Why Did You Wear That: Wear the Rainbow

By |January 12th, 2012|Why Did You Wear That?|

When I walked into the fifth floor of Saks a couple of weeks ago, my eyes lit up as I saw a table of denim in almost every color in the rainbow.  I love jeans and making them in different colors is merely an excuse for me to buy more… cause I need a pair of lavender jeans, don’t I?  Right.  For a while denim has been clean, skinny, and dark (thank God, we’ve moved past that whole “distressed”, rhinestoned, whiskered phase).  We saw the emergence of red denim this past year, but it hasn’t been since Bongo jeans and snap crotch bodysuits that I’ve seen such a variety of saturated shades.  Have I dated myself?  No?  Cotempo Casuals, anyone?  Here’s a roundup of some of my favorite shades that I can’t wait to wear.

Top (L to R): AG Adriano Goldschmied The Stilt Cigarette Pants in Neon Yellow, $159, 7 for All Mankind Skinny Twill Jeans in Neon Yellow, $169, J Brand Skinny Twill Pants in Canary, $176 7 for All Mankind Gwenevere Skinny Jeans in Deep Canteloupe, $169,  Joe’s Colored Skinny Jeans in Nectar, $158 J Brand Skinny Twill Pants in Fraise, $176

Bottom (L to R): J Brand Skinny Twill Pants in St. Tropez, $176, AG Adriano Goldschmied The Stilt Cigarette Jeans in Highlighter Blue, $159, Joe’s Colored Skinny Jeans in French Blue, $158, Rag & Bone The Skinny Jeans in Royal, $1767 for All Mankind Skinny Twill Jeans in Light Purple, $169,  7 for All Mankind Skinny Twill Jeans in Neon Pink, $169

Now you’re pants can be as bright as you are.

Why Did You Wear That: Power to the People

By |January 11th, 2012|Red Carpet Recap, Why Did You Wear That?|

Alright, so I didn’t actually watch the People’s Choice Awards because well… as Gawker best summarized… they suck.  However, I did go ahead and check out what the ladies were wearing on the red carpet.  (I needed to see whether the gals of Hollywood had better taste in attire than America does in television/movies).  And much like my senior highschool yearbook signatures, there were a few recurring themes.  While my yearbook’s themes were how much statistics sucked, my indecision over which college I would attend, and “I’m so glad we became friends,” the trends of this year’s People’s Choice Awards were the new nude, ongoing green, and leather and lace.  I’m on board with all three of these trends… though my patience is starting to grow thin with green.  Check out some of the highlights below.

Kaley Cuoco, Jennifer Morrison in Oscar de la Renta, Lea Michele in Marchesa, Miley Cyrus in David Koma

Kristen Bell in Valentino, Ashley Greene in DKNY

Nina Dobrev in Elie Saab, Emma Stone in Gucci, Chloe Moretz in Proenza Schouler, Whitney Cummings

So, who did you think was best (and worst) dressed?  We are the “people” afterall.

Why Did You Wear That: Work It, Girl

By |January 9th, 2012|Look for Less, Why Did You Wear That?|

While some ladies may be those of leisure, others work hard for their money.  They’re smart, determined, dedicated, and want to look damn good while dominating a board room.  And while mama does work hard to bring home the bacon, she doesn’t want to put all that money right back into her work wardrobe.  So what’s a girl to do?  Shop smart!  There are plenty of work appropriate options that 1). won’t break the bank and, 2). won’t raise any eyebrows.  The key to a fabulous work wardrobe is investing in smart separates that can be mixed, matched, and accessorized to provide a plethora of early morning options.  Here are three outfits all under $200 that will have you looking like (and making) a million.

Let’s break down the numbers:

BB Dakota Audry Twill Dress, $79.99 Mossimo Palma Pumps, $29.99 + Marc by Marc Jacobs Metallics Packables Shopper, $58 = $167.98

Jack by BB Dakota Nadine Top, $52 My Favorite Things Pencil Skirt, $79.90 + Nine West Escher Pumps, $59.99 = $191.98

BB Dakota Hadley Pants, $59.99 Staring at Stars Chiffon Button Down Shirt, $24.99 + DV by Dolce Vita Boston Pumps, $72.99 = $157.97

Now that’s what I call retail math.

Friday Frocks: Fade to Black

By |January 6th, 2012|Friday Frocks, Why Did You Wear That?|

Well, January is in full swing and after the holidays and festivities have wound down, it may just feel like one big ‘ol hangover.  You’ve sequined and accessorized and now you probably just want to lay low.  Bling feels so blah and glitter makes you want to gag.  That’s where the good ol’ LBD comes into play.  Consider it your lime sorbet between appetizer and entree.  The LBD is a great palate cleanser to hold you over between holiday and spring.  Its uses are endless and it doesn’t have to be boring.  Cutouts, texture, and unexpected details are what make an LBD a totally stylish staple.  Dress it up, dress it down.  Take it from day to night.  You really never can go wrong when you’re back in black.

1. A.L.C. Sienna Stretch Leather Dress, $1,195, 2. Valentino R.E.D. Black Crystal Embellished Dress, $682, 3.  Black Halo Jackie O Off the Shoulder Dress, $375 , 4. Marni Asymmetric Crepe Dress, $346, 5. Lamixx Cold Shoulder Dress, $46, 6. DKNY Black Dress with Round Collar, $315 , 7. Elizabeth and James Rebecca Silk Chiffon Dress, $116.80, 8. Miss Selfridge Black Elastic Back Dress, $55, 9. bebe Leatherette Paillette Dress, $129, 10. Alice + Olivia Leather and Tulle Dress, $595

Why Did You Wear That: NY State of Mind

By |January 3rd, 2012|Personal Style, Why Did You Wear That?|

Nothing is stranger than returning to the city that you love as a tourist.  This past weekend, I was back in the Big Apple, but no longer as a resident of the best city in the world.  Though I did stay at The Standard only a stone’s throw away from my last apartment, it was so peculiar to be just another person visiting New York City.  I haven’t even been gone an entire year (I gave up my apartment last January), but things have already changed (there’s now a Sephora on the corner of 13th and 9th.  Do you KNOW how much better this would have made my life?).

As bittersweet as my visit was, I still love New York City unlike another other city.  There is something so magical, so indescribable, that one must experience it to truly understand it.  While it’s not for everyone, the people who it affects, will be affected forever.  There is just something that gets under your skin and you’ll never ever be able to shake it.  As much as you may tire of the hustle, bustle, and constant struggle, you’d miss it if you were to be transplanted elsewhere.  I can certainly attest to that.

So when spending the afternoon at a ballet in the city, what else should one don but basic black?  Now, we all know that black is the New York uniform, but how do you do it without being boring?  Try mixing different textures to add depth and definition.  Mix leather or coated denim with something sheer, shiny accessories and a fishtail braid for a truly city chic look.

1. Theyskens’ Theory Black Button Down Sheer Blouse, $385, 2. 7 For All Mankind The Skinny in Black Shiny Featherweight, $169, 3. J Weber Etched Starburst Locket, $475, 4. Alex & Ani Nile Expandable Wire Bangles, $158, 5. Steve Madden Outrrage Black Leather Bootie, $189.95

It’s up to you New York…
