Why Did You Wear That: Seeing Red

By |September 22nd, 2014|Personal Style, Why Did You Wear That?|

fall trends 2014 sweater dressIt can be tricky trying to decide what color to wear with red.  When I was younger, I had an incredibly strong aversion to wearing black with red.  To me, it came off as a little cheap.  I don’t feel as strongly about it now as I did when I was sixteen, but I still prefer other options over basic black when accessorizing with bold red.  Well then, what options is one left with when black is eliminated?  You could opt for luggage colored brown, or even a soft taupe.  Another great option is grey (also a fall trend).  In this instance, I had forgotten I even had these deep oxblood Pour La Victoire boots hidden beneath my bed (that’s how we store shoes here in New York).  As soon as I’d wiped away the dust bunnies, I recalled that I also had a vintage bag from my mother that was of the same shade.  Once a complete faux pas and something only worn by women donning their Sunday best for morning mass, I threw caution to the wind and got wild by matching my shoes to my bag.  Another option right on trend would be to wear a leopard boot or carry a leopard clutch (thous in this instance, I’d opt for one or the other).  It may seem a little bit “The Nanny” but I actually believe despite what men say, that leopard is sort of a new neutral.  Besides, did Fran not get her man?

Speaking of my man and matching, Smitty celebrated his eighth birthday and one of his doting aunts was sweet enough to bestow him with his own scarlet sweater.  She pays attention to fall trends too.  Pretty much Smitty and I became this fall’s Justin and Britney, Katy and Riff Raff.  Sure, my sweater is just about the same size as Smitty’s and technically it’s just an oversized jumper as opposed to an official frock, but it’s not the first, nor will it be the last, time wherein I wear something not as it’s intended.

Weekend Playlist: 2013, We Out.

By |December 28th, 2013|Weekend Playlist|

miley cyrus destinys child nsync2013 was a very interesting (by interesting I mean coma inducing) year when it came to music in my humble opinion.  I am not, nor have I ever claimed to be a music expert, but if even I was bored, I can only imagine how audio afficianados must have felt.  All genres started to blend together just as the days of the week started to blend together for me.  Is it Tuesday night or Saturday morning?  Who cares?  A little Drake whining about his leftover Chinese food followed up with some Miley Cyrus soft porn will alleviate any confusion.  Just stick out your tongue, grab a leotard, and start twerking- you’ve got 2013 music covered.  It’s like Now That’s What I Call Music: 9 Billion.  Listen to this playlist til 2014, then let’s bury these songs like a time capsule not to be revisited until another decade has passed.

Werk, bitch.

Setting the Mood: Private Parts

By |December 23rd, 2013|Setting the Mood|

plaid uniform editorialThis time of year, especially around the holidays, plaid plays a very important role in winter wardrobing.   Personally?  I have a penchant for plaid.  I went to plenty of private schools, St. Michael’s, St. Edward’s, and Linsly and maybe that’s where my love of plaid began.  Many may beg to differ, but there’s nothing better than slamming the snooze button knowing that your outfit for school that day is predetermined, so you can afford a few more moments of shut eye.   Honestly, there’s not a lot better than a good school uniform.  For years, I was living out my very own Britney Spears Baby One More Time music video.  Not really sure how the boys (or teachers) concentrated with pretty young things clad in pleated plaid skirts, knee socks, button downs, and blazers.  The worst three years of my life were those spent in public school during my middle school years- not solely for the lack of uniform, because my closet actually quadrupled in size during that time.  I may be the only adolescent on record who begged to go back.  I’m pretty sure it appeared on my Christmas list two years running.  While I did finally get my way, I still wax poetic about inappropriately short plaid skirts (I found myself in the office on more than one occasion for figuring out new and inventive ways to chop off a few inches from mine) and all the iterations of legwear and platform penny loafers.  Fortunately, there are many ways that we can all relive our prep school pasts with grown up plaid pieces.

Weekend Playlist: I Love the 90’s…ish

By |January 12th, 2013|Weekend Playlist|

justin timberlake britney spears tlc destinys childSure, sure, Timberlake stole the headlines this week after “hinting” at the release of new music, but as giddy as that made us, let’s not forget all the other excitement happening for children of the 90’s.  I mean, Destiny’s Child reuniting for the Superbowl?  Britney Spears recording a new album?  A TLC reunion tour complete with hologram?

This is almost too much for me to handle.  It’s like Christmas came late this year.  To celebrate the return of the 90’s (and early 2000’s), I have compiled some of  the best early songs from our re-emerging artists.  I threw in a little Christina (because I love her) and Jessica Simpson (I know…) for good measure.  Do you have ANY idea what used to happen when “Genie in a Bottle” came on while I was cruising in my red Volkswagen Cabriolet?  It’s probably better that you don’t.

We’re ready.

Weekend Playlist: Party Like It’s 2013

By |December 30th, 2012|Weekend Playlist|

new years eve confettiSo, it’s Sunday… meaning this is technically the last bit of the “weekend,” but let’s be serious.  The stretch between Christmas and New Year’s is like one extended booze fueled, stay in your pajamas til 2pm and mom’s cooking weekend (not that that’s what I’m doing or anything).  Tomorrow is a little something called “New Year’s Eve” and the only thing more important than securing a midnight kiss and not running out of champagne is crafting the most perfect playlist.  The trick to a playlist is covering all your bases.  You don’t want to play what could be listened to on your local Top 40 station, but including a few “club bangers” so that white girls will be heard world round squealing to misogynistic rap lyrics is clutch.  Then you’ve got to toss in a few of those ironic throwbacks for all the “bruhs” to fist bump to when they recognize the intro.  Sprinkle a couple of classics in there to make grandma happy and you, my friend, have the ultimate party playlist.

Cheers, y’all.
