Beauty Buzz: Find the Light

By |December 18th, 2013|Beauty Buzz|

metallic eye makeupDuring the holidays and especially with New Year’s Eve quickly creeping ’round the corner, some of us look for ways to amp up our standard makeup routines for swanky evenings out on the town and special seasonal celebrations.  Some may opt for the classic statement making bold lip (good choice) and others go for the more “Golden Girl” approach (also a great choice).  But beauty beware: there is a big difference between glowing like the lights of Paris (the city, not the socialite) and glaring like the neon signs of Las Vegas.  Let’s keep glitter where it belongs: on art projects, Halloween costumes and strippers.  Strippers can wear glitter.

Come to think of it, a guy I was dating once showed up late one night after work, which should have been reason enough to dump him, but he was covered in glitter.  Seeing as he doesn’t work at a Michael’s craft store, he must have procured his shimmering accents somewhere.  Hanging out with another lady is bad enough but, hanging out with another lady who dons glitter is grounds for permanent exile.  But I digress…

To achieve a glowing holiday look, invest in a few beauty products with flecks not flakes of shimmer in them.  You could go for a dramatic foil for your lids, a metallic manicure or something as simple as adding some extra shine to your tresses.  Be sure not to go overboard with your gilded look though.  A gorgeous glow is one thing, but looking like a greased up walrus won’t get your dance card filled up any faster… if at all.

Setting the Mood: Shine and Shout

By |December 31st, 2012|Setting the Mood|

sparkle glitter beauty

Maybe you aren’t the “sequin dress” kinda gal (really?) or maybe you just haven’t had the time or funds to go out and fetch yourself a sparkly ensemble.  That’s no reason for you to be anything less than bright this evening.  Whether you’re a little sparkle shy or simply looking for a last minute fix, there are several ways to shine.  Grab a jewel encrusted clutch, put on your party shoes, or just add some sparkle to your peepers to spruce up any look.  You aren’t a wallflower so you certainly shouldn’t look like one.

The List Volume LXXIX

By |July 6th, 2012|The List|

my friend told me i was delusionalAlright, so, I do think these e-cards have gotten a bit (by “a bit” I mean “completely”) excessive, but when I saw this one the other day, I couldn’t help but laugh… and then realize it could have been tailor made for me.  If only I had a unicorn…

sad unicorn

  1. Leaving my ID in the copier at FedEx.  Score for the 19 year old 5’7 blonde who found it.  Enjoy the Amaretto sours.
  2. The insane heatwave that’s happening here in New York.  Every day I wake up thinking there is NO WAY it could be hotter.  Spoiler alert: it is.
  3. Hair in the drain.  I mean, I know it’s mine, but…
  4. The last few times I have gone to Starbucks I merely ordered iced coffee.  They forgot it.  They did not, however, forget the gentleman behind me’s iced skim double shot hold the water two pumps of vanilla I’ve stopped listening ’cause you’re too high maintenance frappuccino.
  5. Delusional people.

whydid unicorn

  1. Having the most ridiculous dreams for yourself and actually saying them out loud (try it).
  2. Black diamond studs.
  3. The Sultra Bombshell.  My girlfriends have been raving and now I see why.
  4. Fun fact: sometimes I walk around the city with no actual destination and listen to my iPod pretending it’s my personal movie soundtrack.
  5. Delusional people.

May your weekend be full of glitter, unicorns, and giggles.  Now, if you don’t mind, my unicorn is thirsty.  It’s hot out here.

Why Did You Wear That: Taylor Made

By |January 22nd, 2010|Why Did You Wear That?|

nothing to wear

Last night a designer saved my life… (okay, two nights ago), but you get my reference to the Mariah Carey song in the oh-so magical “Glitter” right?

Anyway, as you should be well aware, Wednesday was the anniversary of my birth. In true WhyDid form, I decided I hated what I was planning on wearing that evening approximately two hours before we were supposed to be at Allen and Delancey for dinner.   My bff turned ghost white, we’re talking Casper here, when I informed her that I just couldn’t go and we should just cancel.  After digging through my archives and coming up empty handed, a lightbulb went off in this pretty little head of mine.

Kimberly Taylor!!! We threw on our boots (sans socks) and hauled over to her Meatpacking store.  Within 15 minutes, I emerged from the store victoriously with neon green shopping bag in hand.  I’d scored myself an amazing and somehow sexy black silk romper.  Bff breathed a sigh of relief and commented how impressed she was with the ability to not only come up with a new outfit so quickly, but a great outfit at that.  I threw that sucker on with black seamed stockings and sky high heels and off we went to enjoy the night.

How did I know about this little gem?  Well, actually, it was during another crisis.  When I had tried to “Rent the Runway” for my upcoming birthday party, I was unable to reserve anything in my size. Apparently, I’m not the only one planning on partying this evening.  I had walked by Kimberly Taylor several times while going to and from various locations.  I finally went in and found an amazing dress that didn’t completely drain my bank account.

Who is this so called Kimberly Taylor, you ask? Well, she’s a young (by young I mean 24) designer who has a knack for color and simple sexy silhouettes.  There aren’t many stores where you could walk in and out fifteen minutes later feeling fully satisfied. Whether you’re looking for a sexy date top or a flirty frock, you can find it here.
