Why Did You Wear That: Shoe In

By |October 2nd, 2014|Why Did You Wear That?|

best fall bootsOnce you’ve procured all of this fall’s must have fashion trends, you’re going to need the shoes to accessorize with.  One of my greatest struggles in life besides fitted sheets and the mental battle between being rail thin or indulging in gnocchi, is putting together the perfect outfit only to realize I do not have the perfect shoes to complete it.  This has led to lots of late arrivals, pissed off friends, and missed appointments.  Pretty sure this complaint would fall under the hashtag of “first world problems.”  In any case, this fall you are going to want to round out your wardrobe with boyish brogues, combat boots, boots that go beyond the knee, statement booties in addition to basic black, and a pair of sneakers that thank heaven almighty do not include the word “wedge.”  Below find my picks for fall’s best footwear.

Friday Frocks: Mommy and Me

By |May 9th, 2014|Friday Frocks, Why Did You Wear That?|

pregnant celebsIn honor of Mother’s Day, this week’s frocks are dedicated to the beautiful babes with babies on board.  And while I’ve not been pregnant, through writing this post, I did learn how tough it is to find something to cover up the impending baby bump.  It would appear there are two basic approaches to dressing during pregnancy: loose and flowing empire waistlines or stretchy bodycon dresses.  Being pregnant doesn’t require you to dress in tents and awnings and by slipping into something slinky, you are owning that bump… as you should.

Why Did You Wear That: Spring 2014: Style Cheat Sheet

By |February 25th, 2014|Why Did You Wear That?|

snow flowerAlthough it was fifty degrees over the weekend and snow flurrying today, we really are in the home stretch of winter.  Just hang in there, pretty birds, relief is on the way.  While we wait for the last frost of the season to cease, let us refresh ourselves on the clothing that is just waiting to make itself quite comfortable in our closets come spring.  Since each fashion week presents collections a solid six months in advance of when we can actually get our greedy little hands on it, it’s easy to forget what we need to start scoping for and what to relegate to the back of our wardrobes for the time being.  The fashion elite may be a bit clairvoyant perhaps predicting the dreadfully long winter we’ve endured as the spring collections did not shy away from color, bold patterns, and plenty of shiny embellishment.  Though black and white were ever present, it’s time to drop the dull all black uniform and have a little bit of fun.

While florals are really nothing new for spring, this season’s are a bit bolder and less feminine incorporating the trend of black and white as well as darker tones as opposed to the predictable pastel colorways.  Speaking of which, Easter egg colors abound and are best done head to toe, but if that has you feeling apprehensive of emulating Great Aunt Ida, the presence of a pastel leather jacket or clutch will do the trick.

Along with bold graphics that will have even the biggest globetrotters giddy, art aficionados rejoice.  Patterns for spring give a nod to pop art using brights that make them downright framable.  Wearable art, if you will.

Embellishment was big and came in the form of fringe, 3D embellishments and gilded golds, bronze, and silver.  An alternative to shine in the form of straightforward metallics is presented in the option of iridescence.

And to those who attempted a croptop intervention on me… bad news: the croptop (which will live on through Fall 2014) is stronger than ever for spring.  Might I suggest enrolling in a Pilates class, like last week?  Though tops are shrinking bottoms get a bit of volume in the form of wide leg trousers and full skirts seen prevalently in the midi length.

Most notably to me was that all of the various trends seem to work together quite seamlessly and in some cases there’s quite a bit of overlap.  Full metallic skirts, crop tops with sheer panels, and boldy printed wide leg trousers make hitting a few trends at once a spring breeze.

Why Did or Why Don’t: Back(pack) for More

By |December 26th, 2013|Why Did or Why Don't?|

backpack style fashionEvery girl needs a bag within which she can lug around all kinds of things that a man would never fathom being necessary on a day to day basis.  We stow little items that may very well come in handy when handling an unaccounted for crisis.  You call them frivolous, we say functional.  It is the Girl Scout motto afterall, “Always be prepared.”

And with this 90’s resurgence it’s no wonder we are revisiting the backpack bonanza from last year.  This time, however, it seems just about every designer that’s ever played in the handbag arena has thrown his/her pack in the ring.  From Mr. Wang to MK and Ashley, there are backpacks crafted from studded leather to luxe leopard.  Take your pack—er, pick.  But will you be partaking in this trend?  Or is it something we should leave back in social studies class?

On the upside: they do look pretty cute and who doesn’t want yet another chance to channel Cher Horowitz?  It’s also great to just fling that baby on your shoulders and continue making overly dramatic hand gestures in conversation without that pesky handbag getting in the way.  However, have you ever tried retrieving something from your stylish sack while it’s still in place on your back?  Awkward.  Trust me, you won’t be going for your iPhone nearly as often(which, could be another one to add to the upside).  And along with looking like the teenage freak that you once were while trying to fetch a stick of Big Red from your satchel, backpacks pose as open invitations to pickpocketers, especially in a city like New York.

Why Did You Wear That: Fresh Coat

By |October 22nd, 2013|Why Did You Wear That?|

coatsThe only item more clutch to one’s closet than the perfect fall boots is the perfect fall coat.  Growing up in Florida, I was unfamiliar with inclement winter weather.  Boy, was I in for a rude awakening during my first northeastern snow storm.  This was when I took a crash course in dressing for the elements.  Never again would I be chilled to the bone without the appropriate outerwear.  Someone wise once told me that if you have a nice coat, nice bag, and nice shoes during the winter, it doesn’t really matter whether you’re wearing sweats underneath– no one will even see them.  I’m not encouraging that, but I certainly wouldn’t shame you for running to Starbucks in your jammies so long as you cover them accordingly.  While you should have one go to coat to cover all occasions, you’re going to need a couple more to fill in the wardrobe gaps.  Below are some essential styles that will keep you warm and looking cool.
