Why Did You Wear That: Oh Lola!

By |February 7th, 2012|Personal Style, Why Did You Wear That?|

Lolita, light of my life, fire of my loins.  My sin, my soul.

“Lolita” is a term that is often thrown around without much thought.  It’s used in songs, slang, and even runway collections.  I hesitated on this post due to the sensitivity of the literal interpretation.  In case you haven’t read the book (didn’t I tell you to read the book?), it would be prudent to tread lightly seeing as the original usage would lean towards what some would consider pedophilia.  But let’s not go down that road…  Who needs to be that literal anyway?

Instead let’s go with the more watered down, more Hollywood, more commonly accepted and completely legal understanding of Lolita… the girlish flirt.  Le petite coquette.  That undeniable, unintentional, irresistible charm.  We all have a little Lolita in us, afterall.

lolita playgroundI’m many years past my prime as a nymphet, but I still embrace the feminine wile.  This modern day translation of little Lola is flirtatious and feminine, but far from a schoolgirl. It should evoke a feeling of simultaneous innocence and omnipotence.  If all else fails, throw on a pair of heart shaped sunglasses.

Look for Less: Leather and Legs

By |December 11th, 2011|Look for Less, Why Did You Wear That?|

A way to bring a little edge to any outfit is by adding a bit of leather.  If a leather jacket feels too predictable and leather pants just really aren’t going to happen, a leather skirt may be a great way to incorporate this trend.  Whether you winterize your look with a cozy sweater and opaque tights or sport a bare leg and sky high heels, be sure to mix in a more modest top.  You don’t want to look like a lady who belongs on a corner of Hollywood Boulevard.  Check out these three leather looks worn by some fresh faced celebrities:

1. Juicy Couture Candy Pink Cotton Lace Top, $110, 2. Andrew Marc Tristina Leather Skirt, $350, 3. Emitations Flora’s Sterling Silver Heart Charm Bracelet, $75, 4. Report Stamos Patent Pumps, $56.99

1.  By Malene Birger Luvina Lace Blouse, $224, 2. Naven Biker Skirt, $154, 3. Urban Outfitters Sheer Tights, $12, 4. White House Black Market Rosette Clutch, $34, 5. TopShop Galleria Patent Mary Janes, $92

Friday Frocks: Oh Baby, Baby!

By |August 12th, 2011|Friday Frocks, Why Did You Wear That?|

Since we’ve been on the topic… The last thing I feel like doing when I have a “friend in town” is squeezing myself into a dress tight enough to cut off all blood circulation and then shoving my poor undeserving toes into shoes that could serve as a form of ancient torture.  Whether you’re feeling the bloat like me or you just want to indulge in dessert at dinner, the babydoll dress is the answer to all of our problems.  Flowy and romantic, it is feminine enough not to be frumpy.  While you wont’ be able to see the outline of your organs, you’ll still look pretty.  Guys probably won’t be a fan of this one… but your tummy will.

1. Urban Outfitters Laine Dress, $19.99, 2. Jen’s Pirate Booty Pandora Babydoll Dress, $145, 3. Betsey Johnson Rose Chiffon Short Babydoll Dress, $298, 4. Plastic Island Rose Babydoll Dress, $158, 5. Black Poppy Flirty Bustier Dress, $29.50, 6. Style Stalker Scale Print Cut Out Babydoll Dress, $77.58, 7. Rampage Sleeveless Striped Babydoll Dress, $20.99, 8. Twenty8Twelve Dorris Babydoll Dress, $156.99, 9. Patterson J. Kincaid Olivia Pintuck Dress, $109.99, 10. Alice + Olivia Cammie Trapeze Dress, $257

Why Not Play Head Games?

By |August 4th, 2011|Beauty Buzz|

The summer is nearing its end, but it’s not going out without a fight.  The heat can be unbearable when trying to figure out what to wear- or what to do with your hair.  Speaking from experience, I know what type of havoc humidity and heat can wreak on one’s dome piece.  When all else fails, disguise that crazy fro with some cleverly placed hair accessories.  It will distract folks from whatever madness is going on from the neck up.

Might I suggest slopping some heavy conditioner on your fried tresses and tying them back in a sleek bun?  (I’d be lying if I said I hadn’t done this on more than one occasion).

1. Forever 21 Braided Rosette Headband, $4.80, 2. Belle Noel Honey Hexagon Hair Comb, $35, 3. Henri Bendel Debutante Studded Hair Tie, $58, 4. Urban Outfitters Studded Leather Bun Holder, $14, 5. Forever 21 Braided Peacock Feather Headwrap, $6.80, 6. Jennifer Behr Swarovski Encrusted Skinny Headband, $225

While we are all getting hyped up on hair candy, let’s not lose our heads.  You know my thoughts on feather extensions (NO) and I feel the same way about these crazy forehead straps parading as headbands.  Another rule of thumb- If Aubrey O’Day is doing it, you probably shouldn’t be.

Now go on and have a good hair day.

Why Did You Wear That: Laced Up

Lace doesn’t always need to be associated with lingerie or your grandmother’s curtains. Lace is a super sexy element that can be brought into your wardrobe to give a little bit of girly sexy appeal. This particular trend looks great with leather to give that “sugar and spice” feel. Don’t deck yourself out head to toe. Instead, try mixing in a piece at a time.
