause to get involved with.  I have been fortunate enough to not have been affected personally by breast cancer (knock on wood), but I have breasts and I have a lot of best friends and women in my life who also have breasts.  As mentioned yesterday, one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime and that’s not a statistic to take lightly.

Every year, one of my very best friends, Katie (you may recognize her from her playlists and general craftiness), walks in the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure and she does it with such spirit, fun, and flair that it hardly looks like volunteer work at all.  Now, this is a woman who is always the first person to help somebody out.  I can attest to this as she was on an airplane from Florida to California to help me move back to the Big Apple the moment she heard my decision.  If anyone knows what it means to be selfless it’s Katie and that is why I’m joining her this year on her three day walk for Susan G. Komen on November 21-23 in San Diego, California.

Please help me raise funds as well as awareness for Breast Cancer by donating on my personal page (net proceeds go to research, scientific programs, and community based breast health and education programs for women and men facing breast cancer) and read more about ways you can get involved (like joining the walk as well!).  You’re the breast!

Help me reach my goal for the Susan G. Komen 3-Day

Why Did You Wear That: Post Traumatic Stress, or Lack Thereof

By |December 5th, 2013|Personal Style, Why Did You Wear That?|

Kirsten SmithSpeaking of evolution, it’s amazing what a difference a year can make.  Cliché?  Yes.  True?  Also yes.  After having scraped myself from my father’s couch and moving back to New York last year, I was ready to put my shattered life back together piece by painful piece.  I had moved back to my old neighborhood (literally across the street from my old apartment), reconnected with my New York friends who hadn’t fled the city for life in suburban wedded bliss, and put my feelers out for new career opportunities and love interests- though only half heartedly on the latter.

I hadn’t been back to California since leaving that last time.  I mean, it’s a long flight, plus I wasn’t sure how I’d feel  about being back there.  However, my dad was long overdue for a visit and the way the weather was looking on the east coast, I was happy to suffer through a five hour flight for a stint in the sunshine.  Upon landing in LA, I immediately felt a bittersweet nostalgia.  Driving through familiar streets in Silicon Valley, I felt every familiarity and the memories of my past came creeping back. Many experts now recommend me to use these Delta 8 disposable vape pens to keep those thoughts in check.

Kirsten SmithFortunately, I have a friend who is the kind of friend everyone should wish for.  She’s the “ride or die” type and the moment she got my sobbing phone call that I would be moving out of the home I shared with my ex, she was quite literally on a plane to come and help with the heavy lifting and to lift my heavy heart.  Her name is Katie and you may remember her.  Upon arriving at said residence, my ex had been so “kind” as to have already packed all of my belongings (well, everything he didn’t try and pilfer) and arrange them conveniently at the front door.  Talk about adding insult to injury.  But on the brightside, this gave us more time to spend together chatting rather than packing.  Katie having never done so, we hopped in her rental and took a ride down the PCH.  Remembering a must see recommendation from a pal Katie had made on the plane (she’s always making friends), we stopped somewhere along Big Sur at a place called Post Ranch Inn where we dined while taking in the views at Sierra Mar.  The views are quite literally breathtaking and those with acrophobia may want to refrain from venturing out onto the balconies.  I was so happy to be in such beautiful surroundings with my beautiful friend, but halfway through my second glass of prosecco, I broke down into tears.

kirsten smithI wanted to share this place with people who love me unconditionally and make new memories that were joyful not jaded.  My middle brother, Andy and my dad are two men I know I can always count on besides Smitty and I wanted to take them somewhere I loved.  We hopped in Dick’s tiny sportscar (I generously relinquished shotgun and crammed myself into the backseat) and off we went down the windy PCH on our way back to Post Ranch Inn, stopping intermittently to snap photos at scenic overlooks.  Ironically enough, we were seated at the exact same table where Katie and I sat the year before.  This year, however, I didn’t cry into my garden green salad.  I guess that’s the thing about bad memories, sometimes you just have to face them, make new ones, and move on.

WhyDid Wisdom: Hang in There

By |April 11th, 2012|WhyDid Wisdom|

designer closetA lot of you are probably doing some spring cleaning of your closets and while that is all good and fine (actually it’s applaudable), why not really give your closet a full fledged makeover?  Having an organized closet is not just about purging it of the old and re-hanging what’s left behind shape and color.  (If you need a refresher course in the art of closet cleaning, click right here).

Instead of just re-organizing what you’ve got, why don’t you go ahead and give your beloved closet a little extra aesthetic appeal?  Take a look at your closet.  Look at your hangers.  Seriously, look.  There are plastic ones, mismatched ones, clippy ones and even –gasp– wire ones.  You love your clothes so much, why on Earth don’t you treat them better?  They deserve a little respect, no?  I mean the top that accents your delicate cleavage without making you look like a tart.  The trousers that perfectly drape over your toned behind.  Your clothes are working hard to make you look good.  Show them some love, goddammit.

Recently, my best pal, Katie, decided to give her closet a mini overhaul and I convinced her that she NEEDED to make the switch to velvet hangers in the process.  These hangers are not new to the market, but if you haven’t heard about them or you have yet to convert… now’s the time to do so.  Not only do they take up (literally) half as much space, they keep all your strappy straps stuck on and they just look a lot nicer.  Proof:

Why Did You Eat That: Candy Coated

By |December 12th, 2011|Recipes, Why Did You Eat That?|

For upcoming holiday parties, what’s better than a candy coated creation that can not only act as a centerpiece, but also as a party favor?  That’s right.  Absolutely nothing.  Precisely the reason why my lovely lady friend, Katie (who also guest DJ’s from time to time), whipped up some beautiful and festive candy apples for a party she was hosting.  (Is there anything this girl can’t do?).  Anyway, I was lucky enough to witness (and document) her working her wonders in the kitchen and have for you the secrets to creating the prettiest candy apples ever.  This isn’t rocket science, BUT it is a little tricky so follow directions closely and be sure to be patient (it’s a virtue, afterall).

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 1/2 cup light corn syrup
  • 1/2 teaspoon red food coloring
  • Wax paper
  • Candy thermometer
  • 6 medium apples (we used Granny Smith)
  • Wooden dowels

Directions:

  1. Line a baking sheet with wax paper.
  2. Wash apples, remove stems, insert wooden dowels.

  3. In a medium heavy-bottomed saucepan, combine sugar, 3/4 cup water, corn syrup, and food coloring.
  4.  Bring to a boil over high heat; reduce heat to medium-high. Insert candy thermometer and continue to boil until temperature reaches between degrees 310 degrees (about 20 minutes).

  5. When mixture reaches 310 degrees, immediately remove from heat. Working quickly (seriously), dip apples in sugar mixture until completely coated. Transfer to prepared baking sheet; allow to cool.

How d’ya like them apples?  As a disclaimer, I have to suggest that you don’t actually bite into these apples.  You will crack your teeth… and that’s not the kinda look you’re probably going for.

Weekend Playlist: Katie Don’t Play That

By |November 12th, 2011|Weekend Playlist|

When I tire of listening to the same playlist over and over and over…. and.  Well, you see where I’m headed.  I turn to my dear friend, Katie (who, if you will recall, guest “dj’ed” before).  She poo poo’s my Christina and Bruno and pulls me out from my teenage pop abyss.  I mean, that’s what friends are for, right?  Listen, Katie knows her music– so, if anyone’s looking for an A&R, this is the girl.  Anyway, I asked Katie to please, please, please make me a playlist that wouldn’t make someone over the age of 16 cringe and she put together this little party:

Oh, Katie… just climbing her way to the top of the charts.
