Beauty Buzz: Squeaky Clean

By |November 4th, 2010|Beauty Buzz|

We all have some trouble spots on our skin from time to time. Whether it be that “time of the month” or just stress, no one likes a blemish stealing the show. Sometimes it seems no matter what spot treatments or face wash we use, our skin just doesn’t get clean! This may be old news to some but Clarisonic makes a true skin miracle worker. Yes, they are the same people who brought you sonic toothbrushes and they  have figured out how to harness that technology to work wonders for your flesh.

Leaving a drippy, damp washcloth hanging around your bathroom is a) unattractive and b) unsanitary (mold anyone?). Using Clarisonic with your daily facial cleanser removes six times as much dirt, oil, and makeup as manual cleaning. Not only that, it increases your skin’s ability to absorb all the fancy lotions and potions you use after washing your face making a washcloth a thing of the past.

The trick is to be sure to use the correct brushes for your skin type (if you have sensitive skin, use the sensitive brush, etc.). And just like all good things, you can overdo it.  While it is a bit pricey, there is a great ROI (return on investment- see I was paying attention in class). Your skin will thank you for it.

Beauty Buzz: A Hair Raising Experience

By |September 30th, 2010|Beauty Buzz|

bad-hair-day

I’ve gotten a little poll crazy today (and no, not POLE crazy like the girls of Scores). It seems the ladies of tinseltown have gone a little lock crazy changing their hair color, chopping off length, and well, just looking a little crazy. Behold…

UGH. Katherine Heigl. What the eff? What happened? Something bad? Normally she has such luscious locks but, this looks more like Cabbage Patch Hair! In this photo, she looks unrecognizable to me.

After recently celebrating a birthday, newlywed Hilary Duff is photographed here leaving the hair salon and sporting a new hue. Personally? I love it. I think it’s a really flattering color on her. Lookin’ good, Duff.

Here’s Harry Potter’s Emma Watson making her way to class at Brown sporting some noticeably shorter hair. Um… K. Stew, I don’t think you have anything to worry about. Her hair is even shorter than R. Patz’s.

Beauty Buzz: Moody Nudes

Boy, do I love a black nail, but I’m kind of tiring of seeing girls wear it in an attempt to be “edgy” or “vampy.” My bf bought me an amazing shade by OPI for Sephora called “Never Enough Shoes.” It’s mixture of black lacquer with a sprinkle of glitter (double win in my book), but when I bore of looking like all the rest of you, I will most certainly switch to these muted nude tones from Chanel:

So, if you want to stand out in the loud crowd of onyx tips, brush on on these muted colors and just … shut. up.

WhyDid Wisdom: Just Breathe

With our crazy social schedules and busy lives, sometimes we forget to do something very, very important: Breathe. Not only do I mean this literally, but also quite figuratively.

Go commando: This may sound kind of gross, but it’s one of those necessities. It is good to sleep in the buff sometimes or with a nighty only. Your little girl down below needs fresh air too. Wearing tight clothing and thong underwear can cause discomfort and even bacterial infections. If you’re feeling a little too modest going commando, swap out your normal panties for a pair of cotton bikinis.

Show me some skin: Bad skin is cyclical. We get a breakout and feel the need to cover it up. By covering it up, we clog our skin… causing more breakouts. During the week, why not give your skin a break? Wash, moisturize, add a little cheek stain, mascara, and lip gloss and let that beautiful skin show.

Stop wining: Gosh, who doesn’t love a good glass of wine? Well, apparently the trick to really enjoying a great glass of wine is letting it breath. By allowing your wine to mingle with the air, the aroma will grow stronger and the flavors will become more obvious. There’s more to a great glass of wine than just uncorking the bottle.

Breathing room: At times, we can have emotional overload. Not all relationships are perfect. So there are times when instead of fighting it out, it’s best to give it some space and let it air out before delving back in. A little time away often does the trick.

I can see it in your eyes: If you are like the majority of the population and wear contact lenses, you also probably are cramping your eyeballs’ style. Every once in a while (read: two times a week) you should opt for your spectacles in order to give your peepers a rest.

This little piggy went home: Just like your eyes, sometimes your feet need a rest as well. Giving your tootsies a little breathing room can prevent any sort of stench or fungal diseases. Swap out your sneaks or your closed toe shoes for something with a bit of air.

Just breathe.

Beauty Buzz: Check Those Bags, Girl

By |August 12th, 2010|Beauty Buzz|

Ugh. It’s a rough world out there, ladies. Between all of our hard work and hard partying, at times we start to look a little “tired.” When we miss out on sleep and relaxation, one of the first places it starts to show is our eyes.

So, here’s the bad news… eye bags are hereditary and come along with the aging process. There is a certain amount of fat stored under the eye area and as we age, the ligaments and skin get looser around the eye and that pushes the fat forward creating a “bag.” Lack of sleep, poor diet (high in sodium), and lack of exercise can speed up the occurrence of bags. Allergy and sinus problems can also exacerbate eye baggage.

The good news? There are some things you can do to make bags appear smaller.

  • Placing cold tea bags, cucumbers, or a cold spoon on the area all work. It has to do mostly with the cold rather than the object. Green tea bags seem to work the best because they contain EGCG which is a natural anti inflammatory.
  • Using Preparation H around the eye area will also provide a temporary fix. Just be very careful not to get it into your eyes!
  • Injectables like Restylane and Juvederm are also used to treat bags. This is for a much longer lasting result.
  • Last resort with the most lasting results is an eye lift.
  • In the meantime, a great under eye concealer and highlighter will help hide those pesky bags.
