Why Did or Why Don’t: Choke Hold

Along with Birkenstocks, Tevas, and scrunchies, another 90’s accessory making its way back to the buffet for seconds is the choker. Unlike failures in footwear, this was actually one trend I participated in the first go round. However, the ones I was wearing looked a little different than the iterations most recently seen on celebrities, runways, and department stores. No, no, mine weren’t the now sophisticated types made from shiny metals with beautiful embellishments. Mine were a bit more basic, probably crafted out of hemp with the crown jewel being a- wait for it… Fimo bead.

But these neckwringers, aren’t really to be credited specifically to the 90’s. It just so happens that was the first time I (and most of you) were alive to wear them. As a matter of fact, chokers were big all the way back in 1940 and in the 1860’s, prostitutes actually wore black ribbons around their necks to let the gents know they were open for business. Now, wearing a choker will probably only insinuate that you’re under the age of forty and know all the lyrics to Ace of Bass’s “I Saw the Sign.”

Why Did You Wear That: She’s Got Legs.

Oh, hey. It’s snowing again. Blame that damn groundhog… or global warming. Whomever is to blame, it’s bone chillingly cold and frustratingly difficult to get dressed each day keeping both style and thermometer in mind. One tires of wearing only jeans and pants and our poor little frocks have been left hanging lonely in the outer realms of our closets.

A great way to add interest to a basic little black dress is with fashion legwear. Not to mention, a wonderful way to show off those stems you’ve been keeping in shape all winter long. Another option? Consider layering plain black tights under some of the open work options to achieve the same look without losing the warmth. And speaking of layering, don’t be afraid to layer over the knee options on top of tights. Play with texture and patterns to keep things interesting until the snow melts and the sun comes out again.

Setting the Mood: Crashing Coachella

Every year, music fans flock to the desert to listen to their favorite bands and just cut loose. This music filled phenomenon is called Coachella. Now, for me, being subjected to large smelly, sweaty, intoxicated crowds is my worst nightmare realized. I have a hard enough time navigating public transit. However, there are some of you who live for these types of Woodstock wet dreams, so you’re going to need to dress the part. Basically, this is your chance to live out your hippie boho dreams.

A few tips:

The dirtier/more careless you look, the better. AKA: no shower, no problem.
Never use Paris Hilton as a style reference even though she continuously attends.
Pants are apparently optional.
Just please put on some shoes.

To be clear, not much has changed from last year.

Setting the Mood: Breaking Spring

Recently, people just kept throwing out the term, “spring break” and not in reference to the questionable Disney Channel graduates’ movie. While, spring break doesn’t mean much to me anymore, I did partake in several years of beachside debauchery without ever returning home with a tramp stamp or body piercing. I don’t know about you, but I call that success. Despite your stance on spring break, one must realize it is kind of a rite of passage wherein young people discover spring flings, alcohol by the yard, and the importance of chlorine in public swimming pools. So whether spring break is just a distant memory or something you still have yet to indulge in, get yourself in the mood with bright bikinis, shiny sunglasses, and shady headwear.
