Why Did You Wear That: Spot On

By |November 16th, 2013|Personal Style, Why Did You Wear That?|

kirsten smithI’ve always felt a little conflicted about wearing leather and fur. When I was ten, I begged and pleaded (to no avail) with my parents for a cute little spotted potbelly pig. One morning over breakfast, it was revealed to me that bacon, in fact, comes from pigs. For the next year, I refused to eat meat thinking about that poor little pig in the pet shop. (I also begged and pleaded for a chinchilla around that same time). After finding it far too difficult to gain sustenance without any meat in my diet, I gave up vegetarianism the next year, but the feelings of guilt about fur, stuck with me. While home visiting my mom in Wheeling between semesters in college, we ventured into an antique store in Centre Market. Amongst the delicate tea sets and tiny trinkets, there was a rack of vintage clothing and hanging in the midst of these dated duds, was the most amazing leopard coat. I am my mother’s daughter and she insisted that I would be thankful that I’d bought this coat one day. While it was first worn to a “pimp n’ hoe” party in college, I’ve held onto it throughout the years and am happy to bring it back into rotation this fall. When worn with a simple tee, vegan leather pants, pumps, and topped off with a knit beanie, the look is definitely not outdated and to me, it says more “hollaback girl” than call girl.

Beauty Buzz: Poolside Packing

By |May 23rd, 2013|Beauty Buzz, Why Did You Wear That?|

You’ve packed your weekender, polished your fingers and toes and gotten that dreaded Brazilian (you have, haven’t you?) Get thyself to a waxer, woman.  The next hurdle you’ll face over the holiday weekend is preparing the perfectly equipped beach bag.  There’s nothing worse than trotting all the way down to the beach, finding the perfect spot and then realizing you forgot your sunscreen.  That’s a valuable fifteen minutes of Vitamin D and boyscouting that you’ll be missing while fetching your forgotten goods.  Below I’ve created the First Aid Kit of beach bags so you can spend more time playing beach blanket bingo with that babe on the chaise next to you and less time retrieving your lip balm.

1. Mar Y Sol Caracas Basket Tote, 2. Yves Saint Laurent Oversized Round Sunglasses, 3. Henri Bendel Wet Bikini Bag, 4. Jonathan Adler Stepped Diamonds Earbuds, 5. Miracle Skin Transformer Lip Rewind Advanced Peptide Lip Treatment SPF 20, 6. Murad Waterproof Sunblock SPF 30, 7. Henri Bendel Under the Sun Towel with Strap, 8. Josie Maran Bohemian Waves Argan Hair Mist

Bingo!

Beauty Buzz: Stay Put

By |October 4th, 2012|Beauty Buzz|

kiss on a napkinLast week I went ahead and decided to take some of my own advice (for once) by taking fall’s big beauty trend, wine lips, for a test drive.  I spent a solid twenty minutes perusing my local Sephora (complete with live DJ) looking for the perfect shade of wine lipstick for my pout.  I went from Buxom to YSL to NARS… There’s gotta be a better way than testing on the back of my hand, right?  Anyway, fifteen shades later and I decided on one from Makeup Forever

wine lipstickOh, whoops.  Shall we just say that shade #13 (Purple) was not exactly the look I had been going for?  I know I joke that my new darker locks are a bit goth, but it’s a bit early for Halloween.  There was no way in the world I was going to head out on the town looking like Marilyn Manson.  So, I attempted to wipe off my less than beautiful mistake.   Ruh roh.  This lip lacquer wasn’t budging.  It took a couple of makeup wipes and a pinch of patience before I was able to get this goop gone.

24 hour lip color

Makeup Forever  Aqua Rouge, $24

Had this shade been one that worked for me, I would have been ecstatic.  Finally a product that does what it says.  I’m telling you, this lipstick would have made it through a six course dinner, serious makeout sesh, or an entire evening of karaoke.  So, let’s just call it a happy accident.  I may have gotten the wrong shade, but I certainly will be swapping it out for a more flattering lipcolor sure to last me through the evening… and maybe even til morning.

Setting the Mood: Just Another Day at the Beach

By |April 9th, 2012|Setting the Mood|

vintage beach photosI’m not quite sure where the phrase, “Life’s a beach.” came from, but I am quite certain if that were the case, people would be a whole lot happier.  Whether it be the white sandy beaches off the Gulf Coast of Florida or the majestic rocky points in Half Moon Bay, the beach is one of those things that’s just so beautiful no man could have made it.  Most people have fond memories from time spent by the sea.  I know I do.  (Well, except that incident with a dragonfly in Daytona).  We spent our summers there, took family vacations there, and some who are very lucky call it home.  With the weather warming up, it’s hard not to start daydreaming about spreading out your towel on the soft sand and soaking up a little bit of sun (with proper SPF, of course).

Setting the Mood: Who Do You Love?

By |February 14th, 2012|Gift Guide, Setting the Mood|

love mood boardHappy Valentine’s Day, beauties.  A consumer driven Hallmark holiday to some, just another reason to celebrate and indulge in all things love to others (like me).  Give me a “holiday” involving chocolate, loads of affection, pretty lingerie and possibly something shiny and I’m in.  How can one day encompass so many things that I adore?  Who cares if cupid is a crock of… ?  I’m celebrating.

In case you missed the G, PG-13, and R rated renditions, there’s still time to drop some hints or some dollars on something sweet and special.  Never forget that the best gifts are those that are thoughtful.  Whether you tuck a handwritten love note behind the pillow or make a favorite meal (in lingerie and heels, of course), it’s the little things that count… but a pair of Louboutins never hurt.
