Why Did You Wear That: Shoe In

By |October 2nd, 2014|Why Did You Wear That?|

best fall bootsOnce you’ve procured all of this fall’s must have fashion trends, you’re going to need the shoes to accessorize with.  One of my greatest struggles in life besides fitted sheets and the mental battle between being rail thin or indulging in gnocchi, is putting together the perfect outfit only to realize I do not have the perfect shoes to complete it.  This has led to lots of late arrivals, pissed off friends, and missed appointments.  Pretty sure this complaint would fall under the hashtag of “first world problems.”  In any case, this fall you are going to want to round out your wardrobe with boyish brogues, combat boots, boots that go beyond the knee, statement booties in addition to basic black, and a pair of sneakers that thank heaven almighty do not include the word “wedge.”  Below find my picks for fall’s best footwear.

Setting the Mood: Any Man of Mine

By |August 12th, 2014|Setting the Mood|

mens fall fashion editorialOn a “date” (and let’s use that term very loosely in this instance) that ended in a sex shop on Sixth Avenue last night, my suitor turned to me over bisteca per due at Morandi and asked, “What’s your type?”  My initial response would have been, “Not you,” but I figured that wouldn’t exactly be conducive to getting through the rest of our meal without utensil related injury.  My actual answer was that I don’t have a type and that’s not a farce.  When I look back on all of my relationships- long term and very short lived- I’m basically an equal opportunity dater.  From Wall Street bankers to musicians, athletes, writers, and tech nerds, I’ve basically run the gamut when it comes to careers and as far as appearances go they’ve been tall, short, dark, light, and everything in between.  Of course there has to be an initial attraction whether it be physical or mental, but the reason my heart melted for each one of them comes from an intangible place.  Even the worst of them (and that’s a tight race) had his wondrous moments and I hold a special place for each of them in my little black heart.  That’s why this week, we are dedicating WhyDid to the men in our lives and all that comes along with them. So, ladies, let’s hear it for the boys.

Why Did or Why Don’t: Giving ‘Em the Slip

By |March 17th, 2014|Why Did or Why Don't?, Why Did You Wear That?|

slip on sneakersNow that we’ve basically kicked that whole wedge sneaker trend, celebrities, who have always been big fans of comfortable footwear, are gravitating towards a shoe that seems to be a hybrid between the classic flat and a comfortable sneaker.  The slip on is essentially what it would look like if a ballet flat had one too many martinis and woke up next to a tennis shoe… nine months later.  A style of shoe made most popular by skateboarders sporting Vans all over Southern California in the 1970’s, the casual shoe has been reinvented by designer brands like Saint LaurentGivenchy and Prada.  While the feel is definitely a bit more downtown, I get the feeling even uptown girls will be heading to Barney’s to shop the look.

slip ons

1. Sam Edelman Becker Slip On, 2. Steve Madden Ecentric Pony Hair Flat, 3. Rachel Zoe Barney Slip On Sneakers, 4. United Nude Elastic Slip On Sneaker, 5. Dolce Vita Zoren Haircalf Slip On Sneakers, 6. Via Spiga Galant Sneaker, 7. Rivieras Lord Acid Woven Faux Leather Slip Ons, 8. Joie Kidmore Slip On Sneakers, 9. Vince Preston Slip On Sneaker, 10. Vans He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not Slip On Sneaker, 11. Rag & Bone Kent Suede Slip On Sneakers

So, while they are definitely an upgrade to the normal commuter sneaker, will you be buying into this trend?

Why Did You Wear That: Hut, Set, Whatever.

superbowl 2014

This Sunday the Denver Broncos and the Seattle Seahawks will face off at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.  (full disclosure: I just Googled that to make sure).  Besides being the best thing that’s happened to New Jersey since the Jersey Shore being canceled, this also means that we, ladies, have the opportunity to spend the afternoon in a room with a captive male audience.  Oh, you actually came to watch the game?  I’m actually here for the finger food and legitimate reason for pushing snooze on Monday morning.

My dad often texts me about football games and I attempt to give spirited responses because I know he cares… but sadly, I do not.  I’m not like a football hater and I might care a little more if a team relevant to me was playing (Steelers, Giants), but I kind of don’t care either way.  It’s the same way I feel about tofu.  Meh.  Without question, you will never see me in a bar wearing a football jersey.  Or face paint.  Though, Miley’s got me a little more interested in foam fingers as of late.  I’m probably  not friends with anyone wearing any of the aforementioned sports paraphernalia either, but I’m sure there are some exceptions.  Like an actual football player.  But alas, I do understand the need to show a little team spirt- I was cheerleading captain for heaven’s sake.  Clever little ladies can achieve a sporty chic look by wearing a pop of their team’s color in slouchy sweatshirts, colorful kicks, or mini t-shirts boasting the teams logo.  And denim is always a good look.

But, if you’re anything like me and you could care less about either team and are betting only on running out of salsa before chips, then you may want to just stick to the home (New York) team uniform.  All black everything.  Not only will you still look slim after housing a plate of nachos, you also won’t look like an a-hole wearing the losing team’s color postgame– which really makes you the winner, now doesn’t it?

Beauty Buzz: Love Me, Love Me Not

By |February 7th, 2013|Beauty Buzz|

curtis kulig love meBefore there was a Christian Louboutin next to the deli on my block (before a bag of chips cost $10), there used to be an art gallery with big glass windows.  Inside this gallery was a huge neon sign, a beacon of glowing red ligt in the night, that said, “Love Me.”  I wished so badly I had the wall space and cash to acquire this piece of art that’s basically my life’s motto.  Little did I know, this was from the same street artist who has made his mark all over New York, Los Angeles, and Tokyo with his signature, “Love Me”  campaign.  You may have seen it scribbled on everything from the side of a building to the side of a meat truck.  The man behind this beautiful mantra?  Curtis Kulig.  Not only is his message beautiful, he’s not too bad to look at, ladies.

curtis kuligBut alas, as all artists know, these bills won’t pay themselves.  His “Love Me” logo gained so much momentum that everyone from Vans to Urban Outfitters has tapped him to add a little love to their products.  And just in time for Valentine’s Day, he’s also teamed up with Smashbox, which may seem like an odd collaboration, but might be the most fitting as makeup application is actually a form of art.  These are the perfect little items to treat yourself or a friend to for Valentine’s Day and, of course, to spread a little love.
