Friday Frocks: Fit for a Princess

By |January 20th, 2012|Friday Frocks, Why Did You Wear That?|

princess tiaraPerhaps none of us will ever marry a “real” prince and become “real” life princesses like Kate, but there’s no reason we shouldn’t dress and feel like a princess.  Especially on say, I don’t know, your birthday?  Every princess needs a gown to celebrate her special day.  That’s really one of our only obligations.  Something special.  Something shimmery.  Something so jaw droppingly gorgeous you couldn’t help but get noticed.  Now, that’s what I call a birthday dress.  This edition of Friday Frocks is not what one might call “budget friendly,” but it sure is pretty.  A girl can dream, right?

1. Christopher Kane Alexa Sequined Tulle Dress, $6,720, 2. Alexander McQueen Silk Chiffon Bustier Gown, $3,295, 3. Jenny Packham Nude Beaded Gown, $3,835, 4. Rachel Gilbert Milio Sequined Tulle Gown, $1,735, 5. Oscar de la Renta Latticework Fringed Cocktail Dress, $6,550, 6. Vivienne Westwood Gold Label Savannah Sequined Net Gown, $11,115, 7. Thomas Wylde Supernatural Leopard Print Silk Chiffon Gown, $1,835, 8. Jenny Packham Nude Embellished Shoulder Lace Dress, $3,420, 9. Monique Lhuillier Strapless Tulle Chantilly Lace Gown, $9,490, 10. Matthew Williamson Feather and Crystal Embellished Lace Dress, $6,525

Why Did You Wear That: Full House

By |January 18th, 2012|Why Did You Wear That?|

They say what goes around comes around… and they weren’t lying.  I’m about to date myself here by saying that I really enjoy watching re-runs of Full House.  It brings me back to a happy place.  I’m really about to date myself (and sound like a fuddy duddy) by saying, they don’t make TV shows like they used to.

While watching an episode of Full House one lazy mid morning… it was the one where Stephanie goes to junior high and doesn’t really fit but tries to make friends by smoking… I looked at her friend Mickey and thought, “Wow, I like what she’s wearing.”  Sure, sure, it seems strange to want to wear the same thing as a girl in junior high during the 90’s, but 1. they say the cycle or recycled trends is about 20 years, and 2. Mickey is probably around my age by now, no?

Yeah, that’s right.  It’s just about time the 90’s are come back into fashion.  Um, Doc Martens and flannel shirts anyone?  Hey, it’s better than the 80’s.

1.  Cabela’s Portugese Flannel Long Sleeve Shirt, $24.99, 2. Free People 5 Pocket Denim Cut Offs, $68, 3. Junk Food T Rex Hot Love Baseball Raglan Tee, $43.99, 4. Michelle Roy Chain Friendship Bracelet, $62, 5. Dr. Martens 1460 in Black/Greasy, $110, 6. Foot Traffic Cable Knit Over the Knee Socks, $9

How rude.

Monday Mashup: Give Me Some Lip

By |January 16th, 2012|Monday Mashup, Red Carpet Recap|

Natalie Portman in custom Lanvin, Angelina Jolie in Atelier Versace

Okay, let me just start off by saying that both Natalie and Angelina are two of the most beautiful women on the planet (let alone the red carpet), so this is, by no means, a personal attack or me “being a hater.” That said, I really disliked both of their gowns at last night’s Golden Globe Awards. While they both wore different colors, and slightly different necklines, they both had a little lip of red on their gowns. To me, these both look like bad Valentine’s Day cards, or perhaps boxes of cheap drugstore chocolates. Natalie is beyond petite and this dress is just too much for her tiny frame. I also love the mixing of pink and red (as shown here), but in this instance, it just does not work.

Speaking of tiny, Angelina has never looked more thin (not a compliment). I do not care for the matchy matchy or her “lip,” lips, bag, (and I assume shoes). To me, this dress does not look modern at all. It reminds me of something Aunt Gertrude once wore to a country club social. I applaud her for stepping out of her comfort zone, but hope that she does not get too comfortable in this zone either.

While my opinion is probably not popular with some of you (weird)… I hope at least a few of you are in agreement. So, I’m wondering, whose “lip” do you love?

Kiss off.

Why Did You Wear That: Let Me Blow Your Mind

By |January 15th, 2012|Red Carpet Recap, Why Did You Wear That?|

Emma Stone in Lanvin, Reese Witherspoon in Zac Posen

I sort of have a love/hate relationship with award shows.  I always go into them hoping to see some of  Tinseltown’s most gorgeous gals wearing dresses that I can only dream of, but am left feeling ticked off about the stupid things that these ladies decided to don instead.  Another thing that really irks me is the sort of unspoken rule that you “must love” so and so’s dress because, well, she’s so and so!  It’s The Emperor’s New Clothes and I’m not buying it.  Before I even had a chance to tune in, my Twitter feed was blowing up with “ANGIE ANGIE ANGIE” and “REESE REESE REESE.”  So, I’m gonna go ahead and say it:  I didn’t like it.  Either one.

This year’s Golden Globes wasn’t all bad:  there were heartfelt speeches, good laughs, and some serious trends that you need to pay attention to:

  1. You need a headband.
  2. You need red lips.
  3. You need to invest in some Spanx for the sexy mermaid silhouettes that dominated.
  4. You need to stop using self tanner.  (I hope it was just the lighting or maybe a bad feed- but wow, was Hollywood orange!).

Here are my favorite looks from this year’s red carpet:
Charlize Theron in Dior, Nicole Kidman in Versace, Jessica Alba in Gucci Claire Danes in J. Mendel, Salma Hayek in Gucci, Evan Rachel Wood in Gucci

There were a few other honorable mentions by Shailene Woodley (Marchesa), Julie Bowen (Reem Acra), and Elle MacPhereson (Zac Posen), but again… nothing that blew. my. mind.  I hope this was just the ladies warming up for the rest of award season.  With access to the best designers and stylists in the world… I expect a little more.

Now hit the showers.

Friday Frocks: Life’s a Beach

By |January 13th, 2012|Friday Frocks, Why Did You Wear That?|

Can you pass me the SPF, please?  Oh… right.  It’s snowing here.  That means a couple of things.  1. It’s time for me to go home (to California).  2. It’s also time to transport myself (mentally) to a place with warm breezes, cool cocktails, and soft white sand.  How does one do that you ask?  Well, first of all, whip yourself up a strawberry daiquiri, put on some Bob Marley, and then peruse these vacation worthy frocks.  After you’ve convinced yourself you’re somewhere warm, head over to Jet Setter and start booking your next exotic getaway.

1. Sass & Bide Pick N’ Mix Embroidered Strapless Dress, $795, 2. Zimmermann Contrast Halter Dress, $277.20, 3. Issa Short Kimono Dress, $595, 4. Elizabeth and James Paloma Dress, $345, 5. Mara Hoffman King Tut Maxi Dress, $238, 6. M by Missoni Black and Magenta Multicolor Sleeveless Dress, $665, 7. Milly Gustavia Dip Dyed Maxi Dress, $595, 8. Naven Bombshell Dress with Shirring, $345, 9. Halston Heritage Halter Gown, $645, 10. French Connection Multi Jag Stripe Dress, $128

Bon voyage.
