Why Did You Wear That: Golden Girls

I stayed up putting this together until 4am last night… which led me to sleep in this morning, throwing off my entire schedule… and that’s why you’ve had to wait so long to hear what I’m sure you’ve been fidgeting in your seat hoping all day long to hear: my opinion.

And so below you’ll find my picks for the best, the worst, and the biggest trends that were seen on the red carpet from last night’s Golden Globes. It’s funny how different some of these dresses look in photographs as opposed to watching them live on TV. The colors look different, there’s no movement, and a little bit of the magic is sucked out of them. While gathering these snaps, I started to question my original picks, but then decided to go with the dresses that made me grin from the get go.

Last night’s show was all about the women of Hollywood and they certainly dressed the part. This is the first time in a long time where I actually had a hard time whittling down my choices and debating on how much to include in my recap. But enough about me, let’s get down to business.

The Best:

Emily Blunt in Michael Kors, Naomi Watts in Zac Posen, Julianne Moore in Tom Ford

The Worst:

Sienna Miller in Erderm, Lucy Liu in Carolina Herrera, Halle Berry in Atelier Versace

And with every award show, there tends to be a trend or two that rules the red carpet. This year, without a doubt, it was the presence of black. At one point, I was left scratching my head wondering if this show was being held in Los Angeles or New York. Contrary to the belief that black is boring, the ladies found ways to wear this staple that were the least bit dull.

Sprinkled in with basic black were pops of tangerine, bits of blush, and lots of sparkle. Here are some trends that stood out and can probably expect to see more of during upcoming award shows.

Would You Wednesday: I See Through You

This past Monday, the Super Bowl of fashion, the Met Gala happened in New York City. As any good fashionista knows, you better arrive dressed to impress or risk being on every news media outlet’s worst dressed list. And deck themselves out is precisely what this year’s A-list did. While there are always a few stand out trends (like Wintour in white and a smattering of sunshine-y yellow), the one trend that seemed to catch everyone’s eye… and breath… was the see through gowns showing off some skin and some seriously gorgeous gams.

To some, this excess of skin may be offensive, but I personally have no problem with it… so long as it’s done with taste rather than haste. I grew up in a kind of “naked house” (it was mostly me and mom… so there was no need for modesty). I’d wear a tissue if I could get away with it and as a matter of fact, I have a dress that I reference as the “tissue dress.” I get it though, one can take a little bit of chic cheekiness and turn it into just a lot of cheek. And while I’m not put off by the female body, some people just don’t appreciate some good side boob and are abhorred by the mere trace of a nipple.

Monday Mashup: The More the Mara-ier

Rooney Mara in Givenchy and Kate Mara in Jack Guisso Couture

Two more of Hollywood’s leading ladies who deserve a little red carpet extra credit are the sisters Mara. Kate Mara and little sis Rooney Mara both looked glam at last night’s Academy Awards, but I get the feeling if I hadn’t told you, you might not think them to be related… even distantly. As Rooney has undergone quite the transformation from The Social Network to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, she appears to be her softer sister’s polar opposite. Great granddaughters of founders of both the New York Giants and Pittsburgh Steelers, it would seem to me that these siblings are familiar with a little friendly competition. So, let’s put these DNA sharing darlings’ red carpet looks up to a vote. Do you prefer the edgy modern look of Rooney or the romantic elegance of Kate?

Why Did You Wear That: What a SAG

To be honest… I was almost so uninspired that I didn’t even bother with a Red Carpet Recap for this year’s SAG Awards. While the dresses are a bit better than when they started this award season with the People’s Choice Awards, I’m still waiting to be wowed. Having just finished up the Paris couture shows, one would think there would have been a little bit more drama on the red carpet… On a positive note, there was nothing this time that truly offended me either… that much. As we all know, there are only so many designers to go around, so I will now present you with the good, the bad and the debatable (where you’ll be the judge of who wore which designer best).

The Good:

Alright ladies, it’s time to really step it up. I can’t sit through another boring awards ceremony if you’re not willing to wear something wow-worthy. I will pretend it didn’t even happen next time. Just remember what Rooney’s dad said… the Oscar’s are your Superbowl.

Allons-y! Pourquoi pas?

Speaking of Paris, why not be inspired by the magnificent city? I have never been, but in my head it’s the only city that might rival New York. There is just something, that je ne sais quoi if you will, that makes Paris so sexy, so chic. Maybe it’s the French women and their no frills beauty or the French’s ability to be both self entitled and nonchalant at the same time. Whatever it might be, I have always been intrigued by this magical city (the whole country to be quite honest) and some day I will “bon voyage” there.

Having studied French all through highschool (Spanish was full) and college, I still barely speak a lick (un petit peu). I even got Rosetta Stone a couple of years ago and swore that when I finished I would pack a bag and head on over. Somehow, that just didn’t happen, so I’m going to have to go with the “immersion theory” and just dive on in. I do, however, know how to say “window shopping” (leche vitrine). That’s gotta count for something, right?
