Setting the Mood: In the Mood for Love… or Something

By |February 11th, 2015|Beauty & Trends, Setting the Mood|

valentines day fashion inspiration

This Saturday, I plan on changing up my standard behaviors of drinking wine in bed watching Sex and the City re-runs, by doing the same thing with one of my best friends in our underwear.  That’s right, it’s Valentine’s Day (or as it’s been renamed, Singles’ Awareness Day).  Truth be told, I love red roses– so long as there isn’t one single sprig of baby’s breath within a five mile radius.  I also love lingerie from this website, chocolate, gifts, and well, love, and that’s why many couples enjoy to spend time together and also use toys as a butt vibrator to enjoy their love.  I don’t actually have a problem with the holiday other than the fact that it’s a commercially manufactured one and it’s still not legal to marry your pet as there are not really any other suitable males in my life to spend February 14th with.

It seems a little counterintuitive to combine wearing skimpy lingerie while overindulging in chocolate, but then again, I enjoy all my meals in bed, so I’m in.  If you don’t have a significant other, or even if you do, I think Valentine’s Day is a great a day as any to show yourself a little bit of love. Why Did You Wear That: American Girl

By |January 25th, 2015|Personal Style, Why Did You Wear That?|

leopard coat and jeansWhen I was little, American Girls were introduced.  As luck would have it, one of these dolls was named Kirsten.  There was no way on Earth my mother thought I should go one single day without having a Kirsten doll of my own.  Eventually, she got a best friend named Samantha.  Having spent the past week in Paris (much more on that later), I’ve learned quite a bit about what French men (and women) think about American girls.  While I didn’t stand out like a sore thumb with a money belt and massive camera, once I spoke English, the French were very intrigued to ask us about our President and who we thought would be the next.  (Their guess is Hillary Clinton).  The style here is much like New York, except they aren’t afraid of a full length fur and even those dressed down have a bit more polish and panache than their American counter parts.  While I blended in nicely, I do suppose wearing the outfit in this post would have been a dead giveaway of American descent.

WhyDid Wisdom: Ask Me No Questions… Ok, Do.

By |September 9th, 2014|WhyDid Wisdom|

soho houseI’m typically the one doing all the interviews (Real People, Real Style) and I have a crop of fresh faces coming right up, so it was a pleasant and welcome change to have the tables turned.  Recently, both StyleList and Bott & Co delved deep into my sometimes scattered thoughts to ask me all about blogging, my ambitions, and my humble beginnings.  It’s interesting to actually have to think about where you are headed and remember how it all began.  Sometimes it’s incredibly scary to say (or write) out loud what it is that you really want out of life and to be open about yourself (a couple of years ago, I did an interview with Huffington Post wherein I discussed my distaste for leggings (read it here) that didn’t go over well with everyone), but I had a lot of fun doing it and if you haven’t already, please go check out both of my interviews.

Setting the Mood: Make It Rain

By |March 31st, 2014|Setting the Mood|

rain fashion editorialWithout a doubt New Yorkers are some of the most intelligent and interesting people on the entire planet and yet all we can seem to talk about is the weather.  Like yesterday for instance, what the hell was that?  Thunder and flurries?  Perhaps we harp on it because it is one thing all of us share no matter our occupations or backgrounds or it could be the fact that all weather, whether heatwaves, snowstorms, or torrential downpours seem to be more extreme when experienced in the city.  In any case, today is the last day before April and though the icy temperatures have started to break (kind of) we always seem to forget that we are now set for another month of miserable grey skies and sloppy street puddles before real spring sets in.  So, brace yourselves and get weather ready with some storm essentials.  This is not a test.

Setting the Mood: Love Me Tender or Not So Much.

By |February 10th, 2014|Setting the Mood|

valentines dayThe only day in February with more unnecessary hype surrounding it than the first day of Fashion Week is Valentine’s Day.  While I’m love’s greatest champion even after all my crashing, burning, and broken hearts, Valentine’s Day gives me a little bit of anxiety.  Not really for myself so much as the rest of the general population.  My blackened heart basically makes me immune to the inevitable disappointment of people everywhere who dreamt up a day so romantic it would make Cinderella sick.  Without fail, plans fall apart, hearts get shattered, and mascara finds its way down tear stained cheeks.

Don’t believe me?  Check out a few of my Valentine’s Day massacres:

One year it was spent eating an entire box of red velvet cupcakes and crying with my gay best friend.  Did I mention the cupcakes had been meant for his date who canceled an hour before?

I once went through a breakup while seated next to my boyfriend turned ex boyfriend on an airplane on the way home from Los Angeles.  That was an awfully long flight.

And last year I really exceeded all of my bad decision making capabilities with a late night margarita fueled rendezvous.  That lead to an entire year of what some might consider an all around bad decision.  I’d actually like to thank the fine folks previously employed at Mole for having served us more tequila shots than there are days in February.

But it’s not all bad.  People have gotten engaged, met at single’s mixers, and lived out The Bachelor worthy dates.  So, let’s go with that.  While I’ll probably padlock myself indoors and surrender my iPhone to my doorman for the evening so as to avoid my apparent February 14th curse, you kids go out and have fun.
