Why Did You Wear That: Opposite Day

By |May 31st, 2011|Personal Style, Why Did You Wear That?|

A few weeks ago, we took my fiance’s mom to the Ritz Carlton in Half Moon Bay for dinner.  To be honest, it kind of comes out of nowhere.  Like all hidden gems, if you didn’t know what you were looking for, you’d never know it existed.  The contrast of the crashing waves and the the rocky hillsides are truly breathtaking.  What the beaches of northern California lack in heat, they more than make up for with beautiful topography.

Remember opposite day?  There are days when I wish we still practiced that silly playground game.  There’s something so great and unexpected about the mish mash of opposites.  Since no one cares to play along with me, I like to play solo games of opposite day with my wardrobe.  I often mix things that don’t traditionally go together.  For example, I never like to wear something that’s overtly sexy, like a bodycon dress and five inch heels.  Instead, I throw in a curve ball; maybe top my slinky dress with a grandpa cardigan or swap out my heels for biker boots- many times I even put on my glasses.

When I put on these cargo pants, I wanted to soften them up a bit since they can skew a bit masculine.  By topping them with a sheer lace top and slipping into strappy heels, my man pants went from warfare to my fair lady.  Next time you wear something really girly like a chiffon dress, try pairing it with a leather motorcycle jacket.  You’ll be your very own walking opposite day.

Why Did You Wear That: The Real King of the Jungle

By |March 21st, 2011|Why Did You Wear That?|

Tigers, leopards, cheetahs.  They get all the credit.  Season after season, animal print, namely leopard, remains en vogue.  Well, what about the quiet king of the jungle?  The giraffe?  With pleasantly patterned pelts, and lashes you could only wish for, the lanky giraffe has been long overlooked.  It is the supermodel of the safari, afterall.

It’s true, I’m biased.  My very favorite animals (other than Smitty) are giraffes.  My fiance thought I was mocking him when we first started hanging out (guess he didn’t read  number two) until my parents verified that I, too, was mad for giraffes.  Match made in heaven.

So if you’re tired of tigers, and cheetahs, and leopards- oh my!  Why not try on a different pattern from our long legged friends?:

1. Markus Lupfer Giraffe Sequin Jumper, $450, 2. Cappelli Printed Toyo Handbag, $25.60,  3. Kashmere Black Ombre Giraffe Printed Cashmere Scarf, $125.99, 4. Brian Lichtenberg Sleeveless One Shoulder Dress, $398, 5. Giambattista Valli Giraffe Linen Wedge, $650, 6. Giambattista Valli Linen and Silk Georgette Animal Print Dress, $2,590, 7. dELiAs Lace Giraffe Burnout Tee, $19.50, 8. Kenneth Jay Lane White and Brown Enamel Giraffe Bracelet, $75, 9. Just Cavalli Printed Jersey Wrap Dress, $450, 10. The Balm Shady Lady Vol. 3, $39.50, 11. Tepper Jackson Giraffe Messenger Bag, $48, 12. Amika Tourmaline Curler, $105

Five fun facts about giraffes:

  1. Giraffes have 18 inch purply-black tongues.
  2. Despite their long necks, giraffes have seven vertebrae just like humans… they just happen to be up to ten inches long.
  3. Giraffes can eat up to 75 pounds of food a day.
  4. Giraffe calfs are dropped from their mom’s womb head first to the ground.  The fall doesn’t hurt the calf, but instead, causes it to take its first deep breath (a lal the doctor slapping a baby’s back).
  5. Not so fast?  Giraffes can run up to 34 mph and when they run, their back legs cross their front (their front legs are 10% longer than their hind legs).

Now who’s king?

Why Did You Wear That: A Touch of Turquoise

By |February 1st, 2011|Celebrity Style, Why Did You Wear That?|

Seems that the stars of Hollywood have a new best friend.  Recent red carpets reveal that the gals are trading in their diamonds for a much more colorful stone in their accessories.  The first notable turquoise appearance was on Blake Lively when she wore it to the National Board of Review of Motion Pictures Awards Gala back in January.  The pop of unexpected color works especially well with jewel tones, crisp whites, and warm citrus hues.  So next time your ensemble seems a bit lackluster, why not add some color with a touch of turquoise.

Why Did You Eat That: Meet the Parents

By |December 27th, 2010|New York, Why Did You Eat That?|

During the holiday season, there is a lot of meet and greet with family members.  For some this may be the first meeting. For others it is round two, three, or four with the in laws. In either case, it can be quite overwhelming.

Last week, my fiance met my mother for the first time. While the pressure wasn’t really on me, I did want to have an enjoyable experience. For a night out on the town, I chose to take my mom and fiance to Morandi.  It’s a great place for your parents to get the “New York experience” without overwhelming them with bottle popping and rail thin model types. Not to mention, the food is pretty delicious.

The staff is very knowledgable about wine and helped us choose a bottle everyone would enjoy. We ordered the olive ascalone (fried green olives stuffed with sausage) and the carciofi alla giude (fried artichokes with lemon). My fiance ordered the guinea hen, I had the gnocchi special, and my mom noshed on pappardelle integrali con pancetta (whole wheat pasta with pancetta, broccoli rabe, and radicchi). Everything was delightful and we were happily stuffed. Seeing as everyone was getting along swimmingly and my mom was a few glasses of wine in, we headed over to Soho House to really get the party started.

So what should a young lady wear when going to meet her future in laws?  There is no need for a turtleneck and pearls. No one believes you are that innocent, but covering up a bit and coming across more wholesome than your normal Saturday night tube top won’t hurt. Try a warm and cozy sweater and patterned pants. Looking pulled together and sophisticated will put your future mother in law at ease.  No one will ever be good enough for her baby boy, but at least you’ll come close.

J. Crew Cashmere Cowlneck Sweater, $228

Fred Flare Black and Grey Sid Pants, $49.99

Ann Taylor Covered Platform Bootie, $228

Botkier Metallic Night Out Cross Body Bag, $195

Kenneth Jay Lane Black Diamond Chandelier Earrings, $100

Welcome to the family!
