The red carpet was red hot this year at the 87th Annual Academy Awards.  While it poured down rain in Los Angeles, causing a hot box effect with plastic tenting literally wilting A-list hairstyles and melting perfectly made up faces, nominees and future winners did not let us down in the dress department.  While there was nothing truly offensive, there were also very few that inspired any standing ovations, which would be saved for John Legend, Common, Patricia Arquette, and Graham Moore.  Saint Laurent on both Dakota Johnson and Margot Robbie were two of my early favorites.  When Rosamund Pike arrived in a perfectly fitted Givenchy frock only two months after giving birth, I shed a tear and poured out a little bit of alcohol, which my dog quickly lapped up.  A few debatable dresses were worn by Lupita Nyong’o, Nicole Kidman, and Felicity Jones.  I’m not sure why, but Khloe Kardashian was recruited by E! for her opinions on red carpet arrivals, to which she held nothing back.  I zoned out from the actual awards show after Neil Patrick Harris’s first failed joke, but I did catch Julianne Moore’s well deserved acceptance speech, Common’s freckles, Lady Gaga’s epic cover of The Sound of Music, and the absence of Joan Rivers in the Memoriam.

Why Did You Wear That: Golden Girls

By |January 14th, 2013|Celebrity Style, Red Carpet Recap, Why Did You Wear That?|

golden globes red carpetI stayed up putting this together until 4am last night… which led me to sleep in this morning, throwing off my entire schedule… and that’s why you’ve had to wait so long to hear what I’m sure you’ve been fidgeting in your seat hoping all day long to hear: my opinion.

And so below you’ll find my picks for the best, the worst, and the biggest trends that were seen on the red carpet from last night’s Golden Globes.  It’s funny how different some of these dresses look in photographs as opposed to watching them live on TV.  The colors look different, there’s no movement, and a little bit of the magic is sucked out of them.  While gathering these snaps, I started to question my original picks, but then decided to go with the dresses that made me grin from the get go.

Last night’s show was all about the women of Hollywood and they certainly dressed the part.  This is the first time in a long time where I actually had a hard time whittling down my choices and debating on how much to include in my recap.  But enough about me, let’s get down to business.

The Best:

The Worst:

And with every award show, there tends to be a trend or two that rules the red carpet.  This year, without a doubt, it was the presence of black.  At one point, I was left scratching my head wondering if this show was being held in Los Angeles or New York.  Contrary to the belief that black is boring, the ladies found ways to wear this staple that were the least bit dull.

Sprinkled in with basic black were pops of tangerine, bits of blush, and lots of sparkle.  Here are some trends that stood out and can probably expect to see more of during upcoming award shows.

Would You Wednesday: I See Through You

By |May 9th, 2012|Why Did or Why Don't?|

met gala see through gownsThis past Monday, the Super Bowl of fashion, the Met Gala happened in New York City.  As any good fashionista knows, you better arrive dressed to impress or risk being on every news media outlet’s worst dressed list.  And deck themselves out is precisely what this year’s A-list did.  While there are always a few stand out trends (like Wintour in white and a smattering of sunshine-y yellow), the one trend that seemed to catch everyone’s eye… and breath… was the see through gowns showing off some skin and some seriously gorgeous gams.

To some, this excess of skin may be offensive, but I personally have no problem with it… so long as it’s done with taste rather than haste.  I grew up in a kind of “naked house” (it was mostly me and mom… so there was no need for modesty).  I’d wear a tissue if I could get away with it and as a matter of fact, I have a dress that I reference as the “tissue dress.”  I get it though, one can take a little bit of chic cheekiness and turn it into just a lot of cheek.  And while I’m not put off by the female body, some people just don’t appreciate some good side boob and are abhorred by the mere trace of a nipple.

So would you don one of these daring dresses?
