Beauty Buzz: Stay Put

By |October 4th, 2012|Beauty Buzz|

kiss on a napkinLast week I went ahead and decided to take some of my own advice (for once) by taking fall’s big beauty trend, wine lips, for a test drive.  I spent a solid twenty minutes perusing my local Sephora (complete with live DJ) looking for the perfect shade of wine lipstick for my pout.  I went from Buxom to YSL to NARS… There’s gotta be a better way than testing on the back of my hand, right?  Anyway, fifteen shades later and I decided on one from Makeup Forever

wine lipstickOh, whoops.  Shall we just say that shade #13 (Purple) was not exactly the look I had been going for?  I know I joke that my new darker locks are a bit goth, but it’s a bit early for Halloween.  There was no way in the world I was going to head out on the town looking like Marilyn Manson.  So, I attempted to wipe off my less than beautiful mistake.   Ruh roh.  This lip lacquer wasn’t budging.  It took a couple of makeup wipes and a pinch of patience before I was able to get this goop gone.

Had this shade been one that worked for me, I would have been ecstatic.  Finally a product that does what it says.  I’m telling you, this lipstick would have made it through a six course dinner, serious makeout sesh, or an entire evening of karaoke.  So, let’s just call it a happy accident.  I may have gotten the wrong shade, but I certainly will be swapping it out for a more flattering lipcolor sure to last me through the evening… and maybe even til morning.

WhyDid or WhyDon’t?: Cut the Cord…

By |October 3rd, 2012|Why Did or Why Don't?|

corduroy bearWhen I think about corduroy, typically Birkenstocks and granola bars come to mind.  It’s been a while since corduroy has been en vogue (though that hasn’t stopped the fine folks of Northern California), but it would seem this fall, the textured textile has made its way back into top boutiques and fashion forward brands fall offerings.

And while wide wale cords sound anything but appealing, I’ve gotta admit… this season’s versions have really grown on me.  In slim cuts and updated colors they look more modern than those of our American Eagle wide legged past.  And what’s better than finally being able to combine fashion and function when the fahrenheit starts to dip?

Why Did You Wear That: Holy Moly!

fall trend 2012 cross jewelry

I don’t know what you did this past weekend (and it’s really none of my business), but maybe you’re feeling the need for a little repentance.  Fortunately for you, one of fall’s big jewelry trends may help ward off any unwelcome evil.  That’s right, the return of the rosary (or the cross) was shown on many of the runways. Paired perfectly with this fall’s luxurious leathers, velvets, crimsons, and blacks, the addition of this simplistic accessory is the perfect companion for a truly rocker ready look.  Opt for a long singular pendant, layer on in different lengths, or wrap around your wrists.  I’m not saying it’s going to replace praying in a pew, but it certainly can’t hurt.

Setting the Mood: Sweater Weather

By |October 1st, 2012|Setting the Mood|

sweater inspiration board

I may have spent my childhood growing up in Florida, but I always had an attraction to too all things knitwear.  I remember wishing the thermometer would dip below sixty so I could find good reason for wearing sweaters so carefully selected by my doting grandma (Mee Maw), who lived up north and must’ve thought that even her granddaughter in the Sunshine State might catch cold without the proper attire.  I recall one sweater specifically.  It was a kelly green number embellished with some type of gold coin like discs that I wore as a tunic over a pair of black and white houndstooth stirrup (yes, stirrup) leggings.  See, even as an adolescent I knew the difference between leggings and pants.

As an adult, I had the privilege of taking my sweater obsession even further when I worked in knitwear product development for Henri Bendel’s famously fabulous cashmere.  I now know more about weaves, wefts, and fibers than I’d like to admit.  So, while there is a small window where we, northerners, will enjoy all that is fall before we trade in our cardigans for sleeping bag coats, I can’t deny my delight in draping myself in cozy cashmere and lofty knits.

The List Volume LXXXIV

By |September 28th, 2012|The List|

taxi cabsI know you’d expect me to come in with guns blazing for this week’s edition of The List.  And while it would be fairly simple to stick to a straight up original ten point list (all things considered), let’s see if I can’t somehow spin all that negativity into something even the slightest bit positive.

fighting for a taxi

  1. The blame game.
  2. Thinking you’ve made the biggest designer shoe score EVER only to realize the box was mislabeled and you don’t actually wear a size 5.5.
  3. Finding makeup on a pillow (not to mention the sham!) that is so clearly not yours because you don’t wear the shade called, “Creamsicle” or “Oompa Loompa.”
  4. People using fancy words in hopes of sounding smarter, but instead confusing words as simple as “lair” and “layer.”  Oops.
  5. Having too many plans.
catching a cab
  1. Having too many plans.
  2. Knowing how to walk properly on a sidewalk.
  3. Getting all of your fall shoes and boots re-heeled fully knowing you’re about to rip them all right back off the moment you step foot on a subway grate.
  4. The look on the delivery man’s face when answering the door in a robe.
  5. Having friends, family, and loyal readers who love and support you through those tough times when you just feel like throwing in the towel.

You may have noticed I went ahead and left off “leaving wallet in taxi” and “site outages” because, well, we already know those suck.  So, have a great weekend
