Why Did You Wear That: Jumping at the Chance

By |June 20th, 2012|Celebrity Style, Why Did You Wear That?|

celebrity jumpsuits 2012Another one of my favorite “all in one” outfits is the jumpsuit; a very close cousin of the romper.  While you may equate the jumpsuit to the disco queens of the 70’s or the Angela Bowers of the 80’s, the jumpsuit is actually being made quite current by the A-list of the red carpet.  The jumpsuit started its reemergence last year, and I “jumped” right on that trend (couldn’t help it).  This look can be both casual (see my favorite American Apparel version here) and incredibly glamorous (remember when Rose Byrne first wore one to the SAG Awards?).  So, whether you choose to wear yours with flats for Sunday brunch or heels for Saturday night fever, this trend is sure to leave you looking anything but out of style.

Friday Frocks: Cut It Out

By |June 1st, 2012|Friday Frocks|

pink scissorsSpeaking of cutting things up.  Another trend for summer that will most likely carry into fall is that of the cut out dress.  Instead of the daring deep V or the slit all the way up to… designers have opted for the unexpected flash of flesh.  This look is very specific, so let’s not get carried away with too much ventilation- though the impending heatwave may make it tempting.  The look is a peek of skin, not “I was accosted by the cousin of Edward Scissorhands on the way to The Darby.”  So embrace the trend, but not too tightly.

Girl Crush: Free to Be Dree

By |February 8th, 2012|Celebrity Style, Why Did You Wear That?|

Speaking of luscious literary ladies, this beyond gorgeous gal has deeply rooted family history in American Literature.  Granddaughter of Ernest Hemingway, Dree Hemingway has made a name for herself and it may have to more to do with her looks than books.  I have a mild to moderate interest in Ernest Hemingway, so when one of my best friends indulged me in visiting the Hemingway Home in Key West back in November, we were intrigued to see family photos including those of Margaux and Mariel Hemingway, Dree’s mom.  Upon further Wikipediaing (is that a verb yet?), we discovered Dree and her sister, the equally lovely, Langley Fox.  It’s hard to believe so many beautiful and interesting people share the same DNA.

But back to my girl crush du jour, Dree.  She’s chic.  She’s understated.  She’s the girl we all wish we were.  The epitome of “Oh, this ol’ thing?  I thought I knew a thing or two about layering, but Dree could even school the Olsens!  It seems I’m not alone in my admiration of this lanky blonde’s style.  You may recognize her from Madewell’s holiday (choose your own adventure) campaign and Sandro tapped her to design a capsule collection for the brand.  With her classica all-American looks and fun free spirit, I get the feeling this is just the begininning for Dree… and there’s plenty more to see.

Friday Frocks: Blue Jean Baby

By |August 5th, 2011|Friday Frocks, Why Did You Wear That?|

There’s nothing more American than denim… and apple pie… and apparently Sienna Miller taming a tiger.  Perhaps you’re not the type of girl who likes to slip into skin tight jeans, but  you’d still like to try to show some patriotism by wearing this heavy duty fabric.  Today’s your lucky day!  By God, every day is your lucky day because you live in America!  Denim isn’t reserved strictly for your stems these days.  Just take a look at how these stylish celebs (and America’s favorite Brit) have been wearing their blue jeans.

Who knew denim could make for such fabulous frocks?  By wearing you blues in dress form, you are giving a casually playful look that is perfect for summer barbecues, running errands, and lunching with girlfriends.  Depending on shoes and and accessories, this look can be dressed up or dressed down.  Just like jeans, denim frocks are very versatile.

Friday Frocks: Swan Song

By |December 3rd, 2010|Friday Frocks|

This may be one of my favorite Friday Frocks to date. I have a personal obsession with all things ballet related seeing as I was two pom-poms away from trading in college career for a blistered toed career of ballet (there’s a reason I love Center Stage). Needless to say, I can’t wait to see this movie (I’m aware it’s no Nutcracker).  So if you are looking to channel your inner inner prima ballerina, try on these frilly frocks. I don’t recommend losing the 20+ pounds that Mila and Natalie lost for the film, but slipping into something dainty will certainly have you feeling like doing pirouettes in your Loubous.

J. Mendel Embellished Georgette Gown, $1,918
