As mad for plaid as I am? So are Hedi Slimane of Saint Laurent, Rossella Jardini of Moschino, and Mr. Lagerfeld himself. But if you tossed that old school uniform or it doesn’t quite fit the way it did as a teen, do not fret. Perhaps it’s time to be the teacher rather than the pupil and there are some very grown up ways to add plaid that are more collegiate than kindergarten. Let me school you for a moment. Pop a varsity jacket on with distressed denim and pumps, add a plaid jumper over a turtleneck, or polish off those penny loafers- but never forget your over the knee socks. (Pro-tip: for cooler climates, layer over the knee socks atop sheer stockings in the same shade or patterned color family). Pick a piece or two to achieve the look, but don’t go for extra credit by overdoing it. You should look subtly nostalgic, not like you just stepped out of a time machine.

The 90’s: a decade I can get behind. Rather than leaving us with treasures like bad perms. legwarmers, and the hair bands of the 80’s, this decade was the cooler, more rebellious little sister. I always wondered why anyone wanted to purposely look like an asshole by throwing an 80’s theme party. Some things are meant to be left in the past. Like your ex’s and that one school photo when you had braces and DIY bangs.

The 90’s left the legacies of grunge, garage bands and fashion trends worth repeating. Combat boots, babydoll dresses, and anything plaid are 90’s style essentials (not to mention some of this fall’s must haves). Unkempt hair, porcelain skin, and a deep wine pout are the beauty staples to complete your trip back in time. Bonus points for being able to borrow your boo’s blouse. Your flannel, is my flannel, honey. Hello, androgyny. Recall CkOne? Who didn’t love My So Called Life and who can forget the queen of grunge, Ms. Courtney Love? Starting to see why sometimes history is worth repeating?

We’re busy women. We somehow balance careers, friendships, love lives, and sometimes even children. You have invested a small fortune in your skin and there’s no need to cancel that all out by roasting in the sun like a California raisin. Sure, sunblock and sunglasses help protect against a gnarly sunburn, but why not come with the wrinkle fighting trifecta by adding a huge hat? I don’t mean like J. Lo or Kim Kardashian, heavens no. There are ways to pull off a humongous hat without looking like a pretentious poser and this is one of those times that it’s completely fine to throw a little shade. Now, don’t be mistaken. A hat doesn’t make SPF obsolete, but does help deflect those harmful UVA/UVB rays decreasing your chance for skin cancer and premature aging. Memorial Day is fast approaching… so fast, in fact, that I didn’t even realize it was this weekend. Guess who doesn’t have plans (yet)? Who wants to pack me in his/her carry-on? Anyone?
